SLOAN, LOTTIE
Lottie Cook Sloan, 91 of Augusta Ga., died on Jan. 19th at the University Hospital in Augusta. Born in Hiawatha
on Feb. 2. 1883, she was the daughter of David and Laura Kohler Cook. After moving with her family to Winfield
in 1901, she attended Winfield schools and graduated from Winfield High School. Later she received a degree in
piano from the Winfield College of Music. In 1915 she was married to Felix Vincent Sloan, and they made their home
in Winfield. Mrs. Sloan was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield and also affiliated
with the Pricilla Club and Chapter CU of the PEO Sisterhood. Her husband preceded her in death in 1961, and in
1979 she moved to Augusta, Ga., to live with her son and his family. Survivors include her son, Robert Cook Sloan,
of Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jane West of Vallejo, Calif., Nancy Burke of Panama Canal Zone, Panama, James
Sloan of Augusta, Ga., Philip Sloan of Atlanta, Ga.; and seven great- grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30
a.m. Wednesday in Culp Chapel of the First United Methodist Church with interment in Highland Cemetery. The family
will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Memorial Chapel. A memorial has been established with the

SLOAN, FELIX
Felix V. Sloan, 921 Ann, retired groceryman, died suddenly Sunday at 7 a.m. at the home of his son in Bartlesville,
Okla., while on a weekend visit. Mr. Sloan was born in 1883 at Ashtabula, O. and came to the Cambridge Community
when he was 5 years old. He moved to Winfield in 1907. He married Lottie Cook in 1915 in Winfield and operated
a grocery store at 719 Main for about 35 years until his retirement in 1946. He was a member of 1st Methodist church,
Masonic lodge and United Commercial Travelers. He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert C. Sloan of Bartlesville;
and 4 grandchildren, Jane, Nancy, Jim and Phillip. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. W. J. Welfelt, 1406 E.
5th; a brother, Arthur A. Sloan, Tulsa. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:30 at 1st Methodist church with burial
at Highland cemetery. Rev. Everett Mitchell will officiate. The body will lie in state at Swisher-Taylor funeral

GRAHAM, BETTY C.
Betty C. Graham, 53, 1804 E. 19th Str. Winfield, died at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Friday morning.
She was born July 18, 1927 in Anna, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. John F. Haley Sr.
She moved to Winfield in 1949 and was employed for many years at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. William
Newton Memorial Hospital and at Highland Manor Nursing Home.
She is survived by two sons, Harold D. Graham, of the home, and Clyde R. Graham, Wichita and two daughters, Mrs.
Gloria Topper, Rt. 2, Winfield and Sammie Graham of the home, and by five grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at Miles Memorial Chapel in Winfield.

Eva M. Heimer, 81, of Winfield, died this morning at Heritage House Retirement Center.
Born on Sept. 13, 1900 at Rock, Kan., she was the daughter of William H. and Mattie Carmen Wilson. She received
her education in the Green Valley School east of Rock.
She married Otis Heimer on Aug. 13, 1918 at Wichita. The couple farmed near Rock for many years moving to Winfield
in 1937. In 1943, they moved to South Haven returning to Winfield in 1962 following retirement.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include her husband, Otis of Winfield, a son, Price Heimer, 1721 Cherry, two daughters, Mrs. Audine Miller,
Winfield, and Mrs. Glen (Glenda) Funk, San Juan, Texas; a brother, Wayne W. Wilson, Port Saint Lucie, Fla.; two
sisters, Margaret Sturm, Winfield and Helen Adams, Wichita. Eleven grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Miles Memorial Chapel, Winfield officiated by the Rev. Orvan Gilstrap. Interment
will be in Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her name to the Cowley County Hospice Association. Contributions may be left
at the funeral home or sent to Mrs. Gennie Thomas, Box 344 Winfield.

