ALLEY, CLAUDE MARION

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Derby Church of Christ for Claude Marion Alley, 89, of Douglass, who died Wednesday at the Green Meadows nursing home at Haysville. Interment will be in the Richland cemetery at Douglass.

Claude Marion Alley was born Feb. 14, 1883 in Carrol County, Ark., and came to Kansas in 1900. He had lived in the Butler and Sedgwick county areas since coming to this state.

He was married to Zoe Ohmstead on Dec. 24, 1905. She preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1968. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Vera Osterhaus on Oct. 29, 1965.

Survivors include a son, James D. Alley of Derby; a daughter, Mrs. Freida Stiles of Whittier, N. C., and three brothers, Dr. James M. Alley of Augusta, John Alley of Douglass and William Alley of Derby; two sisters, Miss Lydia Alley and Mrs. Ethel Paul both of Wichita as well as two nephews, Mark and Marion Alley, both of Augusta.

A memorial has been established with the Maude Carpenter Children's Home at Wichita. (El Dorado Times, June 18, 1973)

BROWN, RAYMOND ALBERT

Raymond Albert Brown, 70, of Lyman, Wyo., died Monday at Ogden, Utah hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mountain View, Wyo., Presbyterian Church with burial at Fort Bridger, Wyo.

Mr. Brown was born Mar. 5, 1906, near Leon.

Survivors are his wife, Linda, of the home, four sons, the Rev. Charles Brown of Walker, Mo., Jim Brown of Nevada, Mo., Gene Brown of Mountain View and Duane Brown of Salt Lake City, a daughter, Joye Brown of Gallatin Gateway, Mont., a brother, Allen Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo., three sisters, Nellie Wojciechowski of Buffalo, N.Y., Grace Pumphrey of Denver, Colo., and Louise Cortner of Wichita, two half-brothers, Joe Myers of Cassoday and Harold Myers of Dallas, Tex., 11 grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren, an aunt Mrs. Ida Parks, 131 North Star and an uncle Arthur Brown of Leon. CHRISTLIEB, ALICE

Alice Christlieb, 70, Park City, mother of Roberta Guthrie of Augusta, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006.

Funeral service was held this morning Jan. 16.

Other survivors include: sons, Ronald of Meriden and Douglas of Linchburg, Mo., daughters Lila and Ginny Shea of Park City, Lydia Swanson of Goessel, Penny Smithhart of Whitewater, and Peggy Roets of Valley Center. Sisters, Iva Simmons of Independence, Freda Winkleman of Cherryvale and Phyllis Nolan of Whitewater, brothers, Lan Lindsay of Okla., and Jay Lindsey of Mo., 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren.

CORNWELL, PAUL LEONARD

Paul Leonard Cornwell, who died January 4 at his home, Cassoday, route one, was born July 24, 1895 in Sumner county and had spent most of his life in the Cassoday area. His parents were William and Stella (Hackney) Cornwell. His marriage to Alta Cooper took place March 1, 1923 in El Dorado.

Prior to retirement he was employed by Chelsea township and also engaged in farming. He was a member of the Durachen school board of education for many years.

Surviving are Mrs. Cornwell one sister and three brothers, Mrs. Agnes Manka, El Dorado, route three, Wesley Cornwell, Cottonwood, Ariz., Ralph Cornwell, Harrison, Ark., and Bryan Cornwell of Lyndon.

Services were held Wednesday in the Cassoday United Methodist church, the Rev. John Peacock of Cheney officiating. Mrs. Harmon Lackey was the organ accompanist for Chad Patton who sang "God Be With You," and "Well Never Say Goodby." The casket bearers were Wayne Cornwell, Harold Cornwell, Max Barclay, Harry Unruh, Paul Cooper and John Cooper. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery at Elbing. The Kirby Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. (El Dorado Times, January 8, 1970)

DANIEL, BESS HARDY (MRS. J. C.)

Mrs. J. C. Daniel (Bess Hardy) of Seattle, Wash., a former El Doradoan, died Thursday in a Seattle hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services and burial will take place Monday at Seattle.

She is survived by her husband - widely known as "Slim" who was employed in the post office here before the couple moved to Seattle in 1941.

Mrs. F. M. Johnson of 938 West Third, is a niece of Mr. Daniel. (El Dorado Times, November 2, 1973)

DAY, JOSEPHINE (MRS. GUY)

Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the Dietz Colonial Chapel at El Dorado for Mrs. Guy (Josephine) Day, 78, who died Thursday at the Allen Memorial hospital at El Dorado. Rosary will be said at the Chapel at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

She was born in rural Potwin on Dec. 16, 1894, the daughter of Thomas David and Eliza (Beard) Edwards. She was married to Guy Day. He preceded her in death in 1967.

She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Tom E. Day, of El Dorado and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Guthrie, formerly of Leon and now residing at the Mid American Nursing Center at El Dorado. (El Dorado Times, no date given)

DUNMIRE, MARGARET (MRS. WILLIAM A.)

Mrs. William A. (Margaret) Dunmire, 46, Wichita, died Tuesday. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church.

Survivors are her husband and three sons, Randolf, William and Timothy, and two daughters, Rose and Colleen, all of the home, another daughter, Mrs. Denise Auer of Wichita; three brothers, John and Gilbert Sigg, both of Wichita, and Bud Sigg of Aurora, Colo., seven sisters, Mrs. Benny Hoppes, Mrs. Letty Masterson and Sister Anna Mary all of Wichita, Mrs. Reo Griffith of Klamath Falls, Ore., Mrs. Rita McClain of Conway Springs, Mrs. Jane Roberts of Cassoday and Mrs. Treasa Nelson of Arizona. FARMER, STELLA G.

