FRIEND--In Girard, Jan 2d, 1898, of heart trouble. Mrs. Mahala Friend, aged 69 years.
The deceased was a sister of James, Jacob and Joseph A. Morgan and had been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. R.
S. Everett in Crawford township. She had recently been visiting with James Morgan and family, but Saturday evening
went to the home of Jacob Morgan to remain over night. She arose early Sunday morning and stepped to the window
to see if it was daylight, when she was stricken with heart failure and fell prostrate upon the floor and in a
few minutes was dead. She had enjoyed reasonably good health and her death was very unexpected. She was a member
of the Methodist Church for fifty-five years.
The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church, Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock, Pastor W. T. York of
Farlington officiating.

MORGAN-- Near Porterville, Kas., Aug 3d, 1912, Jacob Morgan, aged 81 years, 0 months and 26 days.
Jacob Morgan was born in Ohio Oct. 17, 1830 and married Minerva Hedges March 7, 1854. Eight children were born
to the union, six of whom are living. Those surviving are Mrs. Carrie Hedden, of near Porterville; Samuel C. Morgan
of Longmont, Colorado; Amos Morgan of Colorado Springs, Colorado; W. N. Morgan of Walnut; Miss Clara Morgan, who
kept house for her father, and Mrs. Ida Mary Furry of near Savonburg.
The family moved from Ohio to Illinois in 1865 and from there to Kansas in 1869. For quite a number of years he
occupied a farm north of Girard, moving from there to the city, and in 1903 to a farm near Porterville. Mrs. Morgan
died March 18th, 1881 and was buried in the Girard cemetery.
Mr. Morgan joined the M.E. church in early life and was an earnest church worker for over sixty years.
The funeral services took place at Walnut Monday at 2 o’clock p.m. Pastor Geo. E. Kitchen officiating. The body
was then shipped to Girard and interment took place in the Girard cemetery at Girard.
In addition to his children, four brothers survive him; Pastor George Morgan of Attica, Kas., Joseph Morgan of
Beulah; James Morgan of Girard; and William Morgan of Howard, Kas.

Walnut-- William Nelson Morgan, 86, died at 6:30 o’clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Warzel,
723 Clark St., in Parsons, following an illness of two years. He had been critically ill since June.
He was born in Ohio, Nov. 5, 1864. At the age of five, he moved with his parents to Crawford county where he spent
the remainder of his life. He had lived since 1890 in Walnut where he was engaged in the jewelry business until
his health failed. He married Olive Plum near Walnut, May 3, 1893 and she survives.
Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by a son, Ernest, of Wichita, three grandsons and a great grandson,
and two sisters, Clara Morgan and Mrs. May Furry, both of Stark. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a
sister.
Mr. Morgan was a member of Modern Woodmen lodge, and attended the Methodist church at Walnut.
The funeral service arrangements are incomplete. The body is at Pierce Funeral home at Erie.

WESLEY C. HESS
Wesley C. Hess, 86, of 606 Oakcrest, died at 8:35 a.m. Thursday, February 1, 1996 at the Medicalodge South. He
had been ill the past six months.
He was born Jan. 10, 1910 at Walnut, to John A. and Myra Friend Hess. He attended schools at Walnut. He came to
Pittsburg in 1928 and attended Pittsburg State University. He lived in the community most of his life.
He married Arleen Hunter on June 17, 1937 at Walnut. She preceded him in death on May 26, 1984.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a former president of the National Bank of Pittsburg and was on the board of directors. He also served on
the board of directors of Bank IV.
He was a member of the First United Methodist church, the Benjamin A. Fuller Post No. 64 of the American Legion,
a charter member of the Crestwood Country Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Pittsburg State University Foundation, and
the Elks Lodge No. 412.
Survivors include two sons, Dan Wesley Hess of San Francisco and Allen Hunter Hess of Houston; two sisters, Anne
Perkins of Olathe, and Corinne Church of Osawatomie; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother Earl Hess.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist church, with Pastor David Weible officiating. Burial
will be at Highland Park Cemetery, with flag-folding services conducted at graveside by the Benjamin A. Fuller
Post No. 64 of the Pittsburg American Legion.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Brenner Chapel. Friends may call at the chapel after
10 a.m. Sunday.