Lillie E. Henderson, 1111 Menor, died Monday morning in Wheat Road Good Samaritan Center.
She was born on Feb. 25, 1902, in Camden County, Mo.
She married Arthur A. Henderson on March 26, 1921 in Tunas, Mo. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1963.
She had lived in Winfield since 1922 coming here from Tunas, Mo. She was employed at the Winfield State Hospital
and Training Center for many years. She was a member of Millington Street Baptist Church; American Legion Auxiliary
and Elks Lodge Auxiliary.
Survivors include: one son, Tom of Wichita, a daughter, Lucille Hansen, Sacramento, Calif., one grandson, one brother,
Woodrow Rife, Knob Noster, Mo., three sisters, Cora Garrett, Springfield, Mo., Ola Kennedy, Preston, Mo.; and Zelma
Edwards, Camdenton, Mo.

Bob Hess, 48, 1502 E. Third St. Died Thursday night in Newton Memorial Hospital, following a motorcycle pickup
truck accident.
Born on Dec. 17, 1932, in Winfield, he was the son of Albert and Goldie Hess. He married Pat Hinkley on Nov. 15,
1956.
He was owner and operator of Bob Hess Painting and Decorating and Hess Softwater Service. He was a veteran of the
Korean War and a member of Church of Christ.
Survivors include: his wife of the home; two sons, James David of the home; and John William of Goddard, Kan.;
one daughter, Mrs. Katherine Goben, Winfield, two brothers, Norman of Augusta, and Francis of Albuquerque, N.M.

Ruby F. Hornberger, 73, 2119 E. 12th st. died Sunday afternoon in William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Born on Jan. 29, 1908 in Linn, Mo., she was the daughter of Walter and Hattie Matthews.
She married Harry Hornberger on Aug. 28, 1926 in Madison, Ill.
She had lived in Winfield since November, 1978, coming here from Madison, Ill. She was a retired Licensed Practical
Nurse and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Winfield.
Survived by her husband, Harry of the home; a daughter, Jewel Behrhorst, Winfield; a son, Danny Lee Hornberger,
Jefferson City, Mo.; three sisters, Zelma Reed, Sedalia, Mo., Dorothy Harmon, Dayton, Ohio, Loraine Cox, St. Louis,
Mo.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her name to Miracles Unlimited, Winfield.

Mrs. Ruby A. Nickel, 75, Rt. 3 Winfield, died suddenly at her home Monday evening.
Born on Dec. 25, 1905 at Oxford, she was the daughter of F. H. and Alta Miller VanWinkle. She received her education
in the Oxford schools and was graduated from the Oxford High School. Following graduation from Pittsburg State
Teachers College she taught in the Winfield High School.
On March 25, 1932 she married C. Grayson Nickel at Dodge City. She was employed as a physical therapist at Winfield
State Hospital and Training Center from 1950 until her retirement in 1970.
She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Winfield.
Survivors include her husband, C. Grayson Nickel of the home, a son, John Nickel, Houston, a daughter, Mrs. Harold
(Jean) Miller, Shawnee, Kan.; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Miles Mortuary Chapel, Winfield, officiated by the Rev. Carlyle Spohr.
Interment will be in Highland Cemetery.

Wanda E. Standfield, 91, Springfield, Mo., died this morning at 12:27 a.m. in the Northside Nursing Home, following
a long illness.
She had been a former resident of the Winfield Arkansas City area and was a member of the Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include: two sisters, Mrs. Vi Brace and Mrs. Pansy Barton both of Springfield, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Enoch Dent went to Kansas with Combs folks, last month. She was taken sick soon after, and died on Monday night, March 27. Hon. John O. Dent telegraphed through W. C. Decker, for a metallic casket, and left via. C. & A. for Wichita, on Monday last. From that point he will go across the country 50 miles. He will probably not reach Wenona before Tuesday next. Ferrell W. Dickerman, 92 of Arkansas City died Wednesday, October 18, 2006 in Arkansas City.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 23, 2006 at the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City.
Ferrell was born January 31, 1914 to William A. Dickerman and Ruth (Scott) Dickerman in Elk City, KS. He attended Oak Grove School as a youngster.
On August 13, 1934 he married Velma I. Yarbrough and the couple made their home in Arkansas City. Ferrell owned and operated the A.C. Fruit and Vegetable Market. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Arkansas City.
Ferrell is survived by his two daughters, Dixie Kincaid and her husband, Humbert of San Antonio, TX, Charlotte Gee and her husband, Ronal of Arkansas City; seven grandchildren, Mitchell Gee, Matthew Gee, Steven Kincaid, Douglas Kincaid, Allen Kincaid, Marsha Ovalee and Kindal Banwart; 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife (2004); brother, William Dickerman and two sisters, Mildred Jones and Della Blecha.

