HOUK, LYSANDER

The Well - Kansas Jurist Passes Away in Chicago

Special to the Capital

Newton, Kan., Feb. 12 - Lysander Houk, formerly of Hutchinson, and for ten years judge of this district, died this morning in Chicago, from paralysis. He had been an invalid for more than a year. His body will be sent to Hutchinson this evening, over the Rock Island road.

Judge Houk one of the most conscientious painstaking and able jurists who ever occupied a bench in Kansas was a native of Tennessee. He was a captain in the Confederate Army during the late war and some years after the close of the war settled in St. Louis where he practiced law. He came to Kansas in 1871 and made his home at Hutchinson for twenty years as county attorney of Reno county and in 1880 became district judge of this, the Ninth judicial district.

Two years ago his health began to "fail" and he has gradually grown worse ever since. He went to Chicago shortly after for medical treatment, but for some time his death has been imminent. (Topeka Weekly Capital, February 15, 1898, page 2)

DAVIS, FRANKIE MRS.

Hutchinson Woman Dies in Main Street Collision

Hutchinson, Kas., - The first traffic fatality in 80 days was recorded here Monday following the death of Mrs. Frankie Davis, 46, of 200 West E. Mrs. Davis died of multiple injuries while on the way to Grace hospital. It marked the second traffic fatality this year.

The victim's husband, Earl Davis, 51, was also seriously injured with broken ribs, two broken legs, a punctured lung and other possible injuries. He was taken to Grace hospital.

Charges were filed by police against James H. Dody, 21, of 1129 North Lorraine, driver of the other car.

Dody suffered a brain concussion and cuts about the head and face but he was to be released Monday from the hospital at HNAS where he was taken following the crash.

Mr. and Mrs. Davis were in the car headed east on B when it was struck from the side by Dody's automobile which was going north on Main. Dody was alone in his vehicle.

The traffic signal at the intersection was not operating at the time but a wooden sign in the center of the street lighted by a flare gave indication to motorists that signals were not working.

Impact of the crash pushed the Davis car sideways across the street in a diagonal direction and jammed it against a light post at the northeast corner of the intersection.

Investigators believed Mrs. Davis' death resulted from a head injury received when she struck the light post.

Police said witnesses indicated that Dody's car had been traveling north at an excessive rate of speed. Four witnesses estimated the speed. Four witnesses estimated the speed at above 7 miles an hour. One man who has several speeding arrests to his discredit said he has driven over 100 miles an hour and he believed Dody's car to be going at the same speed.

After the crash, the Dody car ignited and firemen were called to put out the blaze. The impact entangled the metal from the two cars so much that they had to be dragged apart with wreckers.

Traffic signals at the intersection had gone out late Sunday afternoon and were to be repaired immediately. City Electrician Dave Taylor arrived at the corner to make the repair job just after the crash.

Police said the extent of charges against Dody will not be determined until he is questioned. (Wichita Post Observer, October 16, 1953, page 10)