Rolla L. Morgan
Rolla L. Morgan, 75, died at 6:35 a.m. today in the Labette County Medical Center where he had been a patient since
Feb. 10. His home was at 32 Birch.
Born July 18, 1894 at Girard, he grew to manhood in the Walnut area. He first came to Parsons in 1944. In 1960
he moved to Kentucky and then returned here in 1967. Before his retirement he worked as a heavy equipment operator
in road construction.
On Nov 6, 1918 he was married to Orpha McDaniel at Girard and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Roy Morgan,
28 Birch; a daughter, Mrs. Elda Hunter, 1401 Washington and three grandchildren. A son, Alvin Glen was killed April
28, 1944 in Europe during World War II.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Burris-Wall Funeral Home, conducted by Victor L. Trower. Burial
will be in Rosedale Cemetery near Hepler.

LOIS WARZEL
Lois Warzel, 91, of Bartlesville, died at 12:12 a.m. Thursday in the Geriatrics Division of the Jane Phillips hospital.
Mrs. Warzel was born March 26, 1894 at Walnut, Kan., to William and Olive (Plum) Morgan. She grew up and received
her education in Walnut graduating from school there in 1912. She went on to attend college at Pittsburg, Kan.,
and following, she taught school for five years. She later worked for the Parson Sun newspaper. On June 5, 1917
she married Fred J. Warzel and they made their home in Burlingame, Kan., and Bayard, Neb, where he was active in
the lumber industry. They later made their home in Hyattville, Kan., moving to Parsons, Kan. where they resided
for over 30 years until coming to Bartlesville in 1977. Mrs. Warzel had been a resident of the Geriatrics Division
of Jane Phillips hospital for the past several years. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist church at Parsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred on Jan. 26, 1973.
She is survived by two sons: Morgan Warzel and Lawrence A. Warzel, both of Bartlesville; five grandchildren and
four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death one brother, Ernest William Morgan in 1966.
Funeral services for Mrs. Warzel will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel with Russell
Cheatham of the First United Methodist church in Bartlesville officiating. Following the services Mrs. Warzel will
be removed to Walnut, Kan where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the old Walnut Cemetery with Gerald M. Pringle
of the Walnut United Methodist church officiating with interment to follow. Funeral services and interment are
under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home

MORGAN, JAMES

James Morgan was born in Harrison county, Ohio, January 27th, 1836 and moved to Illinois in 1856. He was married
to Anna M. Friend Oct. 28th, 1857, who died July 20th, 1898. He went to Missouri in 1869 and came to Kansas in
March 1872, locating on a farm in Sheridan township, where he resided until March 1888, when he removed to Girard,
which was his home until his death.
Ten children were born to the union, eight of whom survive, viz.; George W. Morgan, Chanute; Mrs. Sarah Woodling
and Mrs. Mona Shaw, Girard; Mrs. Alice Wellman, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Eva Bannon, Riverside, California; Mrs.
B.L. Clark, Buffalo, Wyoming and Mary and Josephine Morgan, who are at home in Girard.
He entered the Union Army Aug 13th, 1861, enlisting in Co C. 14th Illinois Cavalry and served 1 year and 2 months,
being discharged Oct 9th 1862. He participated in the battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh, being wounded at Shiloh,
April 6th 1862.
During his life time he served in a number of responsible positions and acted as police judge and justice of the
peace of Girard for a number of years.
The funeral service took place in the M.E. church of which he was a member, Wednesday afternoon, Jan 7th. with
E. J. Gardner officiating. The members of Gen Bailey Post No 49, G.A.R., attended the funeral in a body and had
charge of the services at the grave.
All of the children were present at the funeral and also Mrs. Geo. W. Morgan and son Loyd Morgan of Chanute, and
Mr. and Mrs. J. Nowland of Cherokee.
Thirty-two grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren survive him.