Graveside services were conducted September 15 in Wichita Park Cemetery for Mrs. Stella G. Farmer, 84, of Jacksonville, Florida, who died Saturday, September 12.

She was born in Keighley and lived for many years in Wichita before moving to Jacksonville. The late Mr. Farmer at one time taught music in the Leon schools.

Mrs. Farmer is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gretta Keene of Jacksonville. (El Dorado Times, September 24, 1970)

FLICK, ELWOOD

Elwood Flick, 78, Wichita, formerly of Cassoday, died Tuesday of emphysema. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Charles H. Flick, of El Dorado.

Services were scheduled for 10:45 a.m. today at the Old Nation Mausoleum, Wichita.

He is survived by a niece, Clara Bramer, of Shelton, Wash., and her two children. (Augusta Gazette, May 3, 1976)

GREENLEAF, HAZEL WISE

Hazel Wise Greenleaf died in the hospital in Winfield on Friday, December 22. She was born in Douglass and lived in the house her father built at 705 South Walnut. Hazel's parents were Frederick and Persis Olmstead Wise.

Mrs. Greenleaf was the last grandchild in this area, of Joshua and Mary Walker of Olmstead. The Olmsteads settled south of Douglass in 1869 and Joshua built a dam and grist mill in 1873.

Frederick Wise's brother Solomon married Persis sister, Laura Olmstead. There were thirteen Olmstead brothers and sisters. Many descendants live in this community.

Frederick was a veteran of the Civil War. He was injured in the army when a horse fell on him. While in Washington, D. C. getting a discharge because of his injuries, he attended Ford's theater, the night President Lincoln was shot.

A painting by Hazel Wise Greenleaf hangs in the Douglass Museum. It is a picture of her grandfather, Joshua Olmstead's grist mill. Hazel had aspirations to go on the stage. For a time she studied elocution. Maude Cooley was her teacher.

Hazel married Stanley M. Greenleaf on August 27, 1912. The children of this union are Morton Greenleaf, Texas, John Greenleaf, Winfield and Lois Wilson, Pennsylvania.

Hazel could recall many of the happenings of early days in Douglass.

Funeral services were held in Winfield Tuesday, December 26, at 2:00 in the afternoon.

JOHNSON, HEATHER JANICE

Graveside services for Heather Janice Johnson, who died June 11 at Wesley Medical Center at Wichita, were held Tuesday at the Cassoday Cemetery. She was the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Johnson of Cassoday.

Kirby Funeral Home, El Dorado, was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her parents of the home, the paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Donald Johnson of Cassoday, the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Finey of El Dorado, two paternal great-grandmothers, Mrs. Fern Merwin of Towanda, and Mrs. Afton Johnson of El Dorado and three maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Williams of Routw 2, EL Dorado and Mrs. Lee Carrol of Wichita. KNOX, ALICE ADAMS

Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Adams Knox, 68, of Beaumont will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Kirby Funeral Home at El Dorado. Mrs. Knox died Sunday.

Survivors are the widower, John Knox, daughter, Mrs. Ralph Prewitt of Cassoday and brothers, Roy Adams of Independence and Wesley Adams of Tempe, Arizona. (Augusta Gazette, May 3, 1976)

KOEHN, HOWARD RAY

Howard Ray Koehn, 80, of Burns, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Eden Mennonite Church near Burns. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Howard was born Dec. 31, 1925 in Burrton the son of Aaron and Helen (Schmidt) Koehn. He married Violet Becker on March 9, 1947 in Halstead. He had lived in Butler County since 1951. He was a carpenter and farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Violet of the home, sons, Orvin and Arlo Koehn, both of Burns, daughters, Janice Schmidt of Burns and Karen Smith of Dalhart, Texas, sisters, Pearl Koehn, Lobelville, Tenn., and Lorraine"Koni" Giesbrecht of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

MARTIN, ROBERT

Funeral services were held Friday, December 29, for Robert Martin, 75, in Vacaville, California. He died Wednesday, December 27th, after a week long illness. Interment with military honors was at Vacaville Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Katherine and two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Chestnut and Mrs. Phyllis Birkle of Facaville, two sons; Leo of Everett, Washington and Bill of Ft. Collins, Colorado. One brother, Henry, survives him.

Robert Arlein Martin was born at Three Springs, Kentucky on July 16, 1897. He served in World War I. On April 12, 1919, he was married to Katherine A. Wisely in Hugo, Oklahoma. The Martins lived in a number of places, including at one time Douglass. Martin had been retired before his death from the Santa Fe Railroad. (El Dorado Times, January 11, 1973)

MASON, AMY JOLEN

Graveside services for Amy Jolen Mason, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Mason of 918 Skelly, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.

The child, born Monday at Allen Memorial Hospital, died there this morning.

She is survived by her parents, two sisters, Lynda and Jill Mason, of the home; one brother, Dan Mason also of the home, her paternal grandfather, W. C. Mason of El Dorado and her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Garman of El Dorado.

McMURRAY, ZELLA J.

Mrs. Zella J. McMurray, 76, a former resident of Cassoday and of Newton, died this past Saturday at Bartlesville, Okla.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday at Bartlesville with burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. The Rev. Louis Dale, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church at Newton, officiated.

