Alice A. (Whitmore) (Mortensen) Soppe

Alice A. (Whitmore) [Mortensen] Soppe, 89, of 505 S. 6th Street died friday afternoon at a local hospital following a short period of failing health. She was born in the area known as Downsville in Norwalk Township. As a small child, she moved to Boomer Township where she was graduated from eighth grade at the country school. At the age of 16, she moved to Neola where she lived until moving to Council bluffs in 1951.

She was the daughter of Samuel Whitmore and Alice Jane Downs, who were pioneer settlers in the area. Mrs. Soppe was preceded in death by two husbands, Clarence Mortensen, who died in 1923 and George F. Soppe, who died in 1963. She was a member of the Neola Presbyterian Church and the Council Bluffs Senior Center. She was a former member of the Neola American Legion Post 330 Women's Auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge.

Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Oscar (Ruth) Deveraux of Billings, Montana, Mrs. Chester (Claretta) Whaley of Greybull, Wyoming, Mrs. Jack (Alice) Schnitker of Laramie, Wyoming, and Mrs. Dean (Geraldine) Gardner of Neola; two sons, Clarence L. "Buzz" Mortensen of Glendale, Arizona and George Soppe of Neola; 30 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Neola Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Neola Cemetery.