ROY WOODLING
Girard-- Roy Woodling, 84, of Girard, died at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Girard Hospital where he was admitted
Sunday.
He was born March 15, 1891, near Cherokee, the son of Cory P. and Sarah Morgan Woodling. His family had homesteaded
in the area more than 100 years ago.
He was married to Martha Ann Price July 3, 1918 in Columbus. She survives at the home.
Mr. Woodling was a farmer and a stockman. He raised registered Angus cattle in the Cyclone area southwest of Girard,
and later in the Cherokee area.
He was a member of the United Methodist church of Girard and the American Angus Association.
After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Girard.
Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Anna Richardson, Topeka; Mrs. Marie Kine, Wichita; and Mrs. Pearl Sprague,
Aurora, Mo and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the W.D. Smith Chapel in Girard with Wilbur Purvis officiating, assisted
by Cliff McCall.

MONA C. SHAW DIES
Mrs. Mona Catherine Shaw, 84, a resident of Girard since 1884, died at the Girard hospital Saturday night,(October
13, 1951) after an illness of about two weeks.
Born May 2, 1867, at Springfield, Ill., Mrs. Shaw came to Kansas at the age of two with her parents. They moved
to Girard in 1884. That same year she married John Shaw at Cherokee, Oct. 12, 1884. Mr. Shaw died September 19,
1932 in Girard.
Mrs. Shaw was a member of the Girard Christian church which she joined in 1918. She was also a member of the Rebekah
lodge here and of the Girard G.A.R. circle.
Survivors include four sons; George W. of El Paso; Clarence of Oakland; Frank of Girard; and Ralph of Kansas City;
and seven daughters; Mrs. Anna Akins of Rockford, Ill; Mrs. Nona Donaldson of Independence, Ks; Mrs. Nell Prine
of Kansas City; Mrs. Eva McAlister of Pasadena, Ca; Mrs. Maggie Browning, Mrs. Ada Esken and Mrs. Bernice McGaughey,
all of Kansas City; two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Morris of Oceanside, CA; and Mrs. Stella Clark, Buffalo, Wyoming;
30 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchilden.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Dorsey chapel with Ralph G. Culler, officiating. Burial in
the Girard cemetery.

J.A. MORGAN DIES in CALIFORNIA
Mrs. Elizabeth Everitt received word of the death of Joseph Morgan, Saturday, April 22, at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. R. K. Alexander at Tarzana, Calif. Burial was in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Mr. Morgan was ninety years of age. He was born and reared in Lancaster, Ohio. Later he moved to Girard, where
at one time he served as assessor. In 1918 he moved to Idaho, locating at Kimberly where he engaged in farming
for several years. Later he moved to Twin Falls.
Mrs. Morgan preceded him in death two years ago. Mr. Morgan was a lifelong member of the Methodist church.
Survivors are a son and three daughters, seven grandchildren and nine great-granchildren.
Note: Joseph A. Morgan was a brother to James and Jacob Morgan, and Mahala Morgan Friend who were residents of
Crawford County.

ATVAREZ, FRED
Pittsburg, Kan., Aug. 15 - Fred Atvarez, a fifteen
year old boy, accompanied by a playmate, Harry Tomelty, went into an abandoned coal shaft about 40 feet deep, northwest
of this place, to regain their hats which had blown therein. They felt the effects of smoke damp and the Tomelty
boy climbed out by a ladder, but his companion failed to do so. An alarm was given, but so foul was the air that
rescuers could not descend. When the boy was hauled out by a hook he was dead. (Topeka Weekly Capital, August 16,

DAY, HENRY
Henry Day, a nineteen year old boy, after a protracted
spree was found dead this morning on a pile of rags in a junk shop in West Pittsburg. A coroner's jury found in
his pocket a box of "rough-on-rats" and found a verdict that he came to his death by taking poison with

Pittsburg, Kas., June 21 - Mrs. James Montee, living
near Pittsburg was found dead in her bed when the family arose this morning. She went to bed in her usual health,
