ECKEL, RUTH A. (MRS. WILLIAM)

Mrs. William (Ruth A.) Eckel, 85, retired Methodist minister, died Wednesday, September 28, 1977. Funeral services were Monday with the first at 10 a.m. at the Douglass First United Methodist Church and the second one at Memorial Park Cemetery at Tulsa, Oklahoma, at 3:30 p.m.

Mrs. Eckel was a past minister of the Douglass First United Methodist Church. She came to Douglass after the death of her first husband, C. J. Montgomery.
Mrs. Eckel had married Mr. Montgomery on June 9, 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

After coming to Douglass and becoming the minister of the Methodist Church, she married William Eckel. Eckel preceded her in death in 1956.

Mrs. Eckel was a member of the order of the Eastern Star. She was a 50 year member and a Past Worthy Matron in Oklahoma.

She is survived by one half sister and three nieces.

Mrs. J. L. Taylor of Douglass is a step-daughter.

A memorial has been established in her name with the Douglass First United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Pallbeaerer were her great-grandsons, J. L. Frakes, Darrel Frakes, Jr., Charles Frakes, Richard Frakes, Marty Wright and Mark Wright.

KEMP, NAOMI LOUISE

Naomi Louise Kemp, 61, of 513 Santa Fe, Augusta, died January 25 at the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

Services were held Friday at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel in Augusta with burial in the Elmwood Cemetery at Augusta.

Mrs. Kemp waas born Jan. 9, 1917 at Arcadia, the daughter of Geroge Sylvester and Nellie May Prettyman Wade

She is survived by two sons, Irvin L. McDowell of 1127 Shelden and Charles B. McDowell of Montana; two brothers, James Wade of Douglass and George wade of the Veterans Hospital at Topeka; a sister, Leona Thompson, 112 East 12th Augusta; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. LEE, WILLARD J.

Willard J. Lee, 54, Oxford, Dies

Willard J. Lee, 54, of Oxford, a General Electric Company employee, died Wednesday.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home at Douglass.

Survivors are his wife, Eva, of the home; five sons, Maurice of Overland Park, Mark, Randall and Michael, all of Oxford; and Richard of Winfield; a daughter, Mary Ann of the home; his mother, Mrs. Lilly Lee of Douglass; a brother, Glenn of Seattle, Wash., and a sister, Mrs. Mildred Bloomershine of Wichita.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church building fund at Douglass. (The El Dorado Times, Thursday, May 25, 1978)

MURRAY, EVA L.

Eva L. Murray, 86, of Douglass, Dies

Eva L. Murray, 86, of Douglass and former Wichitan, a retired legal secretary, died Tuesday.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Newkirk Cemetery, at Newkirk, Okla.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Miller of Denver and Mrs. Frances Wright of Newton, a brother, C. Findley Parker of Hays, and a sister, Mrs. Mae smith of Douglass.

OWEN, LUCY (MRS. HARRY L.)

Lucy (Mrs. Harry L.) Owen, 81, of Douglass, a retired teacher, died Wednesday.

Services were to have been held today at the First Christian Church at Douglass.

Survivors are a daughter, Marjorie Schreiner of Douglass; two brothers, Wayne Oliver and Tommy Oliver, and a sister, Kathryn Coleman all of Madill, Okla.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church at Douglass. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home of Douglass was in charge of arrangements. (El Dorado Times, January 29, 1979)

OZBUN, WALLACE E.

Wallace E. Ozbun, 74, of Douglass, a farmer and stockman, died Thursday.

Services were to have been held today at Harper.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Pomeroy of Norwich. (El Dorado Times, September 30, 1978)

PHIPPS, ANNA B.

Anna B. Phipps, 93, Wichita, sister of Essie Petrie, Douglass, died yesterday at Wesley Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Byrd-Snodgrass Downtown Funeral Home, Wichita. Rev. Mark Opliger and rev. Leonard Cowan will officiate and graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in the Maple Grove cemetery, Hazelton.

Mrs. Phipps was born April 20, 1885 in Hazelton to William B. George and Sarah Coulter. She married Charles Phipps who died Feb. 3, 1966.

