He was born April 10, 1922 in Lawrence County, Kentucky to Landon and Jettie Adams, deceased. He was preceded in death by first wife Kathleen Short Adams, son Dale Eugene Adams, daughter Roberta Kay Sword, step-daughter Diane Leist, siblings Lorene, Sarah, Robert and Paul Adams, as well as sister Effie Adams Neff. He is survived by his spouse, Donna Kysor Adams, Circleville; son, Kay (Judi) Adams, Jr., Galloway; daughters, Connie (Walter) Walsh, Hilliard, Donna (Steve) Holbrook, Ashville; step-sons, Tim (Cecilia) Leist, Reynoldsburg and David Leist, Waynseville. He is also survived by grandchildren, David (Emily) Adams, Columbus, Susan Walsh, Hilliard, Rachel Walsh, New York, Tracy (Tom) Buday, Dublin, Howie (Ellen) Holbrook, Lancaster; step-grandchildren, Heath (Robyn) Leist, Circleville, Stephanie (Tom) Hill, Hebron, KY.; great-grandchildren surviving are Avery Adams, Collin Holbrook; step-great-grandchildren, Alexander Leist, Allison and Ryan Hill. Siblings surviving are sister, Rose Bacus, Circleville; and brother, Bill (Pat) Adams, Washington Court House; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kay proudly served his country during WWII in the 46th Signal Corp, European and Pacific Theatres. He retired from Rockwell International, where he was a loyal and dedicated employee for 32 years. He was very proud of the fact that he assisted in building the space shuttles. He farmed many years in the Pickaway and Ross County areas. He enjoyed eating breakfast at Bob Evans, Circleville almost every morning. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and going to Bluegrass Gospel Concerts. Viewing hours will be Sunday, September 10, 2-6 p.m. at WELLMAN FUNERAL HOME, 1455 N. Court St., Circleville, Ohio. Funeral will be performed at 11 a.m. by Rev. David Titler, Monday, September 11. Viewing will also be one hour before the service. Small graveside service to follow after the funeral at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Kingston, Ohio.

1929-2009  Bennie Atkinson, 79, of Louisa passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009 at his place of residence on Lackey Ave. Mr. Atkinson, was born in Tram, Ky. the son of Leport Atkinson and Rickman Fraylen, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Tracey Atkinson.  Married to Anna Jean Jones Atkinson, who survives,  for 57 years, he worked for the C&O Railway for 45 years before he retired to pursue his lifetime love of fishing. Mr. Atkinson was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church of Louisa.  In addition to his wife, Mr. Atkinson is survived by one daughter, Terry Hudnall, of louisa, three brothers, two grandchildren, Heath Hudnall and Heather Burgess, and two great grandchildren, Alexandria and Ethen.  Visitation will be 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Tuesday at Young Funeral Home. The family will gather at 4:00 P.M. Funeral services will be  held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 1st United Methodist Church with Rev. Art Honican officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa under the direction of Young funeral Home.

Ethel Mae Young Bays - 1920-2009

Ethel Mae Young Bays, 88, of Chesapeake , Va. , died at her home on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Bays was born April 19, 1920, in Houckville, a daughter of the late Morton Harrison and Chloe Grimm Young and was the last surviving of their 11 children.
She was born again in Christ on Aug. 18, 1944, and was a member of Dry Ridge Free Will Baptist Church. She was predeceased (1997) by her husband, Edgar Bruce Bays .
She is survived by her four daughters, Vivian (Bernard) Swann of Westminster, Md., Velsie (Robert) Hewlett of Louisa, Virginia (Royce Jr.) Daw of Chesapeake , Va. , and Velda Frances (Charles) Daniel of Paintsville. She also is survived by seven grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren, as well as numerous other family members.
In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Mrs. Bays was a homemaker, farmer, Sunday school teacher and missionary to Nevada . It is with great sorrow her family bids her goodbye, but they are confident of being reunited with her in heaven.

