MASTERS,
PATRICK G.
Man is Fatally Stabbed at Rest Area
A suspect is being sought in the stabbing death
of an Arkansas City man at a roadside park along U.S. 77 at the south of Douglass Wednesday afternoon.
The victim is identified as Patrick G. Masters, 31.
The suspect is described as being a white man in his mid-20's with neck length dark wavy hair, a beard, and possibly a moustache.
He is about six feet tall and descriptions of his build have ranged from slender to stocky.
He reportedly left the scene on U.S. 77 driving a late model two tone blue (possibly blue with a black top) vehicle while was described as "dirty and beat up looking." Butler County Undersheriff Ron Peters said.
The public's assistance is being sought in finding the suspect. Anyone with information about him or who may have seen him around the area is asked to call the sheriff's office.
The stabbing is believed to have taken place between 3:15 and 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. The victim had been stabbed numerous times, Peters said. No motive has been determined.
The victim's body was found slumped in a late model Buick Rivera. He was found around 3:45 p.m. by Wes Castor, a Douglass High School sophomore, and other Douglass students who had gone to the park after school.
The students are believed to have seen the suspect, according to information from Sam Davis a member of the police department in Douglass.
Davis arrived on the scene shortly after "Harold reached inside the car and felt of his pulse and said he was dead." Davis said.
Apparently the victim was stabbed in the men's rest room and managed to make his way back to his car where he died. Bloodstains were found on three walls and floor of the rest room as well as on the inside and outside of the rest room door and on the entryway walls and floors.
He apparently walked through a grassy area to the car, where a large amount of blood was found on the pavement by the door on the driver's side.
There was blood down the driver's side of the outside of the car and on the pavement. The rest room was bloody as the dickens, Davis said.
Sheriff's officers were called to the scene at 3:49 p.m. and stayed there about four hours, combing the area for evidence. Highway Patrol Officers assisted at the scene and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called in to help in the continuing investigation. (El Dorado Times, March 1, 1979)
