Scott Sankey

Scott Sankey, 80, veteran auctioneer, died Thursday at his home here after being bed-fast for seven weeks with a broken hip. He had been in poor health. Mr. Sankey was born in Jackson County, Iowa, October 20, 1852, and came to Walnut with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sankey, from Blairstown, Iowa, in 1873. Shortly after coming to Walnut, he carried mail from Walnut to Red Oak by team before the Rock Island built the Carson and Griswold branch.

On October 18, 1882, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Hogan.

Mr. Sankey had been an auctioneer for fifty years. He was at one time in the furniture business with S.R. Comer and was a township trustee, a member of the board of education, a councilman for twenty five years and always active in politics.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Sankey; one son, B.W. Sankey of Atlantic, one granddaughter, Ruth Sankey of Atlantic; two brothers, Frank of Walnut and Charley of Alaska.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the home. Rev. Mr. Harding of the Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Cemetery.