Velma I. Dickerman, 87, of Arkansas City died, Thursday, June 24, 2004 in Arkansas City.
Velma was born January 19, 1917 to Frank Yarbrough and Murie (Derrington) Yarbrough in Latham, KS. She was raised by her step father, Roy Goodbread and Murie Goodbread in Arkansas City where she attended schools as a young girl.
On August 13, 1934 she married Ferrell W. Dickerman and the couple has made their home in the Arkansas City area since. The couple started a fruit and vegetable wholesale/retail business in the 40's on south Summit and moved to north Summit in 1970.. They retired in 1979.
Velma was a member of the First Baptist Church in Arkansas City. She was also active with teen town in the 50's, a china painting club and instrumental in the opening of a handicap children’s school in Arkansas City.
Velma is survived by her husband, Ferrell W. Dickerman of the home; two daughters, Dixie Kincaid and her husband, Humbert of San Antonio, TX and Charlotte Gee and her husband, Ron of Arkansas City; half brothers, Weldon Goodbread of Oklahoma City, OK, George Yarbrough and John Yarbrough of Missouri; half sister, Betty Roman of Moline, KS; seven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; half brothers, Henry Yarbrough and Otis Goodbread and half sister, Dorothy Goins.

Mrs. Levica Jane Schoonover 51 wife of D. L. Schoonover, died at 3:45 O'clock Monday afternoon in a local hospital following a few days illness. She was admitted to the hospital Friday. The Schoonover residence at 1525 South First Street.
Born Dec. 23, 1891 at Hopkinsville, KY. Mr. Schoonover came to Arkansas City from Kingman, Kans. 22 years ago. She was married to D. L. Schoonover in April 1913 at Kingman. She is preceded in death by daughter Verna Mae who died Feb. 24, 1928 by her mother, brother and by a sister.
Surviving relatives including her husband. Three daughters Bernice of the home, Mrs. Betty Lou Robertson and Mrs. Sadie Carpenter, both of Arkansas City, four sons Herman J. MR. HARLEY B. PARSONS
Harley Bruce Parsons, 88, passed away Monday afternoon, April 13, 2009.
He was born September 23, 1920, near Douglass, the son of Dora J. (Swanson) and Benjamin Harrison Parsons, Butler
County, Kansas. In March of 1921 the family moved to Cowley County southeast of Burden. He attended grade school
in Willow Branch and Burden graduating in 1940. He was a member of the Burden 4-H Club.
Harley worked in construction near Parsons, Kan. for a few months building a munitions plant. He returned to his family's farm, leaving it May 21,1944, when he married Barbara Briscoe at the Tisdale Methodist Church. They began their married life on a farm owned by Earl Fromm. They farmed wheat, alfalfa, ran cattle, raised chickens and sold eggs. Harley and Barbara purchased their own farm between Cambridge and Dexter and moved to it in 1949. Harley farmed, raised cattle, drilled water wells and set surface pipe for oil wells with his brother, Gleason in the 1950's.
Harley, Barbara and their daughters left the farm in 1962 and have lived in Winfield since that time. He found employment at General Electric at Strother Field where he worked for 20 yeas and six months, retiring in 1983. He was a flight line mechanic. During this time he traveled to many different airports and two foreign countries. He obtained his Airframe and Power plant (A & P) license.
He had been a private pilot since 1946.
Harley was a member of the Cambridge IOOF Lodge and was a 4-H leader with the Cambridge 4-H Club. He joined Tisdale United Methodist Church and later transferred to the First United Methodist Church. He cared for several older friends over the years.
Harley had several interests: Flying different planes to many states for visits with people and seeing sights; spending many winters in warm climates, mostly in the Rio Grande Valley in a motor home. He really enjoyed riding a motorcycle alone or with a group; he also liked reading his magazines. He belonged to Chapter Q of the Golden Wing Road Riders and the Gray-Haired Motorcycle Gang Clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of the home, a daughter, Treva Andrea and her husband Ron of Glen Allen, Va., a son-in-law, John Buchanan of Springfield, Mo., grandchildren, Wendell Andrea and his wife Kristin of Mechanicsville, Va., Eric Andrea of Colorado Springs, Colo., Teresa Buchanan of Fremont, Calif., David Buchanan and his wife Jodi of Bentonville, Ark., ; five great-grandchildren, Carrie, Bryce, Lea, Ava and Matthew.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Virginia Buchanan, his parents, and four siblings, baby Lucille Parsons, Wilma Parsons Sanburn Ankrom, Gleason Parsons and Raymond Parsons. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 18, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment followed at Highland Cemetery.

