BIOGRAPHIES FOR HAMILTON COUNTY, KANSAS

WILLIAM CHARLES DAUGHERTY

William Charles Daugherty, druggist and banker, was born at Ottumwa, Iowa, July 2, 1876, and for fifty-two years has resided in Kansas. His father, Anthony Scott Daugherty, was born at Columbus, Indiana, June 9, 1849, and is a blacksmith. His mother, whose father was born in Germany, and whose mother was a native of Virginia, was born at Peoria, Illinois, April 21, 1855, and died at Brookville, Kansas, January 25, 1931. She taught in Saline County 1873-74.

Educated first in the Brookville public schools, William Charles Daugherty attended Brookville High School two years, and for a like period was employed by Dr. W. E. Fowler there as a drug clerk. He was in the employ of the Semple Drug Company for eight years, then, in October, 1906, entered the drug business for himself.

His store, known as Daugherty’s Drug Store is still in operation and he is the owner also of the City Drug Store at Syracuse. Mr. Daugherty is president and a director of the First National Bank of that city.

A Republican, he was candidate for state representative in 1926. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Industrial Club (former president), the Rotary Club (first president, 1929), the Red Cross, the Syracuse School Board (director), and the Masons. He is past master of his lodge, and a member of the Consistory, Commandery, and Shrine.

On February 3, 1901, Mr. Daugherty was married to Mary Diehl at Brookville. She was born there April 15, 1879 and died at Syracuse, April 2, 1929. There are two children, William S., born July 25, 1907 who married Virginia Walter, and Robert M. July 14, 1909, who married Mildred Johnson. Both are graduates in pharmacy from Kansas University, Robert now being a medical student there. Residence: Syracuse. HARRY FORD

Harry Ford, merchant, was born at Syracuse, Kansas, March 9, 1889, son of James and Gay (Jackson) Ford. The father born in Illinois, May 11, 1858, moved to Syracuse in 1886. He was in the hardware and implement business at Syracuse until his death there on January 16, 1916.

His wife, Gay, was born at Sacramento, California, January 27, 1861, daughter of Colonel G. W. Jackson. He was a soldier who saw service on the plains, and in the Mexican and Civil Wars.

Educated in the public schools of Syracuse, Harry Ford, later attended business college at Denver, Colorado. He was married on March 29, 1914, to Zelma Fay Friend, at Las Anismas, Colorado. She was born at Springfield, Colorado, May 11, 1895 and is now active in the Order of Eastern Star and the P. E. O. Sisterhood. There are two children, Harry Ford, Jr., born October 18, 1920; and Harrison, January 27, 1926.

Since 1921 Mr. Ford has been vice president and director of the First National Bank. He is a member of the Hamilton County Commercial Club, and the Masons (32nd degree, Scottish Rite, Shrine). He is a Protestant. His favorite sports are troutfishing and hunting. He is a former member of the Rotary Club. Residence: Syracuse. FRANK M. JAMES

Frank M. James, editor and publisher of the Syracuse Journal, was born at Boulder, Colorado, December 10, 1877, son of Henry Albert and Louise (Mays) James. He has resided in Kansas for more than fifty-five years.

His father, born at chesterfield, Ohio, August 5, 1845, served in the 9th Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War, enlisting at the age of 16 at Rensslaer, Indiana. He died at El Dorado, Kansas, February 19, 1919. His ancestry was traced to William James, a Welchman, who came to Portsmouth, New Hampshire with the Mason Settlement. Reuben Bean James, grandfather of Frank, came to Kansas a pioneer Baptist minister, and died in Crawford County, in 1877. Louise May was born in Linn County and died at Pittsburg, in 1882.

Frank M. James attended public school, learned the printer’s trade and has since followed the newspaper business. He is half owner of the Hotel Ames, and a leader in city paving and other public improvements. He is a Republican and a member of the Hamilton County Industrial Club. His favorite sports are hunting and fishing and his hobby gardening.

On November 1, 1905, he was married to Ethel Violet Dickerson at Eureka. Her parents were Kansas pioneers, and her father, and six uncles, were soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War. There are two children living, one deceased; Albert, born October 26, 1906, married Rowena P. Lockridge and is associated with his father, Eunice, October 7, 1909, who married Russell V.
