Thomas Jefferson Elmore
Was born May 27, 1837 in Holmes County, Mississippi. He is a son of William and Mary Reynolds Elmore. The father was a native of South Carolina, he died in 1872. The mother was born in Alabama. Our subjest was reared in Mississippi. In 1862 he raised Company G, Fourth Mississippi Infantry, was chosen captain of the company and served to the end of the war. Capt. Elmore participated in the battles of Fort Donelson, siege of Vicksburg, siege of Donelson, Siege of Blakeley and was with Hood in his campaign throught Tennessee. He was also at Atlanta and the battle of New Hope Church, at the latter he was captured, but escaped and continued in active duty until the end of the war. He then returned to Mississippi and engaged in farming. In 1869 he came to Mayfield and continued in agricultural pursuits until 1879, when he formed the partnership of Watts & Elmore in the grocery business. This partnership continued until February, 1884, when the firm of Hale & Elmore was formed which has since continued. They carry a large and well selected stock of dry goods and by their just dealings and courteous treatment their business has rapidly increased. Mr. Elmore was elected to the State legislature in 1881 and served with distinction two years. He was married in 1865 to Miss Sarah Ophelia Weems of Holmes County, Mississippi. They had six children,two sons and four daughters. Mr. Elmore is a member of the Masonic fraternity. Mr. Elmore died October 11, 1919 in Graves County, Kentucky
