LOPER, MATEL G.

TEACHER REMEMBERED FOR HER INDEPENDENCE MATEL LOPER, 90, ALSO SPENT 20 YEARS IN THE U.S. NAVY.

Matel Loper didn't let things stop her.

"She was almost completely self-sufficient," said Gary Howard, her nephew. "She lived alone and would have continued to live alone in her apartment on Kellogg had the city not have started the Kellogg expansion. She had the strength of character to go out and do so many things."

Miss Loper, 90, a retired U.S. Navy chief store keeper and former teacher, died Monday.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at College Hill United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mulvane Cemetery.

Miss Loper was born April 6, 1908, in Dayton, Ohio. When she was 7, her family moved from Ohio to Mulvane. An invalid aunt who lived with them had inherited a home there on Main Street.

She graduated from Mulvane High School in 1926, attended two semesters at Emporia State Teacher's College and then became a teacher.

At the Lone Star School southeast of Mulvane, Miss Loper not only taught but stoked the coal fire and swept the floor.

In 1945, she joined the Navy. Her career as a WAVE took her to many parts of the world. In Naples, Italy, she worked at the NATO building next door to where Mussolini had held his wartime rallies.

Before her "retirement" from the Navy in 1965, she audited payrolls, stocked grocery shelves, taught sailors to read and chartered ship movements in the Pacific.

"I recall when she was stationed overseas and would come into the train station in Wichita for the holidays," Gary Howard said. "I remember the fun she would bring to the holidays."

Once she retired from the Navy, Miss Loper enrolled in college in Honolulu to renew her teaching certificate. She then came home to Kansas to teach a few more years before retiring - this time to do volunteer work.

"She was very active in her church, the College Hill United Methodist Church," Gary Howard said. "She served as the church librarian."

Besides her nephew of Wichita, Miss Loper is survived by a sister, Ina Howard of Wichita; four more nephews; and 10 nieces.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Mulvane Historical Museum.

Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

MICHAEL L. MCKEE LOVED TO HELP

Michael L. McKee was known throughout Mulvane as a high school football star, owner of a plumbing business, a member of civic groups and a coach of youngsters' football and soccer teams.

''He never met a stranger, always had a smile on his face," his brother Merle said. "If he didn't know you when you met, he would in the next five minutes."

Mr. McKee, 33, died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning Saturday at his company, Mike's Plumbing and Heating. His brother said Mr. McKee was working in his shop with his car's engine running Saturday when he apparently became sleepy, sat down in the car and was overcome by the engine's fumes.

''He stood 6-3, was 240 pounds. He loved to help anybody he could in the community, especially the kids' groups, through the Optimists' Junior Football and soccer," his brother said. "He enjoyed kids."

Mr. McKee was born June 11, 1951, in Wichita to Dick and Marcella McKee. He was raised in Mulvane.

Mr. McKee was named to the all-league football team every year that he attended Mulvane High School and was named to the all-state team in his senior year.

He graduated in 1969 and attended Emporia State University for a year and a half on a football scholarship.

But he left to take a job at U.S. Supply, a plumbing supply firm in Wichita.

He married Elnora Stunkel on July 8, 1972.

He apprenticed with Simonsen Plumbing in Derby for two years and then started working for his father as a plumber. Two years ago, he bought out his father's business.

Mr. McKee was a member of the Mulvane Optimists Club, Mulvane Masonic Lodge, Wichita Consistory, Midian Shrine, and Council Hill Christian Church.

He also served as a volunteer firefighter for several years.

When not working, Mr. McKee spent many hours hunting and fishing.