Mrs. McMurray was born at Shenadoah, Iowa, on March, 20, 1893. She was married to the late Glenn McMurray at Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 29, 1913. She lived at Newton, most of her life.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Paul Warner of Bartlesville, a son Loren W. McMurray of Northville, Mich., five sisters, Mrs. Donna Wagner of Matfield Green, Mrs. Harper Baughman of Ponca City, Okla, Mrs. Mary Ann Dudley of Buena Vista, Colo., Mrs. John Krebs of Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Vonnie Tudor of Newton; and three brothers, Frank B. Plummer of Newton, Forrest Plummer of Cassoday and Virgil Plummer of Hutchinson. There are five grandchildren.

Mrs. McMurray was preceded in death by her husband. He died in 1955. (El Dorado Times, January 24, 1970)

MICHAEL, CARL

Carl Michael, 63, of Tulsa, Okla, a former El Doradoan who resided here for over 50 years, died Wednesday after an illness of several months.

While in El Dorado, Mr. Michael worked for the Truman-Smith and Ray L. Smith construction companies as a master mechanic. He moved to Tulsa four years ago and retired from construction work in 1968.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home chapel in Tulsa.

Born in 1905 at Muncie, Ind., he was married to Catherine Michael. In 1966 at York, Neb., He was a member of the First Christian Church in El Dorado.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine, one brother, Darrel Michael of Wichita, three sisters, Dorothy Hemphill of Larned, Frosie Bass of Meadows, Idaho, and Frances Hazen of El Dorado, Route 2, two nephews Claire Brown of Augusta, Mike Hazen of Wichita and two nieces Shirley Hazen of Wichita and Joyce Mattox of El Dorado. MURRAY, MRS. ALVIN W.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alvin W. Murray wife of Rev. Alvin W. Murray, who died here suddenly early yesterday after an illness of a few days will be held at the Methodist Church tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. The casket will be open to friends from 9 o'clock until the time of services. The body will be taken to Winfield by the Byrd Funeral Home where interment will be made in Highland Cemetery. Graveside services will be conducted there at 2:15 o'clock. (The El Dorado Times, February 11, 1943)

MURRAY, MRS. JULIUS

Mrs. Julius Murray, 57, of Houston, Texas, a former El Doradoan died thi smorning in a Houston hospital following surgery Tuesday.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at St. Martin's church of Houston, under direction of the George H. Lewis mortuary.

Mrs. Murray was the younger daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. G. C. Hall residents here in the 1920's and 30's. Dr. Hall was a specialist in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat.

She was graduated from El Dorado High School in 1930 and attended Kansas university where she was an affiliate of Phi Beta Phi.

Survivors include her husband of the home, at 7211 Tickner, Houston, one son, Robert H. Murray and one sister, Mrs. George (Dorothy) Ramsey of Oklahoma City, Okla. (El Dorado Times, May 24, 1976)

NEUBECKER, LEONA BLANCHE (CONDON)

Leon Blanche (Condon) Neubecker, 79, a retired telephone operator of Grenola, died Tuesday, November 13, 1990. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Survivors include husband, Dale, daughters, Glenda Long of Hamilton, Helen Williams of Douglass, stepson C. E. of Overland Park, brother Ike Condon of Douglass, sisters Meda Felter of Eureka, Mabel Brown of Wichita, Edna Mitchell of Douglass, 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.

NEWBURY, LELAND

Leland Newbury, 99, died Saturday morning, September 8, 1990 at Hemet Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Services, Wednesday, September 12 at the Miller Jones Hemet Valley Chapel, with burial following at Riverside National Cemetery. The Rev. Donald Jentes will officiate.

Mr. Newbury was born August 11, 1891 at Bainard, near Whitewater, son of Daniel Steven and Martha Lewis Newbury.

He married Flossie Edith Lewis, sister of Otis B. Lewis of El Dorado, December 20, 1920.

He was a World War I Veteran and he was a lease foreman of Texas Gulf Producing Company.

He was a member of the Community Baptist Church of Paramont, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, one son Wilfred Newbury, one sister, Lydia (Mrs. Otis B.) Lewis of El Dorado, one grandson, many nieces and nephews. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 10, 1990)

NEWFER, HOLLY ANN GRAHAM

Holly Ann Graham Newfer was stillborn Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1900 at HCA Wesley Medical Center.

She was the daughter of Lynn Graham and Mike Newfer.

Service is 2 p.m. Monday at the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Memorial has been established with the nursey at the Federated Church at Whitewater.

She is survived by two stepsisters April and Breanna Newfer both of Seattle, Wash., grandparents, Bill and Wanda Graham rural Whitewater and Alvin and Laverne Newfer of Clementh.

NICKERN, ZONA GAY (MRS. HENRY)

Zona Gay (Mrs. Henry) Nickern, 72, of Arkansas City, retired music teacher and owner of A. C. Music Studio, died Saturday. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Erdman-Oldroyd Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Survivors are two brothers, Troy Mulkey of Cassoday and Jim Mulkey of Pasadena, Tex., and a sister, Allen Langford, of Coral Gables, Fla. (El Dorado Times, May 31, 1976)

PANKRATZ, GERHARD G.

Gerhard G. Pankratz, 95, died Sunday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton. He was the father of Theodore J. Pankratz, Cassoday and Gus A. Pankratz, Augusta.

