WILLIS, IDA

OBITUARY

Ida, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Willis was born in Hancock county, Illinois, November 1 1861, and was called to her reward above at her home in Moran, Kan., May 14, 1931. She was one of a family of seven children. Her father and mother and her sister Maude have passed to the great beyond. Those living are Mrs. Devia McCoy, Mrs. John Jenkins and Mrs. Will Meyers, all of whom live near; Sam Willis of Iola and Jim Willis of Clovis, New Mexico. She grew to womanhood in Illinois, and was married to Mastin Cox, February 13, 1881. They, and also her father and family, came to Kansas in the spring of 1886 and have since resided here. Four children came to bless their marriage, but the three sons died in infancy. The daugher, Mrs. Verna Vestal, was spared to comfort and care for them in their declining years. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist church, and was a devoted Christian, and attended the meetings of her church, far and near. Her home was always open to her church friends and many sermons were preached in her home. Always an industrious woman, she did her part, and was never happier than when doing something for the comfort or pleasure of her family. Like the beautiful May day on which she was called to the Father's mansion of Light, in which the zephyrs of the spring day were being wafted to the cheeks of mankind and the birds were warbling their notes of cheerful song, and the sweet roses were permeating the air with their perfume, so was her life an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact.

After the death of her husband, she sold her farm near Mildred and came to Moran to make her home near her daughter and family. She has been ill about three months and has been a patient sufferer--ready and willing to meet her Heavenly Father, who has promised there shall be no more suffering or sorrow over there. Besides those of the home circle already mentioned she leaves two grandchildren, Mildred and Charles Vestal, a sister-in-law, Ruth Cox of Carthage, Ill., and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Fair view church at Mildred by Rev. Williams of Moran, Friday afternoon, and she was laid to rest beside her husband in Fair view cemetery.

The family has the sympathy of many friends. Those from a distance who were here to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Haynes and daughter of Ottawa; Mr. and Mrs. McCarty, Ed Shively and Mrs. McGuire, Bronson; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Lewis, of Humboldt; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Carpenter , Newton; Sam Willis and family, Iola; Charley McCoy and family, Selma, and Roy Myers and family of Iola. His paternal grandfather was born in Virginia but at the beginning of slavery trouble moved to Ohio. He and his family were of the Quaker faith and traced their ancestry back to Scotland through emigrants who came to America before the revolutionary war. At the age of 18 he enlisted in Company A, 26th Indiana Vol.Inf., in which he served 3 years and saw much hard service in the long siege of Vicksburg and many other engagements. He received several wounds some of which troubled him to the end of his life. After traveling over eastern Kansas and part of Indian territory he returned to Iola and bought the first 80 acres of the farm he left to his children, paying for it by working by the month for cattle men. Among them were: McClure, Brundage, and Brooks and the late Judge Arnold. He then began farming for himself and through his industry and management added two more eighties to the first.
