THE OBITUARY OF

Charles M. Whitney

Charles M. Whitney

Charles M. Whitney, who resided with his family three miles south of Underwood near the Downsville Cemetery, met with a fatal accident Tuesday afternoon at his home while grinding feed and died yesterday morning. No one was at home at the time of the accident. Mr. Whitney operated the feed mill with a gasoline engine and in the process of grinding his coat caught on the shafting and drew him into it. When his body was drawn close to the shafting he was whipped around and around with each revolution of the rapidly moving wheel and each time his head struck the ground, beating it into a pulp. After a time, however, his clothing broke and he was released, but was unconscious.

A neighbor passing some few minutes later noticed that things did not appear to be all right about the machinery and went over to investigate. He found Mr. Whitney in a sitting posture against a portion of the engine and when he lifted him up saw his head was a mass of blood and flesh. He supposed the man was dead and returned to his wagon and drove on to the home of William Whitney, a brother of the unfortunate man, who lived in the next house beyond.

Together the two men returned and they both thought Mr. Whitney was dead. The machinery was still running and after shutting it off they carried him into the house. As they carried him he seemed to revive and they summoned Drs. Wyland of Underwood, Besore of McClelland and Merritt of Council Bluffs. The three physicians worked with him from 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon until his time of death yesterday morning.

He was 45 years of age and was a well known farmer. He leaves a wife and six children. The sons are: George, Walter and Earl; the daughters are Jane and Hazel at home and Mrs. Blanche Smith of this city; one brother, William, near Underwood, and a sister, Mrs. George Brownelly of Bigley, IA.

The funeral will be held will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Rev. Joshua Carlisle of Underwood will officiate and interment will be in the Downsville Cemetery. (Section A, Row 9, February 17, 1868-January 7, 1914)
