Caverly ~ Raymond

The Nuptials of Miss Evangeline Raymond, of this city, and Mr. Clarence C. Caverly, of Webster City, Iowa.

The ceremony which united in wedlock Miss Evangeline Raymond and Mr. Clarence C. Caverly occurred at the residence of the bride’s parents last evening precisely at 6 o’clock. The rite was performed by Rev. D. Keeling, of St. Mark’s, in accordance with the beautiful and impressive ritual of the Episcopal church.

The wedding party numbered eighteen and was composed of the immediate relatives and friends of the two families.

The residence was exquisitely decorated with blooming plants and cut flowers. At the appointed hour, preceded by little Miss Mildred Minard and Master Delmore Crockett, the former acting as pillow bearer and the latter carrying a basket of sweet peas, the bride and groom took their places, all moving to the strains of Mendelssohn’s wedding march, and exchanged those sacred vows which made them man and wife. The groom was attired in evening costume, while the bride wore a beautiful and highly becoming striped taffeta silk.

The reception which followed was brilliant and largely attended. The bride and groom received their friends in an alcove of the drawing room, which was banked with beautiful flowers and surmounted by an arch of smilax and roses, the same under which they were wed. For more than an hour they were showered with congratulations, good wishes and expressions of esteem, and never were these sentiments uttered with deeper sincerity.

The bride is not only one of Aberdeen’s most beautiful and accomplished daughters, she is a universal favorite as well. Possessed of fair features, rare talents, a gentle, loving temperament, and an unusual sunny disposition, she is beloved and esteemed by all citizens, and most by those who know her best. The only child of fond parents, a score of households regard her with the affection of a favorite daughter, or elder sister much beloved. The groom is a promising young business man and the many friends of the bride surrender her to his keeping with the full consciousness that her happiness will be thereby increased.

The wedding presents were many and beautiful, and made a magnificent display, but, elaborate and costly as they were, they but feebly expressed the sentiments of good will cherished by the donors.

At 9 o’clock, Mr. and Mrs. Caverly departed for Minneapolis, in which city they will remain for a day before proceeding to Webster City, Iowa, where they will be at home after May 15th. A host of friends accompanied them to the depot and the first movement of the train was the signal for a deluge of rice, a chorus of cheerful farewells and a final interchange of pleasantries. If one-half the wished of their friends are realized, Mr. and Mrs. Caverly should be, and undoubtedly will be, the happiest married people in Christendom as long as they live.

Tomorrow evening a reception will be tendered the couple at their home in Webster City, which town will take on a new importance to the people of Aberdeen, since its walls will in the future protect this city’s favorite daughter and her chosen mate.

Davis ~ Spaulding

A Romantic Western Wedding

Elijah Davis, 65, and Miss Fannie Spaulding, 67, were married Friday night at Wedster City, Ia. There is a romance connected with the union of this couple.

In 1851, when Elijah Davis was 18 and Miss Spaulding was 20, she was one of a party of five in a rowboat that was upset in the Ohio river. Davis rescued her from death by drowning, together with the other four. He began paying attention to her, but owing to the objections of her parents they were never married. Davis left the neighborhood, vowing he would never forget the girl, and she in turn pledged that she would be true. Davis went to the far West, and in time Miss Spaulding moved with relatives to Iowa.

In a deal that Davis made while in the West, he came into possession of an Iowa farm, and while looking at his property on a trip especially for the purpose, two months ago, he discovered that his old sweetheart, with her younger brother, was his tenant.

He had not heard from her for 40 years, but both had remained single, and at his request they have decided to pass the remainder of their lives together.