He was born in Marion County and later went to Whitewater where he lived until 1938 when he moved to Newton. He was a farmer and carpenter.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Mennonite Church, Newton. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton. Draper-Cannon Funeral Home is in charge. (El Dorado Times, July 14, 1975)

PARKER, LEWIS PEARL

Lewis Pearl Parker aged 65 years and a resident of this community for almost 60 years died here late yesterday after an illness of two weeks. He was a farmer and stockman served as trustee of Prospect Township for 15 years, and was a staunch Democrat taking an active part in all political affairs of his community. He also served almost continuously for a period of 30 years as a member of the Prospect School Board which place he held at the time of his death.

Mr. Parker was born February 5, 1878 at DeWitt, Ill. He came with his parents to Kansas on March 6, 1884 and had lived on the same farm located in Prospect Township ever since. He never married. Three sisters, Mrs. Nora Barrett Mrs. Alice Kimball and Mrs. Susie Lewellen all of El Dorado, one niece and three nephews survive him. A nephew Wilbur Clayton Barrett was lost during the Pearl Harbor attack when he was stationed on the S. S. Oklahoma, which was sunk by the Japs. Mr. Parker was a member of the M. W. A.

Services will be conducted at the Byrd Funeral Home, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Belle Vista Cemetey. (The El Dorado Times, February 11, 1943)

PIERCE, ONA BELL CAMP

Mrs. Ona Bell Camp Pierce, 20 years old, wife of Clarence Pierce died at their home in Fairview Township Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after a three weeks illness. Surviving besides her husband, are her parents Mr.and Mrs. Martin Camp; four sisters, Mrs. Rose Ellis, Mrs. Nellie Sparks, and Misses Lucy and Evelyn Camp and two brothers, Carl and James Monroe Camp.

The funeral will be held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock; burial in the Towanda Cemetery. (Walnut Valley Times, November 21, 1924)

PLUMMER, FRANK B.

Frank B. Plummer, 80, of Newton, a retired employee of Central Securities, Inc., died Sunday. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Draper-Cannon Funeral Home, Newton.

Survivors are his wife, Maybelle of the home, two brothers, Forrest of Cassoday and Virgil of Hutchinson, four sisters, Mrs. Vonnie Tudor of Newton, Mrs. Dora Baughman of Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. Ann Dudley of Buena Vista, Colo., and Mrs. Donna Wagner of Matfield Green. RHOADES, MAUD ORA


Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Sears attended funeral services in Odessa, Texas Wednesday for Mrs. Maud Ora Rhoades, 73, who died Monday, November 2, 1970 at 2:00 p.m. in the hospital there. She had suffered a series of severe heart attacks, beginning three weeks before. She was the mother of Mrs. Sears.

Surviving in addition to Barbara, is another daughter, Betty (H. A. Tomlinson) of California, four grandchildren, Jerry Sears of Las Vegas, Nevada, Bruce Sears of Leon, Pamela and Danny White both of California; and two great grandchildren, Felicia and Shawn Sears of Las Vegas.

Mrs. Rhoades was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Milton Rhoades and by a son, Jack. (El Dorado Times, November 5, 1970)

ROSE, EDNA WILLINE

Mrs.Edna Willine Rose, who died May 19 at her home, Lyndon route one, succumbing to a lengthy illness, was the mother of Mrs. Ted Wischropp (Kathryn) 320 Hillside, El Dorado.

Mrs. Rose was born February 2, 1914, at Pomona. She was a member of the United Methodist church as Vassar.

Also surviving are her husband, Orville, four other daughters and two sons, Mrs. Patricia Burkdoll of Quenemo, Mrs. Helen Nordling, Osage City, Jolinda, Lois Ann, Larry and Don Rose, all of the home, three sisters and seven grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday in the Vassar United Methodist church and interment was in Woodland Cemetery at Pomona. A memorial has been established in Mrs. Rose's name with the American Cancer Society. (The El Dorado Times, May 22, 1969)

ROTH, LOISA M.


Mrs. Loisa M. Roth, age 80 years, died December 15, 1972 at the Colonial Manor in Douglass, Kansas.

The daughter of Timothy and Mary Blubaugh Sapp was born January 29, 1892 at Douglass, Kansas. She was life time resident of this community.

She was preceded in death by her husband B. R. Roth, March 28, 1968, her parents, her sister, Cecelia Kuntz, two brothers, Demetrius Sapp and Arecia Sapp.

She is survived by one sister: Mrs. Agnes C. Schoonover.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 o'clock p.m. December 18, at St. James Catholic Church, Augusta, Kansas.

Father Riley officiated. Bearers were Arthur Johnston, John Johnston, David Johnston, Raymond Kuntz, Edward Kuntz and Frank Kuntz.

Interment was in the Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard Funeral Home in charge. (El Dorado Times, December 21, 1972)

SHAFER, BERTHA ELLEN

Bertha Ellen Shafer, 82 607 South Summit died Friday at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in the Kirby Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow in Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Shafer was born Oct. 8, 1891 in Effingham, Ill. She married James Lloyd Shafer July 5, 1916, in Iola, Kansas. She has lived in the El Dorado area since 1946 coming here from Milo, Mo. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, J. L. of the home, four daughters, Mrs. Ray (Francis) Farthing, 1231 South Shelden, Mrs. Eliza (Opal) Smith, Neveda, Mo., Mrs. Bill (Jessie) McCartney, 315 Random Road, Mrs. Norman (Ingaby) Kelly, Wichita, four songs, Glen Shafer, Kansas City, Mo., Joe Shafer, 1902 South Emporia, Wayne Shafer, Oklahoma City, Denzle Shafer, Ardmore, Okla, four sisters, Mrs. Susie Dublin, Mrs. Flossie Collins, Mrs. Edith Gohedy, Mrs. Ruby Utter, one brother, Joe Ritchey, all of New York, 29 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Shafer was preceded in death by one daughter, three sons, three sisters and four brothers.