Harvey John Whiteman, second son of seven children born to Albert L. and Alvira Tomlin Whiteman, was born September 5, 1887, near Atlanta, Kansas, and passed away December 16, 1970, in the Broken Bow Community Hospital at the age of 83 years, three months and 11 days.
The early part of his life was spent on his parents farm near Atlanta, Kansas. He attended school and church in the Timber Creek Community. On September 23, 1907, he was united in marriage to Nellie B. Simmons at Winfield, Kansas. Seven children were born to this union. They farmed near Atlanta, Kans., until 1909 when they moved to Nebraska, homesteading in Brown county.
In 1916 they moved to Broken Bow, Nebraska where he ran the livery stable until 1918 when he built the first auction barn. He was connected with acution sales and cattle buying until the early 1930's. At that time he started ranching in Blaine county near Dunning, Nebr. He was in that business until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nellie Whiteman, on June 19, 1942; two sons Harold Ross and Adam Albert, who died in infancy; on daughter, Mrs. Robert Bernece Brong, on October 29, 1965.
On November 15, 1952, he was married to Myrtle Durrear of Dunning Nebr. She passed away July 24, 1969. Survivors include four daughters Mrs. Dan (Elsie) Foley of Merna, Nebr., Mrs. Arnold (Twila) Will of Schofield, Wisc., Mrs. Jed (Glenora) Mooney of Mason City, Nebr., Mrs. Max (Bonnie) Doggett of Merna; one adopted son, Donald Whiteman of Broken Bow; twenty-five grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grantchildren; one brother Wiley Whiteman, Wichita, Kans; one sister Mrs. Malissa Carrothers of Mulvane, Kans; step-mother, Maude Whiteman of Wichita, Kans.; and a hald-sister Mrs. Iva Markley of Atlanta, Kansas.
Funeral services were held Dec. 19 by Rev. Merlin
Nelson of the Open Bible church of Dunning at the Grover Brother Chapel in broken Bow. Musical selection were sung
by Mrs. Evelyn Smets and Everett Nelson, accompanied by Sherrie Kennedy. Pallbearers were Verne Johnson, Ted Wirz,
Phil Van-Neste, Kenneth Stithem, Alvin Daily and Louis Holeman. Interment was in the Broken Bow Cemetery. (1970,

Beulah Craig Dies Sunday
Mrs. Beulah Craig, wife of the Rev. John Craig, former pastor of the First Baptist Church here, died Sunday in St. Joseph hospital, Milwaukee, Wis.
Mr. Craig served the local church from 1939 to 1943. He is director of the Christian Center at Milwaukee, a Baptist center to which Mrs. Craig was devoting her time.
Funeral services will be held in Arkansas City Friday afternoon and the Jess Rindt Mortuary will be in charge. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family has requested no flowers be sent but contributions be made to the Christian Center.
Mrs. Craig was born at Barnard and had degrees from Bethany college at Lindsborg; Ottawa university, Ottawa, and Colgate university. Besides Mr. Craig, she is survived by a son, Bill. (The Arkansas City Daily Traveler, March 3, 1952, submitted by Joel Craig)

Funeral services for Mrs. John Craig, former resident who died in Milwaukee Sunday will be conducted here at the First Baptist Church Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Alfred Jeffries of Wauwautosa, Wis., a classmate of Rev. Craig, officiating. He will be assisted by Rev. G. R. Gross. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Atchison Native is Car Victim
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The Rev. John A. Craig, a native of Atchison, Kan., was killed Thursday in an automobile accident.
Craig, 59, was executive secretary of the Monroe Baptist Association of Rochester and vicinity. He had been here since 1963, previously serving as executive secretary and regional minister for the Boston Baptist Bethel City Mission Society.

