GRAY, JOHN

County Attorney George J. Benson, Under Sheriff T. N. Pourcell and Coroner W. E. Turner were called to Andover Sunday night at 10 o'clock by word that John Gray had been burned to death in his home. They were unable to find any evidence which would tend to establish a murder of suicide theory and no inquest was held.

Mr. Gray and his brother, Will had been at the home of John Gray southeast of Andover four miles, Sunday afternoon with another man and the two brothers had taken the other man part way home," County Attorney Benson said. "They returned and John Gray got out of the buggy, remarking that he would be down Monday to help his brother build some fence. Then Will Gray drove on to his home, a mile away.

"About 7:30 p.m. the house was discovered to be on fire and when the neighbors reached there it was so far gone that nothing could be saved. John Gray, who had been lying on a bed on the second floor, had fallen through to the first floor, and was dead when they got him out, his body being burned to a crisp and was hardly recognizable. They got his body out by throwing water and dirty on the fire in that room.

"Mr. Gray was 46 years old, and was a bachelor, living alone on his farm. He carried no insurance and those who knew him said he owed no debts nor had any other financial matters to worry him and cause him to commit suicide.

"The cause of the fire is a mystery and from all evidence we could find no traces of suicide or murder." (El Dorado Times, February 6, 1914)