SPIRES, RAYMOND CHARLES JR.

Raymond Charles Spires Jr., 81, Augusta, retired Santa Fe Railroad foreman, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2006.

Funeral service was held this afternoon at Hillside Funeral Chapel in Augusta.

His survivors include sons, Rick and David, both of Augusta, Mike of Douglass, brothers, Leon and Charley, both of El Dorado, sisters, Delores Walker of Benton and Pat Shields of Fall River, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.

STRAIT, PERRY

Perry Strait, 80, of 310 North Taylor, retired farmer and stockman died early today at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Kirby Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. C. M. Nutter, staff members of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Quito cemetery with Masonic rites.

A lifelong resident of Butler county, Mr. Strait was born in Chelsea township on Feb. 14, 1886. He lived in the Leon community in Little Walnut township from 1909 to 1961, moving to El Dorado five years ago.

He served on the Quito school board for about 30 years, was a member of the board of directors of the REA for 20 years and was a member of the Kansas Electric Co-op. Mr. Strait held membership in the Leon Masonic Lodge of which he was a past master in the Leon Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and in the Leon Methodist Church.

He was married to Fanny Dixon at Leon on April 5, 1908. She died in 1929. On Dec. 20, 1948, he was married to Iola Evans at Newton.

Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Frances Brown, Wichita and Mrs. Joan Stroda, Hope; one son, Frank Strait, 301 South Star, two stepsons Mervin Evans, 749 Charron Drive and Berl Evans, 301 Eunice a half brother, Ralph Potter, Fullerton, Calif., and nine grandchildren.

Last rites for Perry Strait, 80, of 310 North Taylor, retired farmer and stockman whose death occurred early Wednesday, were conducted Friday afternoon in the Kirby Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. C. M. Nutter of the First Methodist Church.

Serving as casket bearers were Sidney Blakeman, Willard Morgan, Clifford Angleton, Junior Singleton, James R. Knox and Wayne Seward.

Members of the Joppa Lodge No. 223, A. F. & A. M. of Leon, attended as a group and also conducted Masonic rites at the graveside with Arley M. Kistler as orator.

SUTTON, JOHN A.

Funeral services for John A. Sutton, 63, of Newport, Ore., were Thursday, March 21, at the Bateman Funeral Chapel Newport.

Sutton formerly lived in El Dorado. He graduated from El Dorado High School in 1929 and was on the relay team that won the National Mile Relay Race in Chicago, Ill. He was also a newspaper carrier for the El Dorado Times.

Sutton was born in Washington, Penn., Dec. 17, 1910 and he died March 19 at Good Samaritan hospital, Corvallis, Ore., after being in poor health for some time.

He had lived in Newport for the past 15 years and owned and operated the Willers Motel. He was a former Port of Newport commissioner and Newport City councilman and was a past president of the Newport Chamber of Commerce.

He was one of the organizers of the sports car races which were at the Newport Airport in the late 1960's. He also was instrumental in the organization of the Loyalty Day festival.

Survivors include his widow, Anna, a daughter, Mrs. JoAnn Olson of Portland and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Dixon of San Leandro, Calif., and Mrs. Rosey Brentlinger of Castro Valley, Calif. (El Dorado Times, April 5, 1974)

SWINSON, SUSAN (MRS. JAMES)

Mrs. James (Susan) Swinson, 65, of Winfield, sister of Mrs. Ruth Olinger, of El Dorado, died Saturday. She was a former resident of Wichita.

Other survivors are a son, Bud Swinson, Tulsa, Okla., a brother, Jim Bailey, Greensburg, and another sister, Mrs. Bertha Shrigley, Columbus, Ohio.

WADDELL, EARL A.

Earl A. Waddell, 61, of Madison and the father of an El Dorado woman, died Saturday at Topeka.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Madison Christian church, with burial in the Hamilton Cemetery.

Mr. Waddell, an oil field worker most of his life, was employed as a custodian for an Emporia concern. He had lived in Greenwood county since 1916, coming from Missouri. He was born at Purcell, Mo., on June 25, 1929.

Mr. Waddell was a member of the Christian Church.

Surviving are his wife a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Ott, 341 Simpson road; a son, Gerald E. Waddell of Emporia, his stepfather, Ross Breitkreutz of Madison, a brother, John F. Waddell of Emporia and a sister, Mrs. John Gibson of Kansas City, Mo.

There are five grandchildren.

WAKEFIELD, MANLEY V. (PENNY)

Masonic funeral services were held Monday, November 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the Latham United Methodist Church for Manley V. (Penny) Wakefield, 63, who died in his home in Latham, Friday morning, November 14, 1975. The Rev. Art Wilson of Leon officiated. Mrs. Charles Craig and Mrs. Harold Schouten sang "Whispering Hope," and "I Need Thee Every Hour," accompanied by Mrs. Ralph Hearne.

Casket bearers were Masonic brothers, Dean Gilbert, Ralph Hearne, E. G. Craft, James Brewer, John Brewer, and Jack Brewer. Burial was in Latham Cemetery with graveside Masonic rites conducted. Miles Mortuary of Burden was in charge of arrangements.

The following poem written by Penny's granddaughter, Julie A. Wakefield wsa read at the funeral services.

Do not grieve for me
As I am not sick and never will be
I am free to do what I please now,
And will never be confined again.

