He was a man of singular and exceptional intelligence. Born in Falun, Sweden, he came to this country at the age of 18. Throughout his long life of 77 years, he added to his store of knowledge by intensive reading. He was an avid student of history and economics and a capacious memory enabled him to possess a great store of facts and figures at his fingertips. He forgot nothing. Probably no better informed a student of human affairs has every lived in this town.
Mr. Engberg was of sturdy build, energetic in all ways and widely known as a gentleman of the old school. He made, and kept friends everywhere. His precise speech and courtly manners dignified him as a prime figure among all classes of friends and acquaintances. He was blessed with good health and suffered no chronic ailments. He was loyal to his company as an active railroader always giving more than was expected of him in the line of duty. He reared a fine family of sons and daughters and bestowed upon all his intimates a full measure of devotion. He had been baptized into the Lutheran faith and kept his membership in the church in the town of his birth. While he attended the Christian Church here, he exemplified the wholesome doctrine of the Golden Rule in all his acts.
Mr. Engberg, in his long and useful career, was another of Swedish birth and descent who made a striking contribution to the lustrous eminence of the Kansas people. (El Dorado Times, Oct. 30, 1964)
