Wichita died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004.
The son of Andrew Jackson and Clara Edna Nichols Whitaker, he was born Dec. 29, 1908, in rural Lyon County. His
wife, the former Helen Lillian Silfies, died in 2002.
Mr. Whitaker retired after working as a contract administrator for Boeing in Wichita. He previously was an accountant
for the former John Deere Plow Co. in Wichita.
He is survived by a son, Roger Whitaker of Emporia; a daughter, Sharon Hilyard of O'Fallon, Ill.; a brother, Robert
Whitaker of Dunlap; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the College Hill United Methodist Church at Wichita. The burial
service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Sunnyside Cemetery near Americus.

formerly of rural Americus, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at the Council Grove Healthcare Center.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Council Grove Chapel, where
visitation is scheduled from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. The family will meet friends from to 8 p.m. that evening. Burial
will be in the Sunny Side Cemetery in Lyon County.
She was born to Everard and Jessie Rutledge Cowles on Sept. 2, 1925, in the Four Mile Community. She attended Spring
Creek School and graduated from Dunlap High School.
She married Kelcie Shelor Harder on Jan. 2, 1949, in Dunlap. He died Nov. 13, 1998.
She was a member of the Dunlap United Methodist Church and a past president of the Sunnyside Club.
Mrs. Harder is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Reust of Bushong, Vickie Nabors of Dwight and Dorothy Pate
of Americus; a sister, Hester Hedgespeth of Dunlap; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A sister, Phyllis Kendall, died earlier.
Mrs. Harder's family has requested memorial contributions to Hand in Hand Hospice. Gifts may be sent in care of

EMPORIA ---Ivan Odell Harder, 78, Emporia, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at an Emporia hospital.
Mr. Harder farmed in Lyon County the past 57 years.
He was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Americus, the son of Herman Gus and Eatha O'Dell Shelor Harder.
Mr. Harder was a life member of the Lyon County Farm Bureau and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie
No. 2587 in Emporia.
He married Marcella Laurine Feik on June 4, 1944, in Emporia. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Ivan Odell Harder Jr., Shawnee Mission; two daughters, Sandra K. Lyon and Sheila
R. Venning, both of Emporia; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Burial will be at Sunnyside
Cemetery in Americus. Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at her home, 22 S. Neosho St.

She was born in Salina on March 18, 1938, the daughter of William and Bertha Hanson Deckwa. She married John R.
Calaman on March 3, 1959, in Hebron, Neb. He survives, at home.
Mrs. Calaman, who was a homemaker, is survived by three sons, Gil Calaman of Chapman, Robert Calaman of St. Petersburg,
Fla., and John W. Calaman of Emporia, and a daughter, Alvarine Calaman, also of Emporia. A sister, Jean Boyd of
Topeka, also survives, as do eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cook was a longtime farmer.
The son of Albert P. and Ida Mae Marsh Cook, he was born March 24, 1917, at Americus.
Mr. Cook is survived by two sisters, Lois McKeever of Wichita and Barbara Jones of Mulvane. One sister, Halene
Gibson, died earlier.
The internment service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Americus Cemetery at Americus. Mr. Cook was cremated.

80, a longtime resident of Argonia, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Wellington.
Mr. Gosser was an administrator of Wichita public schools before he retired.
The son of James and Viola White Gosser, he was born Feb. 5, 1924, at Plymouth. He married Wilma Knight on Dec.
28, 1948, in Americus. She died earlier.
Mr. Gosser is survived by one son, Michael Gosser of Wichita; four daughters, Marcia Gosser and Rita White, both
of Argonia, Pamela Thompson of Peabody and Cindy Martin of Trenton, Ill.; one brother, Bill Gosser of Emporia;
five sisters, Dorothy Carpenter and Joan Baysinger, both of Emporia, Nancy Wyatt of Plymouth, Rosetta Clark of
Cokato, Minn., and Patty Vogts of Ostego, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

AMERICUS --- Glen W. Gulde, 84, Americus, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at an Emporia nursing home.
Mr. Gulde farmed near Americus.
He was born April 21, 1917, in Americus, the son of Jacob "Jake" and Emma Weimer Gulde. He was a lifelong
resident of the Americus area.
Mr. Gulde was a member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include a brother, Carl Gulde, Houston; and a sister, Florence Ruff, Newton.
Graveside memorial services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the Americus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
Thursday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Cremation will follow the visitation.