Remember the happy times you had with me,

Mr. Wakefield had been in failing health for many years. He was born December 28, 1911, near Atlanta, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett (Maggie) Wakefield. He married Bernice Matthews June 6, 1935 in Winfield.

A retired farmer, Penny was a member of the Latham Masonic Lodge No. 401, the Order of the Eastern Star, No. 449, and the Latham Lion's Club. He had resided in the Latham community for over 40 years.

Mr. Wakefield is survived by his wife, Bernice, a son, Dale and daughter in law Kay of Metairie, Louisiana; two granddaughters, Julie and Traci Wakefield of Winfield, two brothers, Carl Wakefield of Atlanta and Charles Wakefield of Augusta and one sister Mrs. Audine Groom of Rock.

A memorial was established with the American Cross Society. Contributions may be left at Miles Mortuary or with the Atlanta State Bank. (The Leon News, November 13, 1975)

WALTER, WILLIAM J.

Funeral services for William J. Walter, 66 of Pontiac, Mich., a former resident of Burns, who died May 17, were conducted Tuesday at the Coats Funeral Home in Drayton Plains, Mich.

Mr. Walter employed as a millwright in a General Motors plant at Pontiac was born at Burns on Aug. 4, 1902. He lived there until young manhood. He had lived in Detroit and Pontiac for about 40 years.

Surviving are his wife, Doris, two daughters, Mrs. Betty Kyle of Peabody and Mrs. Norma Martin of 402 North Star; a son, Harold Walter, of Washington Park, Ill.; four brothers, Roland Walter of 501 South Topeka, Leland Walter of 414 South Star, and Eugene Walter of Wichita and Raymond Walter of Russell; and by a sister Elizabeth Thomas of Albuquerque, N.M.

Mr. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and by a daughter.

WARREN, ELSIE E.

Elsie E. Warren, 76, of El Dorado, died early Tuesday morning, April 14, 1992 at HCA Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 26, 1915, in Summerville, Mo., to James Thomas and Margaret Moore Wright. She grew up in Columbus and moved to El Dorado area in 1937. She was a homemaker and had worked in restaurants and as a private duty nurse. She attended the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church.

Survivors include a son, James A. Warren, of El Dorado, daughter Vivian Posey of El Dorado, brother, Roy Wright, Commerce, Okla., sisters, Ella Vanderford of Coffeyville, Emma Coble of Greenville, Texas, Dolly Garland of Stockton, Calif., several grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Billy Wright and three brothers.

WARREN, NELLIE G.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, at the Leon United Methodist Church for Mrs. Nellie G. Warren, 97, of Ellsworth. Burial was in the Leon cemetery.

Mrs. Warren the former Nellie Woodward was born October 5, 1873 in Chelsea, Kansas. She married John Warren of Leon in 1889. For awhile they operated a restaurant in Leon. Her church participation was in the Leon Christian Church. Most of their married life was spent in Aransas Pass, Texas. Mr. Warren died in March of 1937. In 1955 Mrs. Warren moved to Ellsworth to be near her brother, Clarence Woodward, who has given her loving care.

Besides her brother, she is survived by 4 nephews, one niece and many great-nieces and nephews. (El Dorado Times, October 22, 1970)

Mrs. America H. Watkins, 75, of Kansas City, Mo., a former Augustan, died Wednesday in Kansas City.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel at Augusta with burial in the Elmwood Cemetery at Augusta.

Mrs. Watkins was born Sept. 28, 1902, in Estill County, Kentucky, the daughter of Harry C. and Sarah Howell Scrivner.

She was a retired saleslady with the Macy's Country Club Plaza store in Kansas City.

WEST, FRANK

Funeral services for Frank West, 82, of El Dorado Route 3, a retired employee of the Army Corps of Engineers, who died Thursday at Allen Memorial Hospital will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial chapel.

Mr. West had been in failing health for several years and was ill for two weeks. He lived at Augusta a short time prior to moving to El Dorado and at Cadiz, Ky., before that. He retired 20 years ago.

He was born in Sumner County, Tenn., on Nov. 23, 1886 and was married to Mae Smith in Tennessee. She died in 1925. Mr. West was a member of the United Methodist church at Cadiz, Ky.

Surviving are a son, Frank West Jr., of Prescott, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Bunnie Thurman of Cadiz, Ky., and Mrs. Betty Schwab of Idaho, a granddaughter with whom he lived, Mrs. Robert W. Thomas Jr., of rural El Dorado; 12 other grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

Two brothers also preceded Mr West in death.

The Rev. C. M. Nutter, staff member at the First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Blankenship cemetery. (The El Dorado Times, May 3, 1969)

WHEELER, VIRGINIA E.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 8, at the First United Methodist Church for Mrs. George Wheeler (Virginia E.), 61, 1708 Webb. Mrs. Wheeler died April 5 at St. Francis hospital in Wichita.

Rev. C. M. Nutter, visitation pastor, officiated at the service. Mrs. Amos B. Marsh accompanied Mrs. Patrick McFadden who sang "In the Garden" and "Jesus is Coming for Me."

Interment was in Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas. Brothers Bill Hughes officiated at the graveside service Wednesday afternoon April 9.

Casket bearers were Al Resnick, Don Christy, Ralph Reynolds, Harry Smith, Claude Leckington and Charles Nace.

Mrs. Wheeler was born July 28, 1913 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carr (Edith Keller). She married George Wheeler March 6, 1937 in El Dorado. She had been an El Dorado Residence since June 1953, coming here from Gridley.

