CUPP, DANIEL H.

Daniel H. Cupp, aged 93 years, a resident of Kansas for the past 70 years, veteran of the Civil War and one of the most widely known pioneers of Butler County died at 9:25 o’clock last evening at the home of his son, Roy Cupp, one and a half miles northwest of Towanda, following an illness of only a few hours.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock, Thursday afternoon at the Towanda Christian Church, and burial will be made in the Towanda Cemetery. The Downing Mortuary of Wichita is in charge of the arrangements.

SHOCK TO FRIENDS

The death of Mr. Cupp came as a distinct shock to his hundreds of friends throughout the county. He had been in good health all winter for a man of his age. When he arose yesterday morning, it was seen that he was not feeling well. However, he improved later in the day and ate a hearty meal at noon. He appeared to be feeling all right in the afternoon and early evening. He retired for the night about 8:30 o’clock and less than an hour later he died. A relapse in his condition occurred shortly after he went to bed.

Mr. Cupp was firmly identified in many ways with the growth of Butler County. He was one of Towanda’s first postmasters and he also was trustee of the township in which he resided for six years. Mr. Cupp always took an interest in the development of the county, and his efforts in the early days were partially responsible for making Butler the fine county which it is.

Mr. Cupp was born on October 20, 1837, in Summerset County, PA. He served in the Seventeenth Kansas Regiment during the Civil war. In 1860, Mr. Cupp, came to Kansas and in 1864 he homesteaded the farm, on which he died. He had lived on the place continuously since. Mr. Cupp was married to Sarah Malan in September 1861. She died on march 25, 1923. To them, 11 children were born, four of whom survive. In addition to his son, Roy, Mr. Cupp, is survived by B. M. Cupp, also of Towanda; U. S. Cupp of El Monte, Calif., and Ben Cupp of Murdock. Seventeen grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren also are living.

Aided in Big Capture

Mr. Cupp, when he first enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil war, became a member of Jim Lane’s Cavalry. He first went to Leavenworth, and was later transferred to Fort Lincoln, and then to Fort Riley. Mr. Cupp was sergeant of his company when Rogers and Stanton were captured in the southeastern part of Butler County. This capture consisted of $30,000 worth of arms and cattle and thirty men. The troops took the outfit to Fort Lincoln, where it was turned over to the government.

Mr. Cupp delighted in telling of his early day experiences in Kansas. When he and Mrs. Cupp located near Towanda, this vast country was unbroken prairie land. Roaming bands of Osages, Kaws, and Shawnees frequented the neighborhood of the Cupp home. Wild game of all kinds was plentiful. (El Dorado Times, January 13, 1930)
