Organized in 1872, Barton County is the only county in the state of Kansas named after a woman - nurse, Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, and Civil War heroine. Great Bend is the county seat and largest city; besides the cities listed below left, other communities include Boyd, Dent Spur, Dundee, Heizer, Hitschmann, Odin, Redwing and Stickney.