Lexington Herald-Leader (KY) - September 6, 1992 LOWMANSVILLE -- A man died yesterday when the car he was driving hit a guardrail and an embankment on U.S. 23 at Lowmansville, Kentucky State Police said. Kelly Ray Blair, 22, of Lowmansville, was thrown from the car he was driving about 12:20 a.m. Johnson County Coroner J.R. Frisby pronounced Mr. Blair dead at the scene. Police said Mr. Blair was driving north on U.S. 23 when he lost control of the car. It hit a guardrail, crossed the oncoming lane of traffic and hit an embankment. He was not wearing a seat belt, a police report said. Mr. Blair was the husband of Heather Blair. Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Visitation is today after 9 a.m.

May 3, 2009  Vernon Leslie Blankenship (1926-2009)
Vernon Leslie Blankenship, 82, of Louisa, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland .
He was born Dec. 1, 1926, in Ashland , the son of the late Lindsey and Carrie Sparks Blankenship. He was the husband of the late Clotine Hay Blankenship.
He was a service technician at NASA and Boeing Aircraft and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served during World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Deanna Lester of Louisa; two sisters, Gayle Stamper and Carolyn Vogel, both of Delaware, Ohio; a granddaughter, Georgieana Grayson; and two great-granddaughters, Alexandria Grayson and Anna-Wray Grayson.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Young Funeral Home in Louisa by the Rev. Emmitt Barker. Burial will be in Elliott County Memorial Gardens in Sandy Hook .
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marie Nelson Bradley, 86, of Meades Branch in Louisa, went to be with her Lord on Saturday May 2, 2009.  Marie was born Nov. 26, 1922, at Meades Branch, the daughter of the late Charles and Lula Hickman Nelson.  Marie was a longtime restaurant owner and known to her many customers and friends as the “Kentucky Lady.” She enjoyed being like their mom away from home.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Warren Bradley, who died in 1957; a son, Jimmy Bradley; a sister, Dorothy Stevens; four brothers, Clyde Nelson, Delbert Nelson, Pete Nelson and Eugene Nelson; and two special nephews, Billy Gene Kise and Charles Hubert Nelson.
She is survived by her loving children: a daughter, Carole Sue Fugitt of Meades Branch; a son, Eddie Bill Bradley of Meades Branch; a brother, John Nelson of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Emily (Lee) Butler, Bill (Margie) Bradley, Dean (Susie) Bradley, Missy Bradley, Glenn Fugitt, Greg (Kelli) Fugitt, Shana (Eric) Meek and Jamie (Jeremy) Pack; 15 great-grandchildren, Andrea Butler, Jessica Miller, Kayla Bradley, Kim Bradley, Jon Bradley, Joziah, Jalison, Brianna, J.C. Billy Joe was born November 4, 1929, in Lawrence County, Kentucky, the son of the late William Henderson and Goldie Hall Branham. He was a retired electrician and member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 317 a member of the Oak Grove Church at Fort Gay, W.Va., and served during the Korean Conflict in the United States Marine Corps. Elmer E. Burchwell, 87, of Blaine , died Wednesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center .
He was born May 17, 1921, in Lawrence County .  His wife, Joy E. Kelley Burchwell, survives.  The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will be in Skaggstown Cemetery at Flat gap.

Evening Times August 18, 1906  Mrs. Mary Burton, while her husband was in Columbus , took a dose of carbolic acid and her body was found in the morning.  She had hung a white card on the door and left a long letter, the contents of which had not been given out.  Mrs. Burton was married three weeks ago and had come here from near Louisa , Ky.   She was homesick and had no money.  Her father is W. H. Calhoun of Wilbur , Ky.

