JANUARY

1. Charles Warren and the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Heath of Towanda died.

2. Mrs. J. L. Hutson died.

4. District convention of Fraternal Aid Association met at El Dorado

5. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Smith, a son. Miss Carrie Stewart and Earnest Berry, of Benton were married.

7. Mrs. N. E. Shyrer died.

8. H. J. Rucker of Augusta died. Mary Thomas-Helm died in the asylum at Osawatomie.

9. Annual change of county officers V. A. Osborn and Judge J. M. Randall succeeded themselves as court clerk and Probate Judge; J. E. Mathers succeeded K. M. Holcomb as county superintendent; E. B. Brumback succeeded H. W. Schumacher as county attorney; E. L. Snodgrass succeeded Thos Ohlsear as county commissioner.

10. The fist biennial county convention of Butler county M. W. A. met at El Dorado – born to Mr. and Mrs. W. A. McDaniel, a son. Miss Clara F. Kilpatrick of St. Louis was married to Seth Fraizer.

11. Miss Caroline C. Peterson was married to Cyrus N. Kennedy.

12. Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Greely gave a reception to Mr. and Mrs. Seth Fraizer. Miss Maud Dixon and Clarence Clover were married at Joplin, Missouri.

14. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. W. F. McGinnis. L. DeMoss home in Hickory Township was   burned.

16. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Rainey, a daughter.

18. Mrs. Ella Songer and F. D. Gates, of Rosalia, were married. The study of music was adopted in the city schools. Mrs. Wm. Ramsey of Benton, died.

19. The Mammoth Minstrels, local talent, gave an entertainment for the Free Library. J. W.     Skaer’s hardware store at Augusta burned.

21. Wm. H. Baxter died at Guthrie.

22. Mrs Blache Lamb Roberts died at Arkansas City. Born, to W. R. Cain and wife of Lincoln   township, a son.

24. Miss Minnie Mitchell of Prospect township died. J. Ryan, of Benton, died at Wichita.

25. Miss Anna Doornbos was married to E. H. Nichols

26. Born, to W. A. Thompson and wife, a son.

29. J. S. McCaskey died.

30. A daughter was born to Wes. Bicknell and wife.

31. J. B. Huston died at Winterset, Iowa; H. H. Gardner died.

FEBRUARY

1. James Joseph of Potwin died. Miss Flora Clary was married to George Clary.

2. The infant child of Bernard Ramsey and wife died. Sophia, the 11-year-old daughter of L. T. Griggs and wife of West Branch died. On the occasion of Major F. C. Armstrong’s 40th         birthday the pastors of the city presented him with the “New Voice,” as an expression of         their esteem for the Doctor and for the manly stand he had taken in the 21st Kansas             Volunteers against the canteen.  F. M. Bernard of Lincoln, Nebraska, purchased the El Dorado   gas works.

3. Miss Hattie, daughter of B. F. Arnold, of Haverhill, died.

6. Born, to J. S. Lehr and wife, a boy.

7. A son was born to L. W. Robison and wife. Born, to Harry Lines and wife a girl.

8. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Knowles a daughter, and a daughter to I. M. Smith and wife of Prospect Township. W. H. Thomas died. Miss Laura Cour and J. R. Florea of Pontiac were     married. Miss Grace Russell was married to James Hobkirk of Beaumont.

9. David Powell and Miss Autha Teter were married. Mrs. Amanda Stearns, of Towanda, died.

10. The Lincoln school, El Dorado, celebrated, Lincoln’s birthday.

11. Born, to Charles Kitzleman and wife, a son.

12. Cyrus Webb of Augusta, died at Wichita.

13. Isaac W. Young died. The Dramatic Club put “Our Boys” on the boards at Ellet’s Opera     House.

15. Thos Farrar’s house on South Main street was burned.

16. The K. P. district convention met at El Dorado. LaFayette Poe, of Potwin, and Mrs. Benjamin Stanton of Benton, died.

17. Postoffice at Andover robbed of $60 worth of stamps.

18. A daughter was born to James Jarman and wife. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Buchanan, of Chelsea, a son.

