Clay County was formed from Madison County and Floyd County.
Created in 1806 and
est. in 1807.
Named after Gen. Green Clay (1757-1826); a military leader in the War of 1812.
He was also representative of Kentucky County in the Virginia General Assembly.

County seat is Manchester.
