Chris Nicolai

Chris Nicolai, died at the home of his grandson Glenn Nicolai at Shelby, Iowa, following a long illness. Mr. Nicolai was an old resident of Pottawattamie County coming here from Streator, Illinois, in the fall of 1873.

Mr. Nicolai was born in Windeberg, Germany, February 9, 1851, and came to America when 16 years of age, settling at Streator, Illinois.

On October 18, 1871 he was united in marriage to Mary Fixsel at Streator. This union was blessed with seven children, one dying in infancy and a son, Albert, at the age of 22 years.

Mr. Nicholai is survived by three sons: Chris of Omaha, William of Shelby, H.P. Nicolai of Hancock and two daughters, Mrs. August Kock of Council Bluffs, and Mrs. L.H. Brandes of Avoca, fourteen grandchildren, one brother, Henry Nicolai, Sr., of Hancock.

Funeral services were held at the Silver Creek Church. Rev. Paul Davis of the Silver Creek Church and Rev. John Rapp of Oakland were in charge of the services. Interment was made in Silver Valley Cemetery. Six grandsons acted as pall bearers (Feb. 9, 1851-Dec. 29, 1929)
