Greenup County was formed from Mason County on December 12, 1803. It was came from Mason County which covered the majority of eastern Kentucky at the time. It was named in the honor of Christopher Greenup (1750-1818), Kentucky's first Congressman, third Governor of Kentucky and clerk of the Kentucky Senate. County Seat is Greenup.