Former Minister Here Killed in N. Y. Traffic Crash
Funeral arrangements in Arkansas City are pending for Rev. John A. Craig, 64, Rochester, N. Y., who was killed in an automobile accident near his home Thursday.
At the time of his death he was executive secretary of the Rochester and Monroe County Baptist Association, and had recently returned from the American Baptist Association convention held in San Francisco, Calif., the latter part of May.
He was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Arkansas City from March 1, 1939, until his resignation in March of 1943, at which time he entered the U.S. Navy to serve a tour as Navy chaplain. Before coming to Arkansas City, Rev. Craig was associated with the Christian Center in Kansas City.
He was born Nov. 13, 1905 in Atchison, and married to Miss Beulah Johnson, June 29, 1932. She preceded him in death on March 2, 1952. Rev. Craig awas pastor of the Hulburt Baptist Church in Milwaukee, Wis., at the time of her death.
Rev. Craig graduated from Ottawa University, Ottawa and attended the Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, N. Y., where he received his bachelor of divinity degree. After serving in the Navy when he left Arkansas city, he was affiliated with theMilwaukee Christian Center in Milwaukee, and later was executive director of the Milwaukee Christian Center. He was then transferred to Boston, and then to Rochester.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of the home at 760 Penfield Grove, Rochester 25, N. Y., who was on the staff of Baptist Training School in Chicago, conducted guidance at Boston University and held a guidance-counseling position in Rochester, N. Y., a son, William A. Craig, a recent graduate of the Boston Medical School, Boston, Mass., a sister, Mrs. Nancy Smith, who lives in Montana; and a nephew, Ernest Smith who also lives in Montana.

Funeral services for Rev. John A. Craig, 59, who died, June 17 in a traffic accident at Rochester, N. Y., were at 7 p.m. Sunday at Rochester. Committal services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Edward E. Franklin, pastor of the First Baptist Church and long time friend of the Rev. Mr. Craig, officiating.
He had served as pastor of the First Baptist Church here from 1939 to 1943. He was executive secretary of the Rochester and Monroe county Baptist Assn.
Pallbearers were A. C. Foster, Eugene Waltrip, W. H. Ireland, Ivan Upson, Clarence Calkins and Ora J. Sherbon.
Rev. Mr. Franklin has announced a John A. Craig Memorial Fund. Members of the church or community who wish to contribute a memorial gift may send it to the First Baptist Church office. MRS. MARY E. BISHOP
Mary Ellen Bishop, 87, of Burden, Kan., passed away Jan. 22, 2010, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Born August 17, 1922, in Comanche, Okla., Mary was the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Effie Louise (Purtell) Brown.
She was raised and educated in Duncan, Okla., and graduated from Duncan High School.
She married Lyle Franklin Wham on June 21, 1941, in Walters, Okla. To this union, four children were born. The
couple later divorced.
Mary and Clinton Ralph Bishop married on Jan. 27, 1964, in Wichita Falls, Texas. They moved with their three children
to the Green Ranch in Latham, Kan., where Mary helped work on the ranch and was a homemaker. In 1992, they retired
and moved to Burden, Kan.
Mary enjoyed sewing, quilting, fishing, photo albums and cooking for cowboys and family. She especially loved spending
time with her grandchildren, taking them to the One Stop for treats, making Barbie Doll clothes and taking them
fishing.
Her hushand, Clinton Bishop, died Sept. 9, 2001. In addition, she was preceded in death by her parents, her son,
Lyle Franklin Wham III, her daughter, Sandra Kay Wham, three brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include her son, Kyle Wham and wife,
Shari, Burden; her daughter, Judy Lynn Wham, Las Cruces, N.M.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at Duncan Cemetery in Duncan, Okla.
A memorial has been established in Mary's name with the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through

He died in Salem, KS. In March, 1885. The children Sarah Naomi Boone, Sue Boone, Johnny Boone, and youngest
son Tommy were all in California near Hanford and Armona. He is my Great , Great Grandfather. (March 11, 1885,