19. Rev. W. W. Curtis resigned as pastor of the Presbyterian church. August Malan died.

20. Born to I. A. Rich and wife, a son, and to R. B. Leonard and wife, a daughter.

21. Born to August Wasl and wife, a son, and to Bert Smith and wife, of Burns, a son.

22. Knights and ladies of Security fair opened. Miss Jennie Whiteside was married to Roy Nye of Fairview, Miss Lizzie Harwick and H. H. Nance of Latham were married.

23. Born to George Scott and wife, a girl.

25. The Butler county fair grounds were purchased.

26. An infant child of E. C. Nolte died. J. H. Neiman’s house, south of Brainerd, was burned.   Miss Frona Mossman of Towanda was married to Louis Heinnen of Potwin.

28. A meeting of Butler county citizens was held at the court house to form a temperance       organization.

MARCH

3. B. F. Jackson, father of Mrs. J. M. McAnally, died.

4. Joseph Barker of Pleasant township died.

5. The house occupied by Wm. Sproul, in north El Dorado, was burned.

9. Safes in the post office and Nelson’s store at Latham were robbed. The safe at the Santa Fe depot at Douglass was blown open. Born to F. M. Hall and wife of Economy, a boy. Miss     Lydia Miller, of Benton, was married to John Campbell of Logan.

10. Richard Farleys house at Latham was burned.

14. Miss Bertha White and J.B. White, of Gordon were married.

16. Died, at Douglass, Mrs. Louis Parrahum.

20. Died, Mrs. Harriet Guinn.

26. Ida, the 13 year old daughter of W. A. McDaniel and wife, died. Died, Mrs. Rev. J. R. Cooper.

29. The Southwest Kansas Conference of the M. E. Church convened at El Dorado. Miss Minnie E. Cooper was married to Henry B. Rogers.

30. Died, G. D. Chaney of Murdock township and Charles Boyke of Towanda.

APRIL

1. Married, Miss Rhoda Bogue to Edward Prosser.

4. Married, Miss Minnie Horton to George E. Garrison. City election, W. W. Bugbee elected mayor of El Dorado.

5. The Dramatic Club presented “The Castaways.” Died, Mrs. Henry Owen.

7. The city school observed Arbor Day. The Butler County Fair Association was organized. Died, Thomas Henderson, at Haverhill.

9. The 3-year-old daughter of Ed Green and wife, and Bertha Shinn died.

10. Married, Miss Minnie Sanders to J. L. Porter.

12. Married, Miss Grace Gillespie to R. I. Lemon. Died, S. U. Maxwell.

15. Died, at Oklahoma City, W. J. Gault, ex-mayor of El Dorado.

16. Died, at Leon, Lillian Martin

17. Died, B. F. Case, Mrs. Katurah Longstreth and J. W. Williams. Born, to Willis Allen and wife, a girl.

18. Died, Wm. Greer. Died, in Logan township, Mrs. O. B. Bunch.

19. Died, Mrs. Theodore Creek. Married at Perrysburg, Ohio, Miss Lydia Pfesta to Henry Bonnel of Rosalia.

21. Died, Wm. Hardy and Mrs. Wm Money. Married, Miss Anna Mason to George Stunkark of Potwin. R. J. Maulsby and Dr. J. L. Owen purchased the Corner Drug Store from A. J. Lesh.

