THE OBITUARY OFJoel Harvey Pace |
Joel Harvey Pace, 80, died late Friday night at his home after an illness of two months. He was a retired merchant, having conducted a meat market for many years. Mr. Pace was a pioneer of this city, having lived here for 73 years. He was born in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, September 12, 1846. His father, Dr. Joel J. Pace, died when the son was 3 months old. At the age of three years the boy moved, with his mother, two brothers and three sisters to St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1853 his mother died and in1854 he came to Council Bluffs expecting to make his home with his sister, Mrs. J. B. Lewis, but was unable to stand the severe winters of this section and returned to St. Joseph in the fall of 1855.
Again in 1863 he came to Council Bluffs and remained since that time. He took a deep interest in municipal and civic affairs. He engaged in the retail meat business continuously from March 1878 until July 1924. He was a member of the Retail Grocers' and Butchers' Association and served two terms as alderman, 1891-1892 and 1896-1897.
Mr. Pace was a member of Hawkeye Lodge No. 184 of the Odd Fellows and Twin Brothers Encampment, but demitted from both a number of years ago.
He married Miss Emma Drake on October 8, 1874. She died February 3, 1877, leaving him with two small daughters, who now are Mrs. Frank E. Bliss and Mrs. Palmer Johannsen. On October 12, 1887, he married Miss Carrie E. Huntington. Two daughters were born to this union, Carolyn, who died April 11, 1900, and Elizabeth who now is Mrs. F.R. Burnham.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Pace joined a wagon train here in 1864 and made the trip to Denver with supplies. The next year he made two trips to Denver traveling as cook with the famous Jones Trains.
Mr. Pace is survived by his widow, Mrs. Caroline E. Pace; three daughters, Mrs. F.E. Bliss of Omaha, Mrs. P. E. Johannsen of Standard, Alberta, Canada, and Mrs. F. R. Burnham of this city, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the residence, Rev. Paul Calhoun of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
