" September 26, 1932 – Joseph H. (Uncle Joe) Cooper 89 years old Died at St John’s Hospital at Joplin, Mo. At 5:25 Sunday afternoon after an illness of one month. Mr. Cooper was born in Pike County, Ill. Sept. 5, 1843 where he grew to manhood and joined the Army enlisting in Co. D. Seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry.Coming to Baxter Oct. 11, 1867 while a young man Mr. Cooper spent several years on his homestead near Treece, KS., but later moved to Baxter Springs where he became associated with his brother John M. Cooper in the grocery business. He was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic. When Mr. Cooper came to Baxter Springs there was only one building south of Ninth street, a frame store building on the present location of the Barnsdall Filling Station. A saw mill was operated where the R. E. Murdock residence now stands and the post office was located on the present location of the Charles L. Smith home. For twenty years Mr. Cooper had made his home with his nephew John I. Cooper. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C. A. Shinn of Seneca, Mo., and Mrs. Charles Stroup of Joplin and two sons John M. Cooper of Seneca and Joseph H. Cooper of Carthage, Mo. Funeral services will be held from the Christian Church at 2:30 Thursday afternoon with the Rev. Geo Jones officiating. Burial will be made in the Baxter Springs Cemetery, "

William Green died Thursday Feb. 8th, 1894 and was buried Saturday Feb. 10th by the Baxter Springs Post G. A. R. and the A. F. & M. combined. William Green was born in England in 1840 on the 2nd of December and immigrated to this country with his parents when a small boy. He enlisted in Company C 13th Infantry United States Regulars – Mo in March 1861 and participated in several important engagements. He was a charter member of the Baxter Springs Post G. A. R. No. 123 and was Junior Commander of the Post. Was also a member of the A. F. & A. M. Lodge of this city.

November 5, 1925 – Elijah Harmon 76 years old member of the G. A. R. Veteran of the Civil War died at 10:30 o’clock Wednesday morning at his home 338 Grant Ave. He had been a resident of Baxter Springs for over thirty years. Mr. Harmon enlisted in the Army October 18, 1861 in Unionville, Putman County, Missouri and was mustered into service on November 14, 1861 at Laclede, Mo. as a Private in Company No. 1 Eighteenth Regiment Infantry, volunteering for three years. He was mustered out November 14, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tenn. at the expiration of his term of enlistment. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Katherine Harmon, one brother, Jacob Harmon of Andace, Oklahoma and one sister Francis Fouygh also of Andaco. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the residence. Lillian Thistlewaite had charge of the funeral services and burial was in the Baxter Springs Cemetery