23. Commencement of the Douglass schools. Married, Miss Berenice Luttgerding to Harry Wiedeman.

26. Died, Wm. McDowell.

MAY

1. Died, Mrs. J. A. McKenzie. Roof of Douglass opera house blown off.

4. Died, at Joplin, Missouri, Mrs. A. Musselman.  Married, in Cincinnati Miss Rose Shidler to Guy Rohr.

5. Born, to Morrell Caldwell and wife, a daughter. The High School Alumni gave an entertainment at Ellet’s Opera House.

7. Died, Mrs. Harriet Robinson.

8. Died, the 4-year-old daughter of W. G. Baum.

9. The house on Mrs. Jeff Stearnsfarm, near Towanda was burned.

10. Married, Miss Martha Layton to D. B. Stanfield. Born, to Bert Martin and wife, a boy.

11. Graduation exercises of El Dorado High School, seven graduates.

12. Kenoyer’s Bank at Leon was robbed of $2,000.

13. Died, at Benton, Mrs. Fred Stiles.

15. Married, Mrs. Josie Pattison and Harry Bartelson.

17. Died, at Chelsea, Mrs. James Best, Part of the long trestle in the Flint Hills was burned.

18. Wm O’Conner and Wm Winegarner, of Benton, were struck by a train in Wichita and instantly killed, Married, in Wichita, Miss B. L. Taylor to George A. Young.

22. A great hail storm visited the county and did much damage to window glass and crops.

24. Married, Miss Ruth Green to C. F. McDowell. Married, at Leon, Miss Ollie Blakeman to Dr. C. B. Cline of Illinois. Married, Miss Tempy Powers to J. A. Burnett.

25. Died, at El Dorado, E. P. Leaming; at Cripple Creek.

26. Fifth Annual Interstate commencement of the Western Conservatory of Music at Ellet’s Opera House.

27. Married, Mrs. C. Crabtree to John Griffith of Leon.

28. Died, T. J. Ehlers. Born, to W. F. McIntire and wife, a boy.

30. Mrs. J. L. Stewart of Whitewater committed suicide.

JUNE

1. Married, Miss Elizabeth Maulsby to J. P. Brackett of Raton, New Mexico.

4. Born, to George Maxwell and wife, a daughter. Died, Henry Moore of Durneben.

5. The Teachers’ County Institute opened.

7. Died, Mrs. Docia Miller, mother of Mrs. G. S. Dilts.

8. A heavy rain came and put all streams in the county out of banks and did much damage to crops. Born, to Cal Stewart and wife, of Whitewater a son.

9. N. F. Frazier had a narrow escape from drowning in the high waters of the Walnut river. Archie Reed of Rosalia drove his team into the deep water near Vandenberg’s and it was drowned. A farewell reception was given Dr. and Mrs. Armstrong.

10. Died, Homer, son of J. R. Hawthorn and wife of Benton.

13. Born, to Fred Carr and wife, a son, and to E. L. Temple and wife, a son.

16. Sixteen years ago El Dorado was blown away by a tornado. Considerable loss of life and great damage.

18. L. L. Kiser organized a Young People’s Society of the Christian Endeavor at Leon.

20. Born, to M. E. Ball and wife, a son.

21 Married, Miss Della Dowse to James Feeley.

22. Born to J. F. Huston and wife a son, Died, at Rosalia, James Woods. Married, Miss Cora Linn, of Salina, to Harry Leydig of Clifford township.

24. Died, at Augusta, Daniel Lines

27. Married, Miss Blanche McBroom to James Steven.

28. Died, in Benton township, Mrs. John Foutch.

29. George Johnson’s house in Clifford township was burned. Born to Will Shyrer and wife, a son; to L. A. Bush and wife, a son; and to J. A. Milbourne and wife, a son.

30. Miss Sally Diemart died. Born, to Edgar Spaulding and wife, a girl.

JULY

1. W. A. Myers house was burned. Citizens State Bank began business.

3. Independence Day celebrated. Fair association gave a successful track matinee. Irvin Vint and Miss Rose White, of Douglass, eloped and were married.

