THE OBITUARY OF

Samuel Steele

Samuel Steele

While stepping out of the way of an eastbound train on the Union Pacific tracks yesterday, SAMUEL STEELE, aged 89 years was struck by an eastbound switch engine and hurled from the track. The accident happened about 11 o'clock near the Union Pacific transfer and Mr. Steele received injuries from which he died at 4 o'clock in the afternoon at the General Hospital. Mr. Steele was picking coal from the tracks. He saw the westbound train approaching on the track on which he was walking and stepped out of its way. The eastbound switch engine struck him from behind as he stepped on the next track. Mr. Steele was hurled for some distance, but was not rendered unconscious. The ambulance was called and he was taken to the hospital, where his wounds were dressed and his case declared to be hopeless. The left arm was found to be broken above the elbow, causing a compound comminuted fracture, the bone sticking through the flesh. The hips were bruised, the right arm bruised and skinned from the elbow to the wrist and there was a cut over the left eye.

Mr. Steele is survived by three sons and three daughters. Sons are James of Council Bluffs, William of Lewis Township, and Jacob of Parkman, Wyoming. Two daughters, Mrs. P.J. Arnold and Mrs. Parks reside in Council Bluffs. Mrs. Cadwallader is a resident of Lincoln, Nebraska. The remains of Mr. Steele will be taken to Lewis Township for burial. It is probable that an inquest will be held by Coroner Treynor today to determine the blame, if any, for the accident.
