ROSE HILL - Mahlandt, Cathy, 38, determinedly
fought breast cancer for five years, even as she breathed her last breath, she had not given up. She went to be
with the Lord Sunday, July 18, 2004. Visitation 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Smith Mortuary, Derby; rosary 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday; funeral mass 2 p.m. Wednesday, both at St. James Catholic Church, 1010 Belmont Ave., Augusta; burial will
follow in Richland Cemetery, Douglass.
She was born Nov. 4, 1965 in Valentine, NE. Her early years were spent on the family cattle ranch on the Rosebud
Reservation in South Dakota with her parents, Billy and Marycile, sister, Shirlee and brothers, Jim and Keith.
In 1978, the Beer family moved to a rural area near Rose Hill and while there she completed her education and graduated
from Rose Hill High School. In 1983, she married Kerry Mahlandt and moved to the farm. Her years on the ranch had
given her insight into the agricultural business and she worked along side her husband, Kerry, as they farmed and
raised cattle. Born into this union were 3 children, Matthew, Savannah and Karl. Her duties as wife and mother
kept her busy. It was hard to know what you might find her doing: driving a tractor, cooking for harvesters; going
for parts; working cattle; hauling feed or attending one of the many activities at school. Her fight through these
five years with cancer never slowed her down a bit. She held her bald head high as a badge of courage. She cooked
at the bowling alley during this time and the only time you found her head covered was when the weather was cold
and she wore a bandana.
She is survived by her husband, Kerry; sons, Matthew and Karl; daughter, Savannah all of the home; parents, Bill
and Marycile Beer, Harper; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Darcee Beer, Pretty Prairie, Keith and Teresa Beer,
Dexter; sister and brother-in-law, Shirlee and Fred Ungerer, Casper, WY; mother-in-law, Alpha Mahlandt, Rose Hill;
sisters-in-law and their husbands, Joyce and Darrell Cook, Atlanta, Judy and Kenn Wealand, Cedar Point, Terrie
and Bob Gould, Douglass, Gay Mahlandt, Rose Hill; god child, Morgan Cook; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and
neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked memorials be made to Cathy Mahlandt Memorial Fund in c/o Mulvane State
Bank. Smith Mortuary, Derby.
