Walter J. Tierney

WALTER J. TIERNEY, 71, 509 S. 8th Street, retired city fireman, died Tuesday at a local hospital after a brief illness. A native of Weller, Iowa, he was a Council Bluffs resident 44 years. He retired in 1946 as captain of the Council Bluffs Fire Department after 22 years of service. Since that time, Tierney had worked as a dispatcher for Peoples Natural Gas. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. Mr. and Mrs. Tierney observed their 50th wedding anniversary in August 1966.

Survivors include: widow, Ellie; three daughters, Mrs. Eileen Helms of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Ann Blackburn and Mrs. Helen Murphy both of Council Bluffs; five brothers, Leo of Council Bluffs, Michael of Hammond, Indiana, William of Melrose, Edward of Russell and John of Albia; three sisters, Mrs. James Cummins of Lovilla, Mrs. Alec O'Brien and Miss Marguerite Tierney, both of Council Bluffs; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Requiem Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Costin as celebrant. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