6. Died, Charles Summers.

7. Olse Lee was drowned.

9. Died, Maggie Gee.

10. Born, to A. I. Peffley and wife, a girl.

11. Died, Mrs. Ursula Douglass.

13. Born, to R. F. Washburn and wife, a son.

15. Miss Bertha M. Hollenbeck to Jacob Miller.

16. Died, Mrs. Mary Rainey of Indianola.

17. Lew Schmucker and Miss Carrie Wilson, of Emporia, were married. Born to H. T. Brown and wife a girl.

18. Born to Howard Bartels and wife, a girl. Died, the infant child of Isaac Essex and wife.

19. Born to Roy Day and wife, a girl.

20. Died Mrs. John H. Cooper of Chelsea township.

23. Died, the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Gaskell of Pontiac, also Mrs. John Teter.

24. Miss Edna Curtis was, with two others while bathing near Caldwelk drowned. Born, to Frank Lestberman and wife, a girl. Married, Miss Rose Jossi to George Pickerell.

25. Married Mrs. Isabel Taylor to G. W. Clippinger.

26. Born, to F. H. Biggs and wife, of Potwin a boy.

28. Died, Charles E. son of Wm. Leyton and wife.

29. Married, Miss Olive McKenzie to Will C. Tomlin.

30. Emanuel Church of the Evangelical Association five miles south of El Dorado was dedicated.

31. Died, Mrs. M. H. Taylor

AUGUST

4. Strauss Hoffman was drowned at Kansas City. Married, Miss Nellie James to Walter Maurer. Born, to R. L. Fowler and wife, of Potwin, a girl.

6. An infant child of Wm. McDaniel and wife, died.

7. Died, at Black Hawk, Colorado, Mrs. John McGinnis. The 4 year old child of Theo Creek and wife, of Pontiac, died.

9. Married, at Potwin, Miss Addie McCraner to Colin E. Stewart. The general store and post office at Rosalia was broken into and a lot of clothing and $50 worth of stamps were stolen. Married, at Sycamore Springs, Miss Kate Campbell to John Diller. Lightning struck Jos House’s residence near Douglass and it was burned. Died, at Burgess, John Ellis.

10. Born to L. G. Gill and wife, of Towanda, a girl.

12. A barn on the place occupied by Frank Klenze on Vine street was burned.

14. Born, to Hugh Small and wife, a girl and to James Oliver and wife, a boy. Married, Miss Ada Bump to Earl Akers of Stafford.

15. Married, Miss Hattie Dusthlmer to Robert Long. An infant child of Henry March and wife, of Augusta, died.

16. Died at Potwin, Mrs. S. S. Hanes. Born to Charles Bogardus and wife, a girl and to Arthur Ryan and wife a boy.

17. Born to F. B. Lawrence and wife a girl and to Charles Wilson and wife a girl.

19. Born to Lee Reed and wife a girl, to Charles Larkins and wife, a girl.

20. Died, Chester Folinsbee and the infant child of Albert Williams and wife. Married, Mrs. Elizabeth Fuller to Albert Harvey.

21. Born to Robert Emmet Glass and wife, a son. Died, Miss Bessie Keyes. Born, to George Brown and wife, a son. Married, Miss Cora Mendenhall to Peter Johnson of Little Walnut.

22. Died, Mrs. Mary Bell, sister of J. E. McCully.

23. Married Miss Dora Nelson to Greges Hanson. Born to Jerry Meakin and wife a son. Died, the infant child of Charles Larkins and wife. Born to R. C. Clark and wife of Latham, a son, to John Ewalt and wife, of Latham a son.

24. Died, J. H. Carter of Augusta.

25. Judge Dennison and wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

26. A. S. Hoffman, formerly of Augusta, died in Kansas City.

27. Died, at the Mo. Pac. Hospital in Kansas City, Daniel Boyle. Married, Miss Patterson to Lee Mitchell of Prospect.

28. Died, Mrs. J. J. Singley of Fairview township

29. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Kelley, a boy. Married, Miss Marie Harding to L. L. Stearns.

