PETTY, NORMAN E.

Norman E. Petty, 70, of Colby, died Friday at Memorial Hospital, Colorado Springs, Colo. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beulah Cemetery, Colby, with Rev. Reed Hartford officiating.

He was born May 16, 1931 in Wichita. He was a teacher, and also worked with radio stations KXXX in Colby and Goodland where he was known as “The Golden Voice of the Plains” and KWYD in Colorado Springs where he was known as Don Hayes.

Survivors include: his wife, Vetha (Barnes) petty, daughters, Yvonne Short, Yolanda Kelso, Teresa Graham, Victoria Stroud; a brother, Bruce Petty; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

PIPPIG, LEWIS ABRAHAM

Lewis Abraham Pippig, a resident of Butler County for 65 years, died here early yesterday morning at the age of 87. He had been ill 13 weeks.

Mr. Pippig whose home was at 128 West First, was born at Punxsutawney, PA., on July 8, 1861. He came to this county from Pennsylvania in 1883 and located near DeGraff where he went to work for the late Col. A. C. Ramsey on the Buckeye Ranch. He later became foreman of the ranch and then started farming for himself.

About 1890 Mr. Pippig raced to Oklahoma where he staked a claim when the Indian Territory was opened there. He later returned to Butler County.

Mr. Pippig served on the Cole Creek school board for many years and also was a member of the Lincoln Township board for several terms. He was affiliated with the Christian Church and had been a continuous member of the I. O. O. F. since 1901.

He was married in Butler County to Sarah Ishmael on March 12, 1885, but she died in 1930.

Surviving are a brother, Charles A. Pippig, Fresno, Calif., three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Milbourne, Oswego, Mrs. Emma Marshall, Sutter, Calif., and Miss Anna Pippig, Oswego; two daughters, Mrs. Fred Neukirch, Alva, Okla., and Mrs. Henry Hoy, Cassoday, a son, Herbert K. Pippig, El Dorado; 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Byrd Funeral Home at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon with Dr. Charles A. Jupin, Pastor of the First Christian Church, in charge. Burial will be in Ridgeway Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, April 11, 1949)

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Byrd Funeral Home for Lewis Abraham Pippig who died here Sunday. Many persons who attended the rites and the large floral display attested to the respect in which Mr. Pippig was held in the El Dorado community.

Dr. Charles A. Jupin, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiated and burial was in Ridgeway Cemetery near DeGraff.

Pallbearers were w. Max Haney, Bert Hall, Herbert Hoy, Donald Hursh, Frank Neukirch and Newton Schuler. Honorary casket bearers included Wallace Cammeron, Charles B. Guinn, Rex Hill, W. M. Lowderman, Robert Miller and E. A. Putnam.

W. C. Lange accompanied by Mrs. Fred Burr, sang “The Last Mile of the Way” and “Sunrise Tomorrow.”

Flower bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Egan. Members of the local I. O. O. F. lodge attended in a group and conducted services at the grave. (El Dorado Times, April 19, 1949)

PIPPIG, WILLIAM G.

William G. Pippig, aged 74 years well known resident died suddenly early today at the home of his daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Arnall, Route 1, El Dorado. He was born March 28, 1869 in Pennsylvania and came to Butler County in 1875 when he was six years of age. He had resided in and around El Dorado most of his lifetime, having farmed south of El Dorado, west of Cave Springs, and north of El Dorado. He also lived for two years at Newton.

He was married to Miss Cora Hobbs, July 15, 1896 at Chelsea. Since her death on May 18, 1935, he had made his home with his children. Mr. Pippig was a member of the Methodist Church at Chelsea.

Besides the daughter, Mrs. E. M. Arnall, he is also survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Arnall and a son, Kenneth Pippig all of the El Dorado community, three sisters, Mrs. R. W. Milbourn and Miss Margaret Ann Pippig both of Oswego and Mrs. Bert Marshall, residing in Oregon; and two brothers, C. A. Pippig, of Fresno, Calif., and L. A. Pippig of El Dorado and three grandchildren.

Tentative plans are to hold the funeral services Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Byrd Funeral Home. (El Dorado Times, January 20, 1944)

Funeral services for William G. Pippig, retired farmer, who died suddenly, Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. M. Arnall, south of El Dorado, were held Saturday afternoon at the Byrd Funeral Home. Rev. Alvin W. Murray, pastor of the Methodist Church officiated. Interment was made in the Ridgeway Cemetery, near DeGraff.