Miss Henning was a self-employed painter for 30 years.
The daughter of John M. and Virginia A. Roe Henning, she was born Jan. 7, 1955, in Emporia.
Miss Henning is survived by one son, Colter John Henning, and one daughter, Teighlor Lynn Henning, both of the
home; her mother, Virginia A. Roberts of Americus; four sisters, Lynn J. Henning, Lori R. Schultz and Lisa Preisner,
all of Americus, and Letitia K. Cross of Apache Junction, Ariz.; three brothers, Joshua B. Henning of Americus,
John C. Henning of Lawrence and Zachary B. Henning of Dublin, Texas; and her companion, Jerry Wells of Americus.
A sister, Lou Anne Henning, died July 28, 1996. Her father, John H. Henning and her stepfather, Clair Roberts,
also died earlier.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bud Tuxhorn

Mrs. Jones was a school psychologist for the Wellington, Derby and Haysville schools before she retired.
The daughter of Albert and Gladys Brewer Cook, she was born Dec. 31, 1936, in Emporia. She was married and divorced.
Mrs. Jones is survived by two daughters, Cathy Beverage of Mulvane and Lorianne Earley of Aurora, Colo.; two sons,
Scott Jones of Wichita and Jeffrey of Alto, Ga.; a sister, Lois McKeever of Wichita; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church at Derby. The graveside service will
be at 2:30 p.m. in Americus Cemetery, Americus.

PRAIRIE VILLAGE - Americus native Robert E. "Gene" Laughlin died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at his home in
Prairie Village. He was 84.
The son of Chester and Katie Staley Laughlin, he was born on a farm near Americus. He graduated from Americus High
School and earned an accounting degree from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia.
Mr. Laughlin served during World War II with the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He married Phyllis Harris on
Feb. 1, 1948, at Emporia.
Mr. Laughlin worked in management for International Harvester Credit Corp. After 30 years, he retired in October
1978. He was a member of Old Mission United Methodist Church and the American Legion Dwight Cowles Post.
He is survived by his wife and daughter, Marjorie Laughlin, both of the home; a brother, Wayne Laughlin of Eagle,
Idaho; a niece and four nephews, including Richard Evans of Emporia. Two infant children, Steven Eugene and Jeanne
Marie, and a sister, Dorothy Best, died earlier.
The funeral service for Mr. Laughlin will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Old Mission United Methodist Church. Burial
will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Americus Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.

Mrs. Lickly, a resident of the Vintage Manor and formerly of Holiday Estates, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at the
manor.
Linda Marie Bailes, the daughter of Roy L. and Genevieve M. Davis Bailes, was born Sept. 15, 1945, at Sharon. She
grew up in Medicine Lodge. She attended cosmetology school in Pratt.
She married Frankie L. Cary. They were divorced. She married William G. Lickly on July 19, 1991, in Junction City.
He died June 5, 1994.
She was a homemaker. Earlier, she was a nurse's aide at a nursing home in Stafford. She moved from Wichita to Emporia
in the mid-1980s.
Mrs. Lickly was a member of the Americus Presbyterian Church and most recently attended the Church of God of Prophecy
in Emporia.
She is survived by two daughters, Melody Gryner of Emporia and Karen M. Martin of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; two sisters,
Karen S. Hudson of Emporia and Judith K. Ritchie of Great Bend; and one brother, Rex L. Bailes Sr. of Emporia.
Her parents died earlier, as did two brothers, Billy Bob Bailes and Richard Roy Bailes, and two sisters, Betty
Lou Edmonds and Rita Mae Bailes.

