Portsmouth Daily Times 3-29-1917

One of the saddest events that ever took place at Sunshine was when the Grim Peaper entered the house of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Phillips, taking from them their youngest child, Harry Phillips, who was born January 11, 1916, and died Thursday, March 15, 1917, age 14 months and 4 days, and Doria Lucile Phillips, who was born December 12, 1913, and died Sunday, March 18, 1917, age 3 years, 3 months, and 6 days.  Death was due to measles and whooping-cough, afterwards developing into complications of disease, which proved fatal to the little ones.  In addition to the parents, Mr. Grover Phillips and Mrs. Pearl Phillips, they are survived by one brother, Henry Phillips, aged 6 years.  While it was known that both children were seriously ill, yet the news of their passing away came as a shock to the legion of friends.  The parents are much bereaved over the death of their two youngest children and the people of the community are extending a helping hand and their sympathy.  Mr. Phillips is employed by the Tygart Fire Brick company of Tygart, Ky.  Mrs. Many J. Phillips, grandmother of little Harry and Doris, died March 13, 1917, at the home of a son, Johnnie Phillips.  Mrs. Phillips was born May 3rd, 1854(?), aged (??) years and 10 months.  She is survived by the following children:  Samantha and Monroe, of Blaine, Ky., and Grover, Johnnie, Cynthia and ?uia, of Sunshine, Ky.  Mrs. Phillips was buried at her old home place near Blaine, Kentucky.

October  2, 1884 Cambridge City Tribune (Cambridge City, Indiana)
Francis M. Stobaugh was born in Louisa, Lawrence County, Kentucky, October 7, 1840, and died of jaundice, at his home in East Cambridge, Sept. 27, 1884, being 43 years, 11 months, and 20 days of age.  His parents moved to Milton, in this county, when he was about five years old, and continued to live there until he married, when he became a resident of this place.  He was among the first to enlist in 1861.  He was mustered in as a member of Co. A, 8th Indiana Volunteers for 3 months, on April 18, 1861.  Was in the battle of Rich Mountain, West Va., June 11, and was severely wounded in the thigh by a canister shot.  In July, 1862, he assisted State L. Gregg, in recruiting the 10th Indiana Battery, which encamped on Capitol Hill, this city.  Was commissioned as Junior 2nd Lieutenant, and with the Battery mustered into the service for 3 years, on August 20, 1862.  He was with the Battery at the battle of Perryville, Oct. 8th, and all their hard marches up to Feb. 1863.  He, with 20 men and four wagons of the Battery, accompanied a Brigade foraging detail of 250 Infantry and wagons, sent out from Murfreesborough.  The entire party were captured by John Morgan, who paroled the enlisted men but held the officers.  On March 20th, the Brigade of 1400 men and 2 guns of the Battery, overtook Morgan’s forces, 4000 strong, and badly whipped them, capturing his entire force.  For language used by the Union boys while making out the parole papers for the rebels, Morgan retaliated by placing Lieutenant Stobaugh, who was then a prisoner at Chattanooga, in irons, and reducing his rations to bread and water.  The following May he was exchanged and reported at his post June 1.  He took part in the Chickamauga campaign, Chattanooga siege, Lookout Mountain, and Mission Ridge contests.  During this campaign he contracted the piles and other complicated troubles, and became so broken down in health that he was compelled to resign, and was honorably mustered out on March 1?, 1864.

            He was a member of Cambridge Lodge F. A. Masons and also of the Grand Army Post, both orders participating in his burial.  He leaves a wife, daughter, and three sons to mourn his departure, and the following lines but feebly express the sad feelings of the stricken family at their great loss:

            “Of all that life could treasure most,

            Our hearts are now bereft;

            Death’s muffled tread has paused before

To bear the loved one from our door.”

Services were conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev’s Parr and Bailey.  He was laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery with the impressive services of the Masonic ritual.  May he sleep in peace.
