The first Boone County Courthouse was built in 1800 (presumed to be of logs), the second one in 1817, and the third, or present building, was completed in 1889.

Regarding the SECOND COURTHOUSE -- The Boone County Court on 5 February, 1816, “agreed to build a Commodious Court house at this place, to be brick & to be commenced this Season.”  4 March 1818, the court agreed “the court house to be built at this place shall be …forty feet in length and thirty-six feet in width of a suitable thickness and of proportional height”.  6 January 1817, “The commissioners for building the courthouse…proposed the following additions to the former proposed plans which is for the stone wall to be raised one foot higher two chimneys with two fireplaces in each. The house to be well oiled, painted & penciled with white lead & to have a stone sill for the door, which proposition the court doth agree to”.  1 September 1817, the courthouse commissioners suggested the following addition to the courthouse, ”to erect an addition of 12 feet in front to be open two story high spaced upon pillars 5 in number & that Geo. Throop the undertaker now is agreed to wait until the collection of the next levy for his pay”.  6 October 1817, “the courthouse commissioners be & are authorized to cause an addition of a cupola & steeple such as they may think proper to other courthouses & may open a subscription for that purpose & receive such donations as may be given”.  However, it was not until 6 October 1828 that “It is now agreed & ordered by the court that a cupola be erected”... “and have placed in said cupola such a bell as they may think advisable:.  5 October 1829, “It is ordered that Willis Graves who has heretofore been appointed a Comr. to have a cupola erected on the courthouse. Also have a Franklin or lightning rod made and put up on the courthouse”.  The cupola was erected by W. Calvert.  45 July 1831, it was reported that Robt. Wake had put a new roof on the courthouse & “the comrs. will therefore pay said Wake on order agreeable to contract”.  1 July 1833, “Johnson Bradly is appointed as Comr. to return the courthouse bell which is cracked & have exchanged or moulded over as he may think best & hang again”.  (See Order books A, B, C, and D.)

3 March 1823, the Comrs. To have the courthouse & Clerk’s office enclosed with a plank fence 4 feet high capd. with plank, black locust post & with 4 gates to run with Washington Street 10 feet east of the Clerk’s office” etc.  Evidently the photograph of the building was taken between 1817 and 1828 or before the cupola was added to the building.