The following persons were pallbearers: Ward Snyder, Will Auer, Charles B. Guinn, Roy Hobbs, Earl Hodges and J. H. Schuler. Mrs. Roy Morris and Mrs. Ed Detwiler sang two duets, "Old Rugged Cross," and "Goodnight Here and Good Morning Up There."

Honorary pallbearers included: J. A. Milbourn, P. T. Buchanan, G. H. Faulconer, T. P. Mannion, Henry Hoy, R. C. Jones and Henry Pugh. (El Dorado Times, January 24, 1944)

PIPPIG, WILLIAM G. MRS.

Mrs. William G. Pippig, of Augusta, Route 2, died Saturday night at the home of her daughter and son in law Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Arnall, who reside a short distance south of El Dorado.

Mrs. Pippig who was 60 years old, had resided in the El Dorado Community all her life having moved from Lincoln Township to the Augusta community only last March. She was well known here and her death is mourned by scores. The Butler County woman had been in ill health for the past five years but had been seriously ill for only a week.

Mrs. Pippig was born in Lincoln Township on November 12, 1874 and was married at Chelsea on July 15, 1896. She was a member of the Chelsea Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Kenneth of El Dorado, two daughters, Ruth B. Arnall, Route 1, El Dorado, a sister, Mrs. Jake Dalke of Wichita, four brothers, Roy, Route 4, El Dorado, Harve, of Wichita, Oliver of Cassoday and W. F. Hobbs of DeGraff and three grandsons, Eugene and Billy Arnall and Gerald E. Pippig.

Funeral services will be held at the Byrd Funeral Home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. J. W. Abel, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Ridgeway Cemetery, north of El Dorado. (El Dorado Times, May 20, 1935)

Funeral services for Mrs. William G. Pippig, of Augusta, Route 2, who died Saturday at the home of her daughter and son in law Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Arnall of El Dorado were held at the Byrd Funeral Home yesterday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Abel, pastor of the Methodist Church officiated. A large group of friends and relatives of the Butler County woman attended the services.

Mr. and Mrs. William Lange sang “The Old Rugged Cross” “Gathering Home and “there is No Disappointment in Heaven.” Pallbearers were Dill Marshall, Ward Snyder, Charles B. Grimm, Arthur Thompson, J. POWELL, CARL E. MRS.

Mrs. Carl E. Powell, 203 South Topeka, died at her home December 3, 1946, following a long illness. She was born March 20, 1878 at Madison, Iowa. She was a member of the El Dorado Christian Church, P. E. O. Senior W. M. B. club and Book Lovers club. She had been a resident of El Dorado 46 years.

Surviving are her husband, Carl E. Powell, one son, Clifford E. Powell, of El Dorado, and two grandsons, John and Dick Powell.

Services were held at the Arnold Kirby Funeral Home Friday morning, the Rev. Ozie Pruett of the First Baptist church officiating. Interment was in Belle Vista Mausoleum. (El Dorado Times, December 6, 1946)

ADSIT, CYRUS BOYD

Cyrus Boyd Adsit, 2 week old son of Mr. and Mrs. Adsit of Fairview Township, died at the El Dorado Hospital this morning. The funeral services will be held tomorrow and burial will be made in the Towanda Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, January 12, 1921)

BARNETT, OLIVE LEE

Olive Lee Barnett, three month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Barnett, 329 North Vine Street, died yesterday morning after a few days illness caused by pneumonia. The body will be sent to Phillipsburg, Missouri tonight, where burial will be made the last of the week. Mr. Barnett is a well known drilling contractor in the Butler County fields. There are no other children in the family. (El Dorado Times, Thursday, January 20, 1921)

BROOKS, ELLEN

Mrs. Ellen Brooks, aged 67 died last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Lyman, 1021 North Gordy Street. She had been ill for a number of weeks. The body will be sent to Perry, Oklahoma tonight where burial will be made the last of the week. (El Dorado Times, January 13, 1921, Thursday)

COLE, L. G.

L. G. Cole, aged 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Cole, 303 South Summit Street, died last night after a several weeks illness caused by paralysis. The attack was caused by the youth attempting to lift an automobile which had been wrecked. No funeral arrangements have been made, and none will be until word is received from relatives in the East.

In addition to his parents, the youth is survived by several sisters and brothers. They are: Mrs. A. McDoets, and Oscar Cole of Pennsylvania, and Mildred Cordelia, Arthur, Thelma, Fred and Virgil Cole of El Dorado. Several other relatives also survive. (El Dorado Times, Saturday, January 8, 1921)

HARE, FRED JR.

