North Shell Rock Cemetery
[partial listing]

Very well taken care of Cemetery, out in the country, easily visible and just off the road. No parking place, just
pull off the road. Cornfields surround it, though there is one house across the street with a very friendly Chocolate
Labrador dog who came bounding across the street to stay with us during the whole time we were there. He made it
a little difficult to leave. The mosquitoes were also very friendly - apparently never having tasted human flesh
before. In the back of the cemetery in the shade of the trees (where of course was where the tombstones we wanted
were), we were literally swarmed upon by mosquitoes. Bring Bug Spray!
There are broken unreadable stones, which have been piled up under a tree.
We were told the cemetery is now closed to burials unless you have a pre-existing plot.
Pictures supplemented by referral to the published 1988 Cemetery Listing.
The information below comes from that publishing (which was in turn
taken from various history books):
North Shell Rock Cemetery is located about 2 2/3 miles west and 2 miles north of Northwood in Section 30 of Grove
Township.
"The land for the cemetery was obtained from Ole Aslaksen Ljsabek in 1859. The cemetery was established and
dedicated the following year.
At the time that the cemetery was established it was a part of the newly established Shell Rock Lutheran Congregation
that had been incorporated in November, 1859. Early burials included Hans Gunefson in 1867; Bendick Evenson, 1869
age 73, Torjer Lee, 1862 Civil War casualty. The Shell Rock Congregation merged with various other congregations
and (at the time of printing) was a part of First Lutheran Church, located in the town of Northwood. (The cemetery is not in the town)
The records of burials for both North and South Shell Rock Cemeteries were located (at the time of printing) in
the home of Cornell Knutson, rural Northwood."