Cincinnati Enquirer, The (OH) - March 18, 2003 BUTLER James R., February 8, 1946 to March 16, 2003, Cincinnati, OH, recently retired from Ashland Inc. passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Northern Kentucky after a brief illness. A native of Lawrence County, Kentucky, Butler was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and was elected to Eastern's Hall of Distinguished Alumni. He also served as Captain in the US Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Butler's career with Ashland began in 1970 as a salesman in Buffalo, NY. He later transferred to a sales assignment in St. Louis, MO, after which he joined the company's Public Affairs group in Ashland, KY in 1980. He served in positions of increasing responsibility before becoming Manager of Media Relations and company spokesman in 1984. In 1986, he joined Ashland's government relations group as a regional manager of State Government Relations in Bloomington, MN then later served as Associate Director of State Government Relations before being named to his retiring position, Director, State and Local Government Relations in 1994. Active in civic and trade organizations, Butler had served as Chairman of the General Committee on State Relations of the American Petroleum Institute as well as being Chairman of the Kentucky Chemical Council. He was on the Executive Committee of the Lawrence County Ohio Development Corporation, was Treasurer of the Covington, KY Business Council and served as a board member of Associated Industries of Kentucky and the Kentucky Retail Federation. He had recently been named to the Northern KY Symphony Board. Butler is survived by his wife, Mary, Cincinnati, OH and daughter, Lexie (Jeff) Centers and grandson, Jaron Centers of Hazard, KY. 

Columbus Dispatch, The (OH) - July 30, 2006 CANTRELL James Cantrell, age 70, of Plain City, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at home surrounded by his loving family after an extended and courageous battle with cancer. A gentle and kind man who always had a helping hand or generous supply of home grown garden vegetables for whoever was in need. Born October 19, 1935 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. He retired from the City of Upper Arlington in 1991 after 36 years of service. He also worked for the Franklin County Fairgrounds as the ground supervisor. Preceded in death by parents Hubert and Nancy (Berry) Cantrell, grandson Joseph Keith McCabe, brothers Orville "Little Red" Cantrell and Marvin Cantrell, sisters Ruth Skaggs, Shirley Beach, Audra Mae "Dolly" Sparks. She was surrounded by her loving family in the home of Joseph & Vicky Jeter. Gypsy was born September 25, 1911 in Lawrence County, Kentucky the daughter of Charles Borders and Della (Hannah) Johnson. Gypsy was an elementary school teacher in Champaign County. She taught at Cable, Graham and retired from Mechanicsburg Elementary Schools. She was a member of Trinity Chapel Church in Milford Center. She is survived by her sister, Anna Jeter of Woodstock; her brothers, H.K. Johnson of Minerva, Ohio and Bill (Lou) Johnson of Marrietta, Ohio, sisters-in-law, Irene Johnson of Minerva, Ohio and Goldie Johnson of Kentucky; as well as several nieces & nephews. A special thank you to Sherry Lynn Wood and Teresa Gardner. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ervin Chandler, four brothers, John, Otis, Otto, and Junior Johnson and one sister-in-law, Yvonne Johnson. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, August 7, 2006 from 5-8 pm in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg. 1917-2009  Harry William Dent, 92, of Perry Street in Louisa, died Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center in Louisa. Born in Elgood , W.Va. the son of Dexter Hamilton and Laura Burk Thompson Dent, he was a heavy equipment operator during his working days. He was a member of the Vinson Lodge F&AM.  Mr. Dent was preceded in death by his wife Polly Ann Comer Dent who passed away in 1994. DIED FIGHTING FIRE  April 20, 1909 – William Dobbins, of Lawrence County , Kentucky , while fighting a forest fire which menaced his home last night, was burned to death.  Many other homes have been threatened by the forest fires, which have been raging several days in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky , and thousands of dollars of timber have been destroyed.  Heavy rains last night quenched the fires.