A member of the United Methodist church, Mrs. Wheeler also held memberships in the Andrina Chapter #93, OES Queen Esther Shrine #10, White Shrine of Jersusalem and her church circle.

In addition to her husband Mrs. Wheeler is survived by one son, Ron, Sun Valley, Calif., one daughter, Mrs. Treva Brodersen, Wichita, two sisters, Mrs. Melba Thornton, Russellville, Ark. And Mrs. Dorothy Stevenson, Kansas City, and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. (Butler County News, April 10, 1975)

WHITE, HARRY L.

Harry L. White, 83, a former resident of El Dorado died Saturday afternoon at the Anderson hospital in Garnett, Kan.

Mr. White had been a resident of Garnett for 10 years, moving there after having lived in El Dorado for 20 years. He came to El Dorado from Beaumont.

Mr. White was born Feb. 14, 1882 and was married in 1903. His wife, Cora White survives.

He was employed by the City of El Dorado and was a member of the Salvation Army church.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Jim Miller, Garnett, Mrs. Roberts Bradford, Valley Center and Mrs. Chester Franks, Beaumont, two sons, Sanford White, Emporia and William White, 722 Park and a sister, Mrs. Anna Walker, Oakland, Neb.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Evangelical United Brethren church in Garnett by Rev. Willie Durham, pastor of the church. (El Dorado Times, November 1, 1965)

WHITSON, JESS G.

Jesse G. Whitson, 86, of Whitewater, a retired farmer and stockman, died Wednesday afternoon at Bethel Deaconess Hospital at Newton.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Palmyra Baptist Church at Benton with burial in the Union Cemetery at Benton.

Mr. Whitson was born Sept. 29, 1891, at Hutchinson the son of Robert James and Betsy Ann Phares Whitson. He married Alvena Myersich on Mar. 22, 1915 and she died in 1939. He was married Oct. 9, 1947 to Mary Duvanel.

Survivors are his wife of the home; a son, Marvin of Wichita, a daughter Mrs. Inez (Earl) Taylor of Benton, two brothers, Russell C. of Wichita and Clifford of Benton and three grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in his name with the Baptist Foreign Missions. Contributions may be left at the Lamb Mortuary Service at Whitewater, which is in charge of arrangements. (El Dorado Times, October 27, 1977)

WHITT, RAYMOND HAMLITON

Services for Raymond Hamilton Whitt, 1502 Lowe, whose death occurred Friday, August 27, in Allen Memorial Hospital were held Sunday at the Kirby Funeral Home, the Rev. Dr. Joe Riley Burns and the Rev. Ollie Odle officiating. Darryl F. Patten, the soloist, was accompanied by Mrs. W. C. Butterworth at the organ. The honorary casket bearers were Roy A. Phillips Jr., Crayton Gardner, Jack Smedley, Allen Earnshaw, Lynn Bieler, Jim Pipes, Archie Leben, and Charles Pennington. Attending in groups were members of Beta Sigma Phi and the Shrine. Interment was Monday afternoon in Hillcrest Cemetery at Gallatin, Mo.

Mr. Whitt who had been ill since last March was born January 11, 1917 at Gallatin and was married January 1, 1941 at Trenton, Mo. to Mary Elizabeth Trimble. He came here from Marysville, Mo. in 1959 and before he became ill was produce manager at Foodtown. During his residence here he made a great many friends who are grieved by his untimely death.

A veteran of World War Two, Mr. Whitt entered military service June 2, 1941 at Fort Leavenworth and received his honorable discharge March 21, 1946, with the rank of First Lieutenant. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Marysville, the American Legion, Loyal Order of the Moose; Gallatin Lodge No. 106, A. F. & A. M.; Moila Temple, Russell Chapter No. 77, R. A. M. Shrine and Veterans of Foreign Wars Forty and Eight. He was a past president of the Marysville Rotary Club.

Surviving are Mrs. Whitt, his mother, Mrs. Sarah Whitt, of Gallatin, a sister, Mrs. Raymond Wickizer of Jamesport, Mo., and a brother, Perry Whitt, Jr., 1317 Lawndale, El Dorado. A brother, Donald Lee lost his life in World War II. (El Dorado Times, September 2, 1965)

WILCOX, REVELLE E.

Mrs. John (Revelle E.) Wilcox, 58, of 1418 Cave Springs, died Tuesday at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel with burial in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.

Mrs. Wilcox was born Oct. 2, 1919 at Sylvan Grove, the daughter of Herbert and Hazel Lester Blythe. She married John Wilcox on Sept. 15, 1946, at Wichita and the family moved to El Dorado 19 years ago from Salina. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salina.

Survivors include her husband of the home, three daughters Mrs. Debra Berens of El Dorado, Leanne Wilcox of Wichita and Gaye Wilcox of the home, he rmother, Mrs. Hazel Blythe, a brother, Donald Blythe, and a sister Mrs. Arleen Schlappy all of Great Bend and a grandson.

Services for Mrs. John (Revelle) Wilcox 1418 Cave Springs who died Tuesday were held Friday afternoon at the Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel with burial in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.

Casket bearers were Glenn Rohrbaugh, Richard Russum, Lynn Bieler, Clarence LaFevre, Frank Ventress and Bernard Dieker.

WINETEER, RAYMOND

Services were held Wednesday at the Downing Mortuary in Wichita for Raymond Wineteer, Wichita route five, who died suddenly Sunday, April 27 following a heart attack. He was the husband of Edith McCreight Wineteer and a brother-in-law of Stewart McCreight, 115 South Orchard.

