CANNON, FRANK

Frank Cannon, 48 year old Rosalia farmer, was accidentally killed this morning when a 12-gauge automatic shotgun which he was carrying was discharged, the shot entering his forehead.

The tragedy occurred shortly before 9 o'clock at his farm home, three miles west and five and a half miles north of Rosalia.

The full charge of the blast entered Mr. Cannon's head and death was instantaneous.

According to Mrs. Cannon, her husband left the house about 8:30 with the remark that he intended to shoot a chicken hawk which he had seen flying about.

Shortly afterward she heard a shot and went out to learn if her husband had killed the hawk. Instead, she found his body lying across an automobile tire in the driveway leading to the barn.

She immediately rushed across the road to the home of Robert Grant and he notified county officers of the tragedy.

Deputy Sheriffs Roy Enright and W. P. Dunagan and Miss Lu Rodgers, justice of the peace, went to the scene and following an investigation, it was the consensus of opinion that Mr. Cannon's death was accidental. Miss Rodgers was acting for County Coroner A. P. Cloyes who is out of town.

The possibility of suicide was eliminated because of the fact that no powder burns were found on the victim's forehead which probably would have been the case had he attempted to kill himself.

It is probable, the officers stated, that the Rosalia man was holding the shotgun by the barrel when it was discharged. That the trigger caught on some object or the stock was jarred in such a manner as to cause the weapon to fire, is possible, they said.

The body was brought to the Byrd Funeral Home where funeral arrangements will be announced probably tomorrow.

Mr. Cannon had resided in the Rosalia Community all his life with the exception of 12 years spent at Matfield Green and he was well known in that neighborhood.

He was born at Rosalia on February 11, 1890, and was married at Cottonwood Falls on February 11, 1913.

Surviving are: his widow; two daughters, Helen and Vivian Jane; two sons, Clifford of Tilden, Texas, and Harry, of Eureka; his mother, Mrs. Maria Cannon, of Rosalia, four sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Larson of El Dorado, Mrs. Charles Correll and Mrs. Tot Newby, both of Rosalia, and Mrs. Laura Madison, of Emporia and three brothers, William and Leslie of Rosalia, and Harry Cannon of El Dorado.