Fred Hare Jr., 8 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Hare, 207 North Vine Street died yesterday after an illness of a few days caused by pneumonia. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon at the home and burial was made in Belle Vista Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, Monday, January 3, 1921)

HARVEY, HAROLD P.

Harold P. Harvey, 107, of Latham, died Sunday, January 1, 1995. Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Brownlow Cemetery, Latham.

He was born June 28, 1887 in Monrovia, Ind., the son of Dr. David B. and Mariah Hortense (Miller) Harvey. On Nov. 10, 1906 he and Katie B. Wright were married. She died in January 1975.

He was a rancher, for many years south of Beaumont until 1972 when he moved to Chanute where he helped out at Brazil Grain storage for the next 17 years. In September, 1992 he moved to Chanute. His memberships included Masonic Lodge 223 of Leon where he was a member for 69 years and a past master.

Survivors include: son, Joe of Lindale, Texas; daughters, Hortense Jester of Wichita, Anna Bussard of Greenwood, S. C., 12 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 38 great-great grandchildren and two great great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Carl and two grandchildren.

HOLDING, MARY THERESA

Mary Theresa Holding, 73, of Walnut, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 10, 1995 at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carlson wall Funeral Home in St. Paul. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul with Msgr. Vincent Hogan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was born Sept. 29, 1921, the daughter of George and Sophia (VanLeeuwen) Schoenhofer, in Walnut where she attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School. On Jan. 3, 1939, she and Alfred W. Holding were married in Walnut.

She was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church, Altar Society, Arthritis Foundation and promoted the Association of the Miraculous Medal.

Survivors include husband, Alfred, sons Jim of El Dorado, Harold of Goddard, Mark of Andover, Don of Columbus, daughters, Norma Jean Kozisek, of Lee Summit, Mo., Kathleen Clark of Walnut, brother George Schoenhofer, sister, Bertha Kanute both of St. Paul, 20 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials are to the Arthritis Foundation or the church. (El Dorado Times, January 12, 1995)

HOLLAND, ERNEST C.

Ernest C. Holland, 30, of El Dorado, Kan., died yesterday morning in St. Joseph’s Hospital, following an operation for chronic appendicitis, which as performed last Wednesday. Mr. Holland had come to Memphis for treatment after suffering for six months, because two sisters had received their training as nurses in St. Joseph’s and were at hand to give him tender care during his illness.

He was a son of Mrs. Lulu Walker Holland of 509 Mosby Avenue, and the late Daniel Holland of Terre Haute, Ind. For the last seven years, Mr. Holland has resided in El Dorado. Besides his mother, he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hallie Cooper Holland, four brothers, Edward of Winchester, Ky., Charles of Rock River, Wyo., Francis of Terre Haute and Lewis of Memphis, and three sisters, Misses Mary C., Rose R., and Zelia Holland all of Memphis. Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tenn.

Mr. Holland was well known here where he lived at 701 North Star Street. He was a driller in the oil fields. He was married four years ago. (El Dorado Times, Monday, January 10, 1921)

MCCARTY, WALLACE BYRON

Wallace Bryon McCarty, 8 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris McCarty, who reside on the Knox Farm five and a half miles northwest of El Dorado, died last night after several weeks of illness caused by meningitis. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon at the home of A. Weber at Potwin. Burial will be made in the McGill Cemetery near Potwin. In addition to his parents, the baby is survived by a brother walter Eugene, aged 2. (El Dorado Times, January 12, 1921)

NEILAN, M. J.

M. J. Neilan, aged 69, who had lived in this section of the country for the past three years, died yesterday afternoon at the home of his son, George Neilan, in Stone park. Death was caused by heart trouble. No funeral arrangements will be made until word is received from relatives in the East.

Mr.Neilan was a tank builder, but had been unable to work for the past year. His condition became worse several days ago. He was well known among the oil field workers.

The deceased is survived by his son, George of El Dorado, William J. Neilan of Clarksburg, W. Va., F. C. Neilan, of New Wilson, Okla., and his divorced wife and several daughters who live at Pittsburgh, Pa. The children are Winifred, Beatrice, Mary and Geraldine. PEFFLEY, ZACHARIAH

Zachariah Peffley, died at his home, 804 South Star, this morning at 6 o’clock, aged 86 years, 4 months and 7 days. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, but the service will probably be held in the Methodist Church, Wednesday, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. E. King, with burial in the family lot in Belle Vista Cemetery.

