BAILEY, WILLIS J. ~ WEEDE, K. IDA

Gov. Bailey to Wed

Promised to if Elected and Will Marry a Widow Today

Topeka, Kan., June 9, - Gov. Willis J. Bailey, whose nomination was opposed because he was a bachelor and who practically promised to marry if elected, will carry out his pledge in Kansas City tonight. He will marry Mrs K Ida Weede, a widow with two children.

This announcement was made yesterday by his secretary, Henry Borne and it came somewhat as a surprise because many of the Governor's friends thought he was going to back down. After his election there was numerous inquiries from the agricultural districts regarding the wedding, but the Governor offered no reply. Every Saturday night, however he appeared in Kansas City and took Mrs. Weede to the theatre, but of the wedding nothing was said.

He received many offers of marriage by mail, but turned them all down. Yesterday the Governor left Topeka and yesterday afternoon his secretary admitted that the wedding would be held in Kansas City tonight. Mrs. Weede is about 36 and Gov. Bailey is 40. Mrs. Weede formerly lived in Nemaha County, not far from Gov. Bailey's home. Until six months ago she was employed as a saleswoman by the Paristian Cloak Company of Kansas City. In January she gave up her place. (Pawtucket Times, June 9, 1903, page 6)
