MR. AND MRS. MILES N. AUSTIN OF ROSALIA OBSERVE THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Mr. and Mrs. Miles N. Austin will be honored at an open house reception next Sunday afternoon, December 27 in their farm home four miles southwest of Rosalia, in early observance of their golden wedding anniversary.

The couple will be happy to receive friends and relatives between the hours of 1 and 4 o’clock and have asked that there be no gifts.

Mr. Austin and the former Myrtle McMurry were married in the home of her mother, near Mount Hope, on January 31, 1915.

Their children and their families will be hosts for the open house reception. The group includes Neil Austin and Robert Austin of Severy; Mrs. Harold (Josephine) Smith of Tracy, Calif.; Mrs. Lee (Harriet) Tabor of Towanda; Jim Austin of Rosalia; Miles M. Austin of Alamosa, Colo.; Roger E. Austin of Dover, Del., and Mrs. Tip (Betty Jo) Worthington of Grand Junction, Colo.

Mr. and Mrs. Austin are members of the Rosalia Methodist church. Mr. Austin is engaged – with two of their sons – in the production of purebred Shorthorn cattle.

The many friends of this widely known and highly regarded couple will be pleased to offer congratulations on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary observance next Sunday. (The El Dorado Times – December 23, 1964)

Mr. and Mrs. Miles Austin Receive 180 at Golden Wedding Open House.

The charming and comfortable warm home of Mr. and Mrs. Miles Austin, four miles south west of Rosalia was the scene of a  joyous occasion on Sunday afternoon, December 27, when Mr. and Mrs. Austin were honored at an open house reception in early observance of their golden wedding anniversary.

Approimately 180 persons - friends and relatives from far and near - showered the couple  with gifts of flowers and other mementoes, and more than 150 cards and letters further attested their popularity.

Mrs. Austin wore for the occasion an ensemble of gray wool, and at her shoulder was a gold throated lavendar orchid.

The former Myrtle McMurry and Mr. Austin were married on January 31, 1915, near Burrton in the home of the bride's mother.

Cattle people from far back, Mr. and Mrs. Austin early in their marriage started ranching in Texas and New Mexico. Victimized by the dust bowl, era and later droughts, at length they returned to Butler county some 30 years ago, living at various times in the Leon and Towanda communities, and for the past 20 years in the Rosalia community.

With two of the sons, James Austin of Rosalia and Neil Austin of Severy, Mr. Austin in engaged in the production of purebred shorthorn cattle.

Mr. and Mrs. Austin hold membership in the Rosalia Methodist church and are active in its affairs.

Their eight children all are living and all are established with families. The family gruop includes 30 grandchildren, 27 of whom attended the celebration and 12 great-grandchildren, nine of whom were present.

The five sons are James Austin and Neil Austin as mentioned; Robert Austin of Severy, Miles M. Austin of Alamosa, Colo., and Roger Austin of Dover, Del.

The only absent son was ROger, who, with his wife and 16 months old daughter, Nancy Lee, were unable to secure plane reservations.

The three Austin daughters, all present, are Mrs. Harold (Josephine) Smith of Tracy, Calif., Mrs. Lee (Harriet) Tabor of Towanda and Mrs. Norman (Betty Jo) Worthington, of Grand Junction, Colo.

The children and their familes were hosts for the occasion, and refreshments were served from the staunch square oak table, the orignial dining table of the honorees. Arrangements of golden chrysanthemums were used on the buffet.

Serving at the reception were four granddaughters, Judy Troyer of Haven, Roberta Austin of Severy, Mary Tabor and Larua Tabor of Towanda.

Mrs. Frances Frey of Peck, sister of Mrs. Austin, attended the guest book.

Other close relatives attending were Mrs. Lela Baker and Howard Baker of Hartley, Tex.; Mr. and Mrs. George Austin and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Austin and family, of Bucklin; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Randles of Hutchinson; Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Frey of Peck, Mr. and Mrs. Richard McMurry and family of Mount Hope and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Renfro and family of Augusta.

Fred Dewing of Wichita, a boyhood friend of Mr. Austin took pictures of the various family groups and prepared and arranged an anniversary album for the honorees.

Among the callers were the Rev. and Mrs. Burl Allison, Jr., of Augusta, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Van Buren of Neodesha, Mr. and Mrs. Forney Smith of Fredonia; Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Westrope of La Fontaine, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Caffrey of Sedgwick, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn HIll and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Grimsman of Mount Hope.

Attending from Burrton were Mrs. Dorothy Klein and Gary, Mrs. Mary Westfall, Don Hinners, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Boyle, Mrs. Effie Boyle, Mrs. Bea Blubaugh, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Frentz, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rife, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Pizinger and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hill.

AYRES, LOTTIE & NELSON, MERRIT A.

Marriage license was issued today to Merrit A. Nelson and Miss Lottie Ayres both of Bruno township. They will be married next Friday evening. Miss Ayres is a daughter of F. L Ayres of Indianola and has been teaching at a mission school at Tallequah, I. T. (Walnut Valley Times, June 20, 1902)
