THE OBITUARY OFWm. McLaughlin |
Yesterday it was made known to Judge James that the family of the late Wm. McLaughlin, who was accidently killed on the railroad during the early part of the winter, was in very straightened circumstances - in fact, were suffering for the necessaries of life. When the information was imparted, the judge gave his felt hat an extra kink, pulled out his checkbook and wrote a check for $5 in favor of the sufferers, and handing it to the solicitor for aid; remarked that "the poor should never be permitted to suffer while he was able to help them." And yet there are selfish mortals who claim that the judge displayed methodical generosity because he is a candidate for mayor.
