Alfred Ross Goodwyn
Alfred Ross Goodwyn, dentist, was born on a cattle ranch in Mitchell County, Kansas, July 10, 1885, son of Arthur
Ross and Altha Jane (Wolcott) Goodwyn.
The father was born at Roorkee, on the river Jumna, British India, September 28, 1852. He came to Ottawa County
in the winter of 1871 from England and engaged as a rancher for many years. At the time of his death at Minneapolis,
November 24, 1929, he was retired.
Arthur Ross Goodwyn was the son of Major General Alfred G. Goodwyn of the Royal Bengal Engineers of the British
Army, and planned the Ganges Canal.
Altha Jane Wolcott was born at Fair Haven, Minnesota, December 11, 1859. She is the daughter of Salverster Wolcott,
a collateral relative of Henry Wolcott, who came to America from Tolland, England, in 1630. The Wolcotts have played
an important part in American history, Oliver Wolcott having been one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Thirty-six Wolcotts have been judges of the higher courts, and one has served as a member of the United States
senate.
Alfred Ross Goodwyn attended public school at Minneapolis and was graduated in 1905. For a short time he was
a student of St. John's Military School, and during the year 1906-07 attended the University of Kansas. In 1910
he was graduated from Kansas City Dental College with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. He is a member of
Delta Sigma Delta fraternity, and received high school letters and military letters in basketball, football, and
track.
Since 1910 Dr. Goodwyn has been engaged in the practice of dentistry in Minneapolis. He is a member of the American,
Kansas State, and district Dental Societies. Prior to the late war he served as first lieutenant, Company G, Second
Kansas National Guard, in the United States Army. He has been county chairman of the Citizens Military Training
Camp for four years and has served as post commander of the Minneapolis post of the American Legion.
Among Dr. Goodwyn's memberships are St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Red Cross, the Lions Club (charter member
and president, 1931), the Minneapolis Park Board, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce,
of which he has served as president, and the Nut Club at Salina. Dr. Goodwyn enjoys rifle shooting, fishing, and
hunting, and is captain of the Ottawa County rifle team. Lake Goodwyn in the state park in Ottawa County, was named
after Dr. Goodwyn in appreciation of services rendered by him in securing the park. His hobby is philately.