30. Born to Gus Fuller and wife, a daughter. Married, Miss Bertha Peffley to J. C. Boellner, Miss Elsie Thomas to Orville Garrett, both of Douglass, Miss Ethel Faust to Will Schroeder, Miss May Hutton to L. A. Milligan.

SEPTEMBER

1. Born to W. E. Turner and wife, a boy. Miss Jennie Noble gave a very successful elocutionary entertainment at Chelsea. J. E. Robbins large barn on North Main street burned.

4. Married, Miss Augusta Richie to Clair Cole, both of Augusta.

5. Born to John Doornbos and wife a son.

7. Soliders Reunion at Douglass. Died, Mrs. Ann Coxe.

11. Lew Bowie purchased M. Hayward Morrison’s music business. Married, Miss Marry Rosenwig to Peter J Haen of Potwin, Miss Carrie Coffett to J. W. Young of Sycamore township.

12. Died, Mrs. J. B. King.  Born to G. W. Neal and wife, of Whitewater, a son.

15. Born, to V. P. Mooney and wife, a son. Died in Lincoln Township, Mrs. L. B. Gain. Old man Litzkus poured a heavy load of shot into a crowd of ticktackers and several of the young men were severely wounded.

19. Born to John Randall and wife, of Rosalia, a girl. R. I. Varnell bought and took possession of the People’s Market.

20. Guy Mabie, who won the Helen Gould scholarship, left for the University of New York.

22. Died, the 2 year old son of W. H. Taylor and wife, of Murdock township.

24. Died, Thomas Cox.

25. The sixth annual reunion of Butler county soldiers and sailors began at Gordy park. The Ft. Scott local was wrecked 12 miles west of Rosalia.

27. Married, Miss Edna Chaney to Charles Snowden; Miss Mary Whitham to C. E. Rudolph of Sycamore township.

30. Born to Jack Lyons and wife, a son; to Chas Poflinbarger and wife of West Branch, a girl; to D. E. Peck and wife, a boy.

OCTOBER

2. Butler County Fair opened. Married, Miss Allexson to B. Meador.

3. Miss Janet Gardner was chosen Maid of Honor to the Ft. Scott street fair.

4. Old Settler’s Meeting in Floral Hall at the fair grounds. Married, Mrs. M. E. Fisher to Harry Grant.

7. Died, at her home in Towanda, Mrs. Mary E. Weatherby.

10. Born to J. L. Hobbs and wife of Newton, a boy. Married, Miss Eva Freeman to Wm. Lemon. Died, Mrs. Thos Colgan of Spring township.

13. Died, the infant child of Mrs. Fannie Middleton Greer.

14. Married, Miss Pearl Olin to J. A. McKenzie Jr.

15. The infant child of Oscar Moore and wife of Towanda, died. Married, Miss Cora E. Mitchell of Prospect township to John M. McGuirk.

16. Married Miss Edith Wilson to Sylvester King, both of Rosalia. M. G. Wells sold the Delmonico restaurant to Warren W. Conner. Died, at Benton, Mrs. Thursda Clark.

17. Married, Miss Myrtle Russel to L. D. Sopher, both of Leon. Married, at Guthrie, Miss Dayse Niblack to R. E. Morrison.

18. Born to Grant Horner and wife a son. Married, Mrs. May Hefferd to Mr. Will Carter, Died, Erastus Beasen of Douglass. Married, Miss Geraldine Cornelius to Clinton Osborn. Married, Miss Chloe Carter to L. S. Early.

19. The 3 year old son of Richard Curd and wife, died. Married, P. W. Lantz to Dr. J. A. McKenzie, Miss Edith Davidson to Henry Littlefield.

24. Born, to James Edgar and wife of Beaumont, a son; to Otto Donaldson and wife of Chelsea, a son. Married, Mrs. Sarah Robinson to E. J. Daily. The long distance telephone line from Wichita was completed to El Dorado. Died, Miss Mary Reetz of Augusta.