1940-2009  Bertalene “Betty” Edwards, 68, of Blaine, Ky. passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at her home. She was born July 2, 1940 in Sandy Hook , Ky. a daughter of the late Jim and Hazel Skaggs Blankenbeckler. She was a retired cook at Blaine Elementary School and member of the Caines Creek Freewill Baptist Church . In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Gary Edwards, two sisters, Yvonne Reinholtz and Dorene Blankenbeckler, two brothers, Willie Blankenbeckler and Olen Blankenbeckler, also two Grandchildren, Isiah Edwards and Matthew Edwards.  Survivors include, three daughters, Sandy Edwards of Blaine, Ky.; Patty Edwards of Blaine, Ky.; and Mary Bloomfield of Louisa, Ky.; two sons, Emory (Beth) Edwards of Ulyssess, Ky.; Gary (Dorothy) Edwards of Blaine, Ky.; two sisters, Ottie Mae Skaggs of Clawson, MI.; and Flora Walker of Olive Hill, Ky.; one brother, Bert Blankenbeckler of Olive Hill, Ky.; six Grandchildren, Jonathan Boggs, Nathan (Shana) Boggs, Patrick Boggs, Andrew Edwards, Ethan Edwards and Edmond Edwards.  Funeral services will be conducted 1 :00 pm Friday, May 1, 2009 at Caines Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Ford McKenzie and Bondi Salyers officiating. Monday, May 11, 2009  Mildred Elam befriended generations of Ashland residents during her 40 years of memorable service as bookstore manager and central fund treasurer of Ashland High School and the renamed Paul G. Blazer High School . From 1956 through 1996, literally thousands of students came to know and depend on Millie Elam in the bookstore. Yet this position was only a part of a long and varied work career.
Prior to joining the staff of the high school, Ms. Elam worked as an office manager for Dr. M.D. Garred for five years, as an office manager for Attorney Chesley Lycan for five years and as a teller at Third National Bank for three years. From 1938 to 1944, she was the featured vocalist for a local dance band called “Scott Craft and his Craftsmen,” featuring Mimi Hayes. An article about her singing career appeared in the winter 2008 edition of “Independent — The Magazine.”
In 2008, she was presented a key to the city of Ashland in recognition of her many accomplishments. Ms. Elam was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 119, and the Russell Mistletoe Chapter; the White Shrine; The Ashland Child Culture Club; the Mother of Twins Club; and a former officer of the Ashland Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Born in Louisa , Ky. , Mildred Elizabeth Hayes Elam was the daughter of the late William Kirk Hayes and the late Martha Evelyn Thompson Hayes; and sister of the late Mary Maxine Burns.
Mildred Elam is survived by her twin daughters, Patricia Elam of Ashland and Pamela Elam of New York City , who were with her when she passed away at home on May 9th after a long illness.
Funeral services will be at the Marshall Steen Funeral Home, 3409 13th Street , Ashland , on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Times Recorder  October 11, 1970  Bennett Fannin, 51, died Saturday, October 10, at his home of an apparent heart attack.  Born May 27, 1919, at Yatesville , Ky. , he was a don of Mrs. Cora Derrefield Fannin and the late Lewis Fannin.  Mr. Fannin was a veteran of World War II.  Surviving are his widow, the former Exie B. Gloria Jean Chapman Gussler, age 57, of Westwood , Ky. , formerly of Coal Grove , Ohio , died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 24, 1952, in Lawrence County , Ohio , a daughter of the late Ray Chapman and Sadarae Collins Chapman.
She was a medical transcriptionist, a member of International Golden Kay Honor Society, a graduate of Dawson Bryant High School in 1970, attended Ohio University Southern where she was on the dean’s list and a member of Ashland Theater Guild.
Surviving are her soulmate, Gene Gussler of Westwood; one sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Larry Boggs of Coal Grove, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Crystal Angela (Jamie) Reihs of Ashland, Ky.; stepgrandchildren, Tanner, Austin and Madison; nephews, Christopher Boggs, David and Dawnya Boggs, and Julie and David Rutherford; and great-nephews, Zachary, Zane and Zayden.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton , Ohio , by Pastor Norm Staker.

1934-2009  Richard S. Gussler, 74, of Louisa went to be with the Lord on Monday April 20, at his home.  Richard was born May 16,1934 at Adams , Ky the son of the late F.R. (Freet) and Ugie Wellman Gussler.  He was a farmer and a member of the Oak Grove Church . In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Donald Ray Gussler.  Survivors include his loving wife Alma Farris Gussler, two daughters, Linda Glidewell of Lawrenceville , Ga , and Darlene and husband Rick Staniford of Louisa. A son Richard Gussler Jr of Louisa, a sister Mary Ethel Salyer of Fallsburg. Two brothers Don Gussler of Martha and Ray Gussler of Columbus Oh.  Richard had ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.Funeral services will be conducted by Rev.  Mack Ray Cyrus and Brother Casey Cyrus on Thursday April 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home.