Hobart E. "Sonny" Minor Sr., on June 1, 1962, at Emporia. He survives.
Mrs. Minor is also survived by one son, Hobart E. "Buster" Minor Jr., of Americus; two daughters, Tonya
Lacey of Allen and Rose Ann Irvin of Americus; two brothers, Howard Wastell of Overland Park and Lee Wastell of
Las Vegas, Nev.; and eight grandchildren. A son, Kenneth Minor; and her parents died earlier.

Franklin C. Myers of rural Americus died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008,
at his home. He was 84.
The son of Ralph P. and Carrie L. McElfresh Myers, he was born Nov. 26, 1923, at Americus. He married Gladys L.
Johnson on June 23, 1946, at Dunlap.
Mr. Myers was a dairy farmer; he retired in 1983, 40 years after getting his first dairy heifer in 1943. After
his retirement, Mr. Myers drove a school bus for USD 253 from 1983 to 1992. He also operated a home greenhouse
for 25 years.
He was a member and elder of Americus Presbyterian Church, life member of the Dairy Shrine Club of America and
Garderners of America, member of Emporia Gardeners of Americus, National Brown Swiss Association and Kansas Brown
Swiss Association and a charter member of the Americus Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife founded the Liberty
4-H Club in Americus.
Mr. Myers served 10 years on the USD 251 school board, and also served on the board of directors organization board
of Rural Water District No. 1 and the organizational board for the first Americus Days event. He served 32 years
as superintendent for Kansas All Breeds Junior Dairy Show, from 1967 to 1999.
He received an award of appreciation from the Kansas All Breeds Junior Dairy Show and was named the Americus Chamber

Mr. Myers is survived by his wife of the home; four sons, Gary Myers, Gerald Myers, Phillip Myers, all of Americus;
and Howard Myers of Overbrook; a sister, Harriett McCormick of Englewood, Colo; 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren,
13 great-granchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Clifford Myers and Herbert Myers, and one sister, Ruth Worrel, died earlier.
The Rev. Brenda Ulrich of Americus Presbyterian Church will conduct the funeral service for Mr. Myers at 10 a.m.
Wednesday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Burial will be in Americus Cemetery.
The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Marjorie I. Nyhan, 80,
Naples, Fla., and formerly of Americus died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Jones Health Center of Emporia Presbyterian
Manor.
Marjorie I. Moore, the daughter of John B. and Erma E. White Moore, was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Americus. She was
a real estate broker and earlier had worked for Hallmark Cards in Emporia.
Mrs. Nyhan is survived by her husband, James J. Nyhan of Naples, Fla.; a son, Gary L. Braynard of Emporia; a daughter,
Sharon L. Erickson of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a brother, Ronald Moore of Americus; a sister, Shirley Bentley of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.; two granddaughters; four great-granddaughters; one stepgrandson; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Charter Funerals-Emporia Chapel. Burial will be in Americus
Cemetery at Americus.

Hamilton, 81, retired
Gas Department employee for Kansas Power and Light for 24 years, died Oct. 7, 2006. Born Nov. 23, 1924 to Fred
and Lydia Haworth Pierce at Americus, he married Roberta J. Williams at Rogers, Ark. on June 19, 1953. He was a
member of the First Congregational Church, Emporia, and served in the U.S. Army in the 754th Field Artillery Battalion
in WWII. Preceded by his parents; and brother, Charles Pierce. Survivors: wife, Roberta; daughters, Debbie Wilson
and Sherry Nolan, both of Emporia; brother, Jim Pierce of Wichita; sisters, Betty Goff of Perry, IA, Lucille Davee
of Wichita; grandchildren, Chris Wilson of New York, NY, Jenni Wilson of Castro Valley, CA, Haley Pierce, Matt
and Sam Nolan, all of Emporia. Service 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, First Congregational Church. Interment: Americus Cemetery,
Americus. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Girl and Boy Scouts of Emporia, or Salvation Army in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett

and treasurer's offices, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998. Service 11 a.m. Saturday, First United Methodist Church.
