Joice M. Shortley

Joice M. Shortley, who entertained audiences at silent fillms in the 1920s died Thursday at a local hospital. She was 88. She was born in Atlantic and lived in Council Bluffs since 1906.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, a 1916 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School, and a former organ and piano teacher. Mrs. Shortley who lived at 1623 Madison Avenue, played at many churches and entertained in Yellowstone National Park for one year. She also played the organ at the old World Theater in Omaha and at silent films in New York in the 1920s.

She belonged to various music organizations and was a former member of the Altrusa Club. Mrs. Shortley is the widow of Howard Shortley, who died in 1978.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Susan) Palmer of Council Bluffs; a son, Howard F. Shortley, Jr. of Sacramento, California; five grandsons and one great grandson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cutler Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Lyle Lee, pastor of First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. The casket will remained closed.
