Plane Crash Kills C.B. Man in War

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Vergamini, have been notified of the death of their son, Chief Warrant Officer Douglas S. Vergamini, 25. He was killed in action June 26 in Vietnam while piloting a military aircaft on a combat operation. The aircraft was fired upon, crashed and burned.

He is the 32nd area serviceman killed in the war and the second local man to be killed this year. Vergamini was due home from Vietnam July 11 and was to be assigned to Germany.

He graduated from the University of Iowa in February 1968, and was drafted in May of 1968. He was a 1963 Abraham Lincoln High School graduate.

Services for Vergamini

Services for Chief Warrant Officer Douglas S. Vergamini, 25, of Council bluffs will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Broadway United Methodist Church. The Rev. Donald Arthur will officiate. Interment will be at Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Vergamini was killed in action June 26 in Vietnam while piloting a helicopter on a combat mission.

He was born in Council Bluffs, was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church, was a graduate from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1963 and in 1968 from the University of Iowa. He entered military service in May 1968 and was married June 18, 1969 to Sandra K. Pedersen. Mrs. Vergamini's parents are Dr. and Mrs. Paul D. Pedersen, former Council Bluffs physician.

Other survivers include: parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Vergamini of Council Bluffs, two brothers, John L. of Council Bluffs and Robert of Blair, NE; and grandfather, Silvio Vergamini of Council Bluffs.

The body will be at the Meyer Chapel from 8:30 a.m. Wednesday until noon on Thursday. The casket will remain closed at all times.