She was a member of the Illus Daylight Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and worked at the Phipps Food Market, Wichita.

Other survivors include a son, Seward Phipps, Wichita, daughters, Katherine Phipps, Carol Phifer, both of Wichita, Evelyn Hamilton, Palm Desert, Calif., Ruth Leinbrock, Mountain View, Calif., Charlene O'Connor, Belmont, Calif., 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Arvel A. Rutledge, 83, Wichita, Dies

Arvel Arnim Rutledge, 83, of Wichita, a retired Boeing Wichita company employee, died Friday.

Services were to have been held today at Wichita.

Survivors are his wife, Isabell; a son, Arvel J. of Wichita, two daughters, Mrs. Melba Wright of Garden City, Mich., and Mrs. Vida Nunley of Columbus, Ga., a brother, Jack of California and three sisters, Mrs. Reba Barber of Douglass, Mrs. Ressie Arnold of Newkirk, Ark., and Mrs. Etta Clark of Chico, Calif. THOMAS, JAY B.

Jay B. Thomas, 62, of Wichita, a Tommie's Cleaners employee, died Sunday.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Resthaven Mortuary at Wichita.

Survivors are his wife, Ruby; three sons, Robert L. of Derby, Paul Larry of Douglass and Charles E. of Wichita, a daughter, Mrs. Sherry Rohr of Wichita; three brothers, Charles D. of Wichita, Ralph C. of Dallas and Elmer of Ingelwood, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Nadine Sargent of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Ann Hager of Fort Wayne, Ind. TREFETHER, SHIRLEY ANN (MRS. LEE M.)

Shirley Ann (Mrs. Lee M.) Trefethen, 49, of Douglass, a seamstress, died Friday.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Cochran Mortuary in Wichita.

Survivors are her husband, three sons, Howard L., and Jack both of Wichita and Larry D., of Augusta; three daughters, Mrs. JoAnn Pilant and Sharon K both of Wichita and Mrs. Sandra G. Hutton of Pretty Prairie; three brothers, Donald Ray of Ellsworth and Gene Ray and Bill Ray both of Goddard, and a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Ledford of Stillwater, Okla.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. (El Dorado Times. December 8, 1979)

UNDERWOOD, CHARLES W.

Charles W. Underwood, 70, of Eureka, died January 30 at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa.

Services were held Thursday at the Campbell Funeral Home, Eureka, with burial in the Matfield Green Cemetery.

He was born March 16, 1907, at Matfield Green, the son of George and Carrie Pracht Underwood. He married Irene P. Shaw on Sept. 5, 1930 at Emporia.

He retired in 1969 from the Cities Service Company. He spent most of his life in the Matfield Green, Madison and Eureka area.

He was a member of the El Dorado Odd Fellows Lodge and the First Christian Church of Eureka.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Howard of Liberal; a daughter, Mrs. Leroy Brown of Ottawa; three brothers, Loy, of Guthrie, Okla.; Roy of Wichita, and Homer of Bossier City, La.; four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Marsha, Augusta; Mrs. Bill Pringle and Mrs. Naomi Murray, both of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Walter Corfman, Wichita, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. VOTAW, JESSE W.

Jesse W. Votaw, 87, of 537 North High, El Dorado, died Monday morning at his home.

Services were held Wednesday at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Votaw was born Nov. 2, 1890 at Pennville, Jay County, Ind., the son of Ellis Ervin and Cora Emma (Crumrine) Votaw. On August 4, 1912, he married Tenna Bates at Gerald, Mo. They moved to El Dorado in November 1917 from Montpelier, Ind. He was employed by American Petrofina as a boiler fireman until his retirement in 1959.

His memberships included the First Christian church, Patmos Lodge No. 97, Wichita Consistory, of which he was a life member and the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Local Union No. 5-241.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Ellis of Topeka; three daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Frances) Manka of Douglass, Mrs. Thelma Webster of West Covina, Calif., and Mrs. W. D. (Dorothea) Palmer of Dallas, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandson. (Douglass Tribune, February 1, 1978)
