Taken from the Washington paper - of April 8, 1993 - Obituaries are often cold, minimum sorts of pieces that leave no hint of the personality of the deceased. After reading Ivan Thompson's death notice in the Cappistol this morning though, I'm going to break by embargo as written by Tom Buchannan. To say that Ivan was only a farmer and carpenter would be somewhat like saying I was only a printer. Ivan's mind was always busy, dreaming dreams and learning and quietly making a little money along the way. I'd guess he could have driven a Lincoln Town car had he so chosen, but he prided himself in living somewhat minimally.
Given a different set of circumstances, Ivan could well have been a Thomas Edison. Time and a poor memory have erased from my recall most of the ideas Ivan had.
At one time he invented a pipe, designed to trap the moisture that drives pipe smokers up the wall. Unfortunately Ivan lacked the modern knowledge it too to mount a successful marketing campaign. And Ivan could take and old pump organ that had degenerated into a pile of dusty boards and make it play again. Just as sweet as the days before it began the bumpy trip of a thousand miles or more in a covered wagon across the hills and rivers to Kansas. (Submitted by Beulah Green)

When a good man passes from earth it is fitting
and right that some mention should be made of his life and character that not only those who knew him, but also
those who come after, may keep him in remembrance and profit by his example. Anthony S. VAUGHT was born in All
Saints Parrish, South Carolina, Dec. 15, 1827, and departed this life, July 4th, 1897. His grandfather landed in
South Carolina when but ten days old, being born on the voyage from Germany. He fought in the Revolutionary war,
under Francis Marion. His father, whose name was Peter, was
one of a family of ten children, whose desecendants, except the subject sketch, still live in South Carolina.
Bro. Vaught came to Kansas in 1856, locating at
Marysville. He was married to Annie S. DRISKELL Dec. 10th, 1862. To them eight children were born, six of whom
with the wife are living and were all present at the funeral. Four sons and two daughters, whose names and residences
are as follows: P.W. Vaught, Shosey, Kans.; H.M. Vaught, Norgolk, Neb.; Anthony G. Vaught, John M. Vaught, Emma
C. Day, Mary D. Vaught, all of Hollenberg, Kansas. He spent his last day on earth with a few friends and neighbors
in his own home, near Hollenberg. Those present say he was happy and cheerful all day, retiring that night in his
usual health, but was found unconscious, and remained so until his spirit took its flight near 7 o'clock a.m.,
passing away without a murmer or a struggle. Bro. Vaught was coverted in 1880, joining the M.E. church, of which
his father
manifested a Christian spirit; never failing to observe family worship and attending church when he could. He was
a good, honest, upright Christian man, a devoted husband, and affectionate father. He now rests from his labors
and his works follow him. May we, with his wife and children, press on to meet him where partings never come. His
funeral services were held in the M.E. church at Hollenberg, and his burial in the cemetery near by. Written by
his Pastor, C. Atherton. (The Washington Republican, July 30, 1897, Friday, submitted by unknown G.T. donor)

Bossier city, La (AP)-an Indiana-based company expert said he planned a detailed inspection today of equipment
at the water tower where two workers plunged 124 feet to their deaths and a foreman was injured.
The two dead workers were identified late Thursday as Steven Ouellette, 21 of Washington, Kan., and Kelly Davidson, 24, of nearby Doyline, La. Foreman Michael Surratt, 34, of Princeton, La., was treated for injuries and released from Bossier General Hospital.
C.W. Burns, field superintendent for Universal Tank & Iron co. of Indianapolis, Ind., said he would try to learn today why a cable, holding a heavy steel plate, snapped as Ouellette and Davidson were installing the base of a water tank atop the tower. Burns said he would not speculate until his investigation was completed.
Authorities said the workers were standing on a big, wedge-shaped piece of steel that had been installed earlier as part of the tank’s bottom. That piece was struck by the other when the cable snapped, they said.
The accident happened about 9:30 a.m.
“The cable snapped and dropped the steel plate that they had lifted to the top,” said City Engineer Ronald Carlson. “It hit two or three other pieces of steel and knocked them down with the workers…they fell 124 feet and landed with the plates.”
Co-workers said Davidson had planned to leave work at noon so he and his wife could be there when their 1 ½ week old daughter had surgery. Carlson said Ouellette was to have been married on Jan. 17.
The city official said the two men were pinned beneath several wedge shaped sheets of steel, measuring 10 by 15 feet and each weighing a ton or more.
Carlson said Surratt was standing on the ground when a rope attached to the steel plate wrapped around his foot, yanked him about 30 feet into the air and then dropped him when the cable broke.
A nursing supervisor said Surratt’s most severe injury was a broken thumb.
The tank designed to hold 2 million gallons of water, was being built near the Northwest Louisiana State School for the retarded, said Ann Mattis, Carlson’s secretary. (Washington County News, July 1981, submitted by Maurene Miller)
