"B" WEDDINGS
A wedding which will be a surprise and of much interest to their many friends was that of Miss Bertha Bartley of Haines' department store, and Floyd Craig, oil driller.
The young couple had been engaged for some time but had been postponing the wedding owing to the fact that Mr. Craig is in the draft. However, while at lunch yesterday they suddenly decided to be married at once, and followed up that decision by going to the courthouse at one o'clock, where they were married by Probate Judge Mooney.
Mr. and Mrs. Craig expect to make their home in El Dorado. Their many friends join in wishing them happiness and prosperity. (Walnut Valley Times - Daily - March 1, 1918 )
MANY SHARE PLEASURE OF GOLDEN YEAR EVENT WITH THE AL BECKERS
Mr. and Mrs. Al J. Becker of 904 South Denver, residents here for many years, received the congratulations of a large number of relatives and friends on Sunday afternoon when they observed their golden wedding anniversary with an informal reception at the First Christian church.
Receiving the guests in the fellowship hall were Mr. and Mrs. T. G. (Betty) Bush, son in law and daughter of the honorees; their daughters, Barbara and Lisa, all of Wichita, and their son, Larry Bush, a student at KSU, who came from Manhatten for the event.
The Beckers' son and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Becker, and sons, George and Ralph, and daughter Elizabeth, who reside at Corpus Christi, Texas, were unable to be here for the occasion.
The Rev. Ivan Hansen, minister, read the scriptures and offered an invocatory prayer.
A most delightful feature of the afternoon was the appearance of Mrs. Russell Becker of Chicago, the wife of Mr. Becker's nephew, who sang "Bless This House," "The Little Brown Owl," "Song of Love" and "Percipiency," with Mrs. Jack Gordon of El Dorado as piano accompanist. A gifted vocalist, Mrs. Becker has sung with the Chicago Civic Opera company and her talents are widely recognized.
Many congratulatory bouquets, potted flowers and floral arrangements, and other gifts attesting affection and good will were in abundant evidence. The gift table, covered in white lace was underlaid with gold, as was the hospitality table.
Gold tapers in crystal candle holders were used at each side of the handsome three-tier wedding cake, which was decorated in gold and crested with white and gold sugar bells tied with tulle. Other refreshments also emphasized the anniversary theme.
Presiding at the tea and coffee services were two sisters of Mrs. Becker's - Mrs. Ruth McMillen of Garden Grove, Calif., and Mrs. Myrtle Perkins of Salina.
Mrs. Becker wore an afternoon dress of chiffon for the occasion, and at her shoulder was a white orchid corsage, a gift of her grandchildren. Mr. Becker's boutonniere was a gold chrysanthemum.
Gold chrysanthemums also formed the corsages of attendants at the reception.
Mrs. Becker was especially delighted at the presence of her two sisters - Mrs. McMillen and Mrs. Perkins - and their two brothers, Harry Etherington of Temple City, Calif., and Roy Etherington of Kilgore, Texas.
Other relatives and close friends here from a distance for the observance were Russell Becker of Chicago, Warren Becker of Topeka, Cecil Atwood and E. J. McCallister of Bartlesville, Okla.; Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Allen of Winfield, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Becker of Tulsa, and Mrs. Lillie Fisher and Arthur Thompson, both of Okmulgee, Okla.