25. Roy Diemart, of Murdock township accidentally shot his left hand off.

26. Married, Miss Carrie Thompson to Merlin Knight, both of Keighley. Sam Cupples was killed in a mine explosion in Colorado.

27. The Ministers and Members Quarterly Conference of the Walnut Valley Baptist Association convened at the Baptist church. J. C. Walters was found dead near Economy school house.

30. Gus Weil an old time Mo. Pac. conductor died at Cripple Creek, Colorado. Died, F. B. Risley of Beaumont.

31. Born, to Harry Collins and wife a girl.

NOVEMBER

2 Flag day was observed by the El Dorado public schools. Major W. E. Kilgore died.

3. Born to Jack Gaffney and wife, a son.

4. Died, Mrs. Catherine Hicks El Dorado, John Hoy of Sycamore Springs.

5. Died, the infant son of Marion Hunt and wife. Married at Latham, Miss Rachel Charles to Samuel Baker.

6. A reception was given at the court house for the Bale brothers and Leman Cowles who were members of the 20th Kansas, just returned from the Philippine Islands. John Hanes and wife celebrated the 7th anniversary of their marriage. Mrs. Josie Lehr purchased the Bon Ton restaurant. A farewell reception was tendered H. D. Williams and wife at the residence of E. A. Makepeace. A football team was organized. Born to Wm. Gee and wife of Durachen, a boy.

7. Election day, H. A. J. Coppins (rep) clerk, G. W. Tolle, (rep) treasurer, Lee Scott (rep) surveyor; H. D. Hill (rep) coroner, B. Broderson (rep) commissioner 1st District, and W. G. Turner (pop) Sheriff; F. S. Allen (Dem) register of deeds, were elected. A reception by the Knights and Ladies of Security was tendered the Bales boys and L. T. Cowles at the residence of C. H. Selig.

8. Married, Miss Doisy Morlan to Chas T. Moore, both of Latham. Boyd Newcomb of Butler county defeated Joe Celers of Nebraska in a corn husking race for $100 a side. L. J. Fuller and wife, of Prospect, celebrated their silver wedding.

9. Died, Mrs. L. W. Barnes of Fairmount township.

10. Died at Rosalia, Mrs. Amos McGuire, and Mrs. VanMoorsel. A home talent concert was given at the Presbyterian church for the benefit of the Ladies Aid Society. Born, to Richard Curd and wife, a son.

13. A son of T. H. Mathers of Andover died.

14. Born to Oscar Early and wife a girl.

15. Married, Miss Olca Morrison to F. R. Bull, and Miss Edith McCraner of Potwin to Wm Brainerd, of Brainerd.

16. Born, to C. H. Hicks and wife, a daughter.

17. Married, Miss Amanda J. Wilson to Kyle E. Pine.

18. Died, at Benton, Joseph Henrie, aged 90 years.

20. J. S. Caldwell bought the Annex Restaurant.

22. Chas. Brittenstein, hospital steward, died in the Philippines.

23. Married, Miss Ethel Hays to Louis Owens. Married, Miss Minnie Vaile to George Mahan.

24. Died, Mrs. Wm McDowell. Married, Miss Anna Way to Chas. E. Owens.

25. Born to Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Holderman, a son. Married, Miss Laura Whiteside to E. B. Griggs.

27. Died, at Leon, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith.

28. Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Devers, a girl

4. Died, Mrs. V. C. Baker at Towanda, J. S. Braley, Major F. C. Armstrong in the Phillippines. Caleb Lloyd was killed by a falling tree on J. W. Parsons farm near Chelsea.

7. Brakeman George Oller had his right leg mashed by the cars at Reece.

8. Born to M. J. Johnson and wife of Leon, a girl.

10. Married, at Latham, Miss Mae Sullivan to Frank Anderson.

11. Died, at Leon, Maud Lynn.

12. Born to Ed Atkinson and wife a son.