Mr. Peffley was born near Ladoga, Ind., September 24, 1834. His parents, John and Mary Peffley, came from Virginia and located in Indiana in frontier days and his childhood, youth and young manhood were that of the rugged frontiersman. On September 24, 1857 he was married to Sarah Jane Barrett who died November 3, 1861. On September 3, 1862 he was married to Nancy Parkhurst, the mother of his children of whom four sons and two daughters survive. Mrs. Peffley died August 17, 1904. Surviving will be missed by man how have known him so long. He united with the Methodist Church at an early age and his life was one of consistency and good works. He had been an Odd Fellow for more than a half century and proudly wore the jewel conferred by the order, distinguishing his long and faithful service. The world will miss him, his many friends will feel his loss, but his family and loved ones mourn the departure of one to whom they had looked all their lives as a kind father, a loving husband a teacher and instructor one whose influence and example was well worthy of emulation. A good man has gone, but the world is better for his having lived. (El Dorado Times, February 1, 1921)

SIMMONS, DONALD

Donald Simmons, aged nine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Simmons, 513 West Olive Avenue, died about 2 o’clock this morning after a few days illness caused by diphtheria. The youth’s illness was reported to the city health department yesterday. No funeral arrangements have been made. (El Dorado Times, Thursday, January 6, 1921)

Funeral services for Donald Simmons, aged 9, who died early yesterday morning after a short illness caused by diphtheria, were held at the Simmons home, 513 West Olive Avenue, this afternoon and burial was made in the West Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, Friday, January 7, 1921)

THELEMANN, JENNIE KITT GIBSON

Mrs. Jeannie Kitt Gibson Thelemann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Gibson, a pioneer of the Latham neighborhood, died at the home of her mother at Wichita, January 1, and burial has been made in the Latham Cemetery. Mrs. Thelemann was well known in Butler County.

The deceased was born April 30, 1886 at Sedan. She was married to Wiliam Thelemann, June 22, 1917. They moved to Wichita to make their home March 15, 1920. Mrs. Thelemann was a member of the Methodist Church and always took an active part in the congregation of which she was a member. She is only survived by her mother and husband. WHELING, HERBERT DWIGHT

Herbert Dwight Wehling, 41, of Great Bend, oil field worker and father of John E. and Justin Wehling, both of Towanda, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1986. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ayres Calbeck Mortuary in Pratt.

Other survivors include his wife, Diana, stepsons, Jeff Rocha and Robert England both of Great Bend, and brothers, Gale of Pratt and R. D. of Burlington, Colo. (El Dorado Times, Oct. 25, 1986)

WHITEHEAD, DAVID T.

On the day before his 70th birthday anniversary, David T. Whitehead, former El Doradoan, died at Hot Springs, Ark. where he spent the past two years for the benefit of his health. Mr. Whitehead was the father of Mrs. Harry West, 1239 West Central Avenue and funeral services will be held at the Christian Church in El Dorado at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. L. T. Faulders will officiate and interment will be made in Belle Vista Cemetery.

Mr. Whitehead had been a semi-invalid since he was shot, while on duty as night policeman in El Dorado twenty nine years ago. Mr. Whitehead was born January 20, 1853 near Jersey, O., and lived there until manhood, moving to Urbana, O., and from there to El Dorado in 1886. El Dorado was his home until 1910 when he moved to Mannford, Okla. He was a member of the W. O. W. lodge and the Christian Church. Surviving are the widow and three daughters, Mrs. Harry West, Mrs. W. D. Seibert, of the Kansas city; Mrs. B. J. Chronic, of Tulsa; three brothers, I. O. Whitehead, of El Dorado and Lee and L. W. Whitehead of Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Lucinda Bowie, Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. Eva Martin, Mannford, Okla. The relatives will arrive here this evening on the Missouri Pacific. WILLIAMS, BERNICE

Bernice Williams, 91, of Douglass, homemaker, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1986. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Conway Springs.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Riggs of Denver and seven grandchildren.

WILSON, FAY JR.

Fay Wilson, Jr., the 1 day old son of Mr. and Mrs. Fay Wilson, who live on the Hull Higgins lease, west of El Dorado, died early yesterday afternoon. Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock this morning and burial was made in the West Cemetery, Rev. C. E. King, of the Methodist church officiated.
