Only one draft occurred here during the Civil War. This was made on the 5th of November, 1864, sixty men, who were drawn from Kane Township. Substitutes were furnished in a few instances, and on the 17th of the same month the men, thus drawn, were sent to the general rendezvous at Davenport, and from that camp assigned to various commands in the field. The draft was conducted here by H. H. Field, who was a Deputy Provost Marshal in the Fifth District of Iowa. Hon. Caleb Baldwin, as an assistant to Gov. Kirkwood, and Col. H. Stone, rendered important service inplacing all these troops in a condition for active duty. |
