Dr. Franklin W. Koons was born March 30th, 1872 in Wayne County, Ohio and passed away at the Halstead Hospital on April 18, 1951.

He was the oldest son of Simon W. and Minirva Grady Koons and came with his parents to Kansas in the year of 1877 and settle on a farm near Sterling. He attended the public schools in Rice county and Sterling College. In his teens he studied medicine under the preceptorship of the late Dr. P. P. Truehart. Later he attended the Kansas City Medical College, which affiliated with the Kansas University, from which institution he was graduated in the year of 1898.

He was married to Albeta Talbott in 1899. To this union were born two daughters – Kathryn and Helen.

He established a practice in Nickerson, Kansas and during the twenty-two years of his residence there he took an active part in school, civic and Masonic affairs. In 1930 he became a member of the staff of the Herzler Clinic which position he held until he was compelled to retire on account of ill health in 1917.

Dr. Koons is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alberta Koons of Halstead, daughter Kathryn Snook, one grandson – Patrick Koons Snook of Gencoe, Illinois and one brother – Mr. B. C. Koons of Little River, Kansas. Helen passed away in 1937.

Dr. Koons was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, being a member of the Halstead Presbyterian Church at the time of his death. He was active in all civic affairs in Halstead before his ill health and always interested in everything that meant better things for the community. He was a member of the Masonic order since 1904 and a past president of the Harvey County Medical association; the last few years being an honorary member of the group.

During his forty-nine years experience as a family physician he has shared the problems of families and individuals who were confronted with serious illness, accident, or misfortune. As a sincere doctor he was often faced with the hopelessness of the task, and the futility of his best efforts. Then is when he had to rely on a power and guidance greater than his own. Then he had to be able to create confidence, establish hope and show a real understanding of the values of life. For these things, Dr. Koons will be long remembered in the Halstead community. For this, he has received the appreciation, the gratitude and the loyalty of the people whom he has helped.

Memorial services for Dr. Koons were held in the First Presbyterian Church of Halstead at 2:30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, April 21, 1951 with pastor, Rev. Richard S. Klein as the officiating minister. Mrs. W. D. Nelligan and Mrs. Kenneth Bitikofer sang: “In The Garden.” Mrs. Nelligan also sant: “The Prayer Perfect.” Miss Eda Schowalter was the accompanist and organist. Her selections were: “Echo Bells,” “Melody at Sunset” – Wilson, “O Savior Kind” by Shure; “Legende” – Frind and “Prayer” by Heller.

Graveside services were conducted by the Halstead Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 46 with George Stephenson giving the lecture. The Masonic group and the members of the P.E.O. were honorary groups.
