C.A. White, State Geoligist, states that along the proposed railroad route, in the counties of Monroe, Mahaska and Wapello, there are fully fiteen miles underlaid with a good bed of coal.  He purposes to visit the northern part of the State, and spend the greater part of the season in investigating the fuel question, as regard to peat beds.   Daily State Register, 6/13/1867 [Contributed by: Norm Gentry -2008]