WOODS, MYREL WILLIAM

Services for Myrel William Woods, 21, laborer, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Watt Funeral Home, Moline, Kan. He died Saturday of a gunshot wound. The county coroner is investigating the death. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Myrel D. Woods, Grenola, two brothers, Robert D., Arkansas City, Kan., and Walter Gene, at home and four sisters, Mrs. Roberta J. WRIGHT, CHARLES T.

Charles T. Wright, 51, owner of Wright Furniture and Appliance Store at Wichita, died Wednesday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Rindt Memorial Chapel at Arkansas City.

Survivors are his widow, Beverly, formerly of El Dorado, a son Douglas Wright Arkansas City and two half brothers. (El Dorado Times, Oct. 25, 1975)

Charles T. Wright, Wichita, died October 22, at St. Francis hospital after a brief illness. Born February 28, 1924, and reared in Arkansas City he was well known in this area. He was married February 13, 1962 at Wellington to the former Beverly McGaugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle McGaugh, 306 South Washington. Mrs. Wright was reared and attended schools in El Dorado.

They made their home in Wichita where Mr. Wright owned and operated the Wright Furniture and Appliance store. An airplane pilot, he was also a farmer and rancher, and gained considerable recognition among area stockmen for his purebred Herefords which he raised with devoted attention.

Mr. Wright served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a member of the Golden Baptist church in Wichita and Crescent Lodge 151 AF&AM.

In addition to his widow of the home at 2410 South Minneapolis, Wichita, Mr. Wright is survived by a son, Douglas Wright, Arkansas City, two brothers, Fred King, Arkansas City and Earl King, Ocoee, Fla.; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Thomas Wright and Bessie Harnley Wright, and by an infant son, Gregory Thomas Wright.

Services were held Monday afternoon at the Rindt Memorial chapel in Arkansas City with Rev. Anthony Slutz, pastor of the Gideon Baptist Church, Wichita officiating. Interment was at Tannehill cemetery. (Butler County News, October 30, 1975)

WRIGHT, HUGH E.

Hugh E. Wright, 82, of Wichita, retired banker, died Thursday.

Born in Cleveland he spent his boyhood on a farm near Liberty Center, Ohio. In 1907, he moved to Cedar Vale, Kan., where he was associated with the Dosbaugh National Bank. He came to Wichita in 1913 and worked at National Bank of Commerce. He remained there after it united with Kansas National Bank (now First National).

He also was with the Exchange State Bank in Burns, Kan., and Citizens State Bank in Wichita. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Wichita Consistory, Wichita Lodge No. 99 AF & AM and Midian Temple.

Survivors include his widow, Ruth; three brothers, Ray A. and Herbert C., both of El Dorado, Kan., and Ivan W., Liberty Center and a sister, Mrs. George Krohn, Fayette, Ohio.

The Rev. Larry D. Wyant, 45, First Baptist Church associate pastor and former Beech Aircraft Corp., technical editor, died Saturday, July 11, 1992. Service 10 a.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church.

Survivors, wife, Laura L., parents Hobart and Barbara Wyant of Wichita, brother, Mike of Benton, sister, Linda Markley of Augusta; stepsister, Roberta Glenn of Mountainburg, Ark. ZACHMAN, MATTIE (MRS. OSCAR)

Services were held at Ellis for Mrs. Oscar (Mattie) Zachman, 45, a teacher, who died Saturday. She was a sister of Mrs. Wilma Streiner of Cassoday.

Other survivors are her widower, a son and a daughter, both of the home, her mother, Mrs. Martha Chapman of Gove, three brothers and two other sisters. (El Dorado Times, July 24, 1975)

Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. Wilson, Sr. Observe Golden Anniversary with Open House December 2

Children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. Wilson, Sr., honored their parents on their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, December 2, with an open house at the Wilson home in Towanda.

The children are: Harry, Jr. and Melvin of Towanda, Mrs. R. E. Phillips (Eleine) of Valley Center and Mrs. C. E. Mitchell (Evelyn) of Cokato, Minn. There are eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Guests arriving to extend congratulations and best wishes were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson.

For the occasion, Mrs. Wilson chose a turquoise lace dress. Her corsage was fashioned around a golden Cattalya orchid. Mr. Wilson wore a golden rose boutonniere.

Centering the beautifully decorated table was a bouquet of white Fujii mums and yellow rosebuds complimented by golden colored candles in gold candelabra.

Those who called from out of town included Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Max McConachie and children, Dr. and Mrs. D. O. Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald R. Jones and Janeille and Jay Rose all of Wichita.

MOODY, TACY S. MANBECK

Mrs. H.J. Moody, wife of the Methodist minister at Cassiday, died last night in a Wichita hospital following a weeks serious illness. She was 68 years old.

Highly respected, Mrs. Moody is a distinct loss to the Cassiday Community where she had resided for the past year. She was born in New Rumley, Ohio, birthplace of General George Custer, and was reared in the same house in which General Custer was born.

Mrs. Moody is survived by her husband, 2 sons L.W. Moody of Ottawa, and D.L. Moody of Independence, Mo. and a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Hanson (John Hanson), a sister Mrs. C.B. Mills of K.C., Mo. and 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to be held at the Methodist Church at Hutchinson tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 and interment is also there. (El Dorado Times, Aug. 28, 1941, pg. 1, Note: correction added in ( ), submitted by Ruth I. Stude)
