Colonel LAFAYETTE SHERWOOD, aged 82 years and 6 months, old soldier and resident of this city since 1879, died at 1 a.m. Saturday at Mercy Hospital as the result of a fractured hip sustained three weeks ago in a fall in his room. He is survived by two daughters and one son. They are: Mrs. Lotia Dwinnel of this city, Mrs. W.B. McCubbin of Des Moines and H.B. Sherwood of Omaha.
Lafayette Sherwood was born in Delaware County, Ohio, April 14, 1832. He came to Iowa in 1854 and settled in Clinton County. He joined the union army October 16, 1862, as a private in Company F, Thirty-First Iowa Volunteer Infantry.
During his service he was in battles of Chickasaw Bay, the siege of Vicksburg, the Battle of Chattanooga, storming of Missionary Ridge, the battles of Lookout Mountain and Rossville Gap and the Kenesaw Mountains. He was with Sherman on his march to the sea and marched from Savannah to Washington. At the close of the war he was discharged June 27, 1865 at Camp Heron, Iowa. He was a charter member of the Union Veterans Legion, Encampment No. 8, organized in 1886.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. G.W. Snyder of Omaha and Rev. Edgar Price of the First Christian Church. Burial will take place in the Union Veteran Legion grounds in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
