WALNUTWalnut is a thriving town of one thousand population, situated in Layton Township, forty seven miles from Council Bluffs, four hundred and forty six miles from Chicago by way of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and six and one half miles from Avoca, in a rich beautiful high rolling prairie country. This is one of the best grain markets in the county, with good facilities for shipping, and has three dealers who are always ready to pay the highest market price of which Avoca and other intermediate towns have already found out. It is said that Walnut does as much shipping as Avoca, which is saying a great deal, for Avoca is one of the best towns of its size in Iowa. [1880-81 City Directory, Submitted by Darlene Vergamini]
