WICHITA UNIONIST IS DEAD THOMAS PIERCE LED MACHINISTS
Union leader Thomas E. Pierce, who labored
for years with passion and intelligence and humor to make life better for workers, is dead at 53.
''He was always thinking of the future," said Pat Lehman, who worked with Mr. Pierce for 20 years in union
and political activities.
"His loss is going to be felt throughout the community and especially by those who never knew him but who
are benefitting today from some of the ideas he had, some of the programs he planned, some of the work he did."
Mr. Pierce, past president of the Kansas AFL-CIO and longtime machinists union activist, died Saturday. The service
will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Union Cemetery in Benton.
Mr. Pierce served two terms as president of the state federation of labor. He was twice elected president of the
Wichita AFL-CIO.
Born in Belle Plaine on June 18, 1932, Mr. Pierce graduated from Augusta High School in 1950. He attended Wichita
University. He served for four years in the Air Force, including a stint in Korea.
In 1956, he went to work for Beech as a brake operator. He worked the rest of his life for the aircraft manufacturer
and for the International Association of Machinists, District 70.
He served the union as a shop steward, organizer, business agent, contract negotiator and elected official. In
1976, he was elected district secretary-treasurer, a post he held until his death.
Friends say he was both a dedicated activist and a kind and funny friend. ''He was just one of those persons you
felt very comfortable with," said Ruth Hicklin, a colleague since 1956. "He'll be missed, believe me,
he'll be missed. There will be a void."
''I don't think in his heart he ever left the shop floor," said Lehman. "His whole life was spent trying
to give the average working person the opportunity to have a decent life."
Lehman said Mr. Pierce was as generous with his own money as he was tight with union dues. He often gave laid-off
workers money for gas or rent. "His entire wardrobe consisted of Banlon short-sleeve shirts, slacks and union
windbreakers," she said.
''And he was fun."
Mr. Pierce is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter, Deborah Quade of Wichita; a step-daughter, Pandora Cameron
of Wichita; his mother, Thelma Pierce of Augusta; brothers Max of El Dorado and George of Oklahoma City; sisters
Joan Watts of Wichita and Joyce Daniels of Augusta; and two grandchildren.
A memorial has been established at the trust department of Bank IV- Wichita.
