MARRIAGES IN 1854

Submitted by: Jo An Scott - 2008

There were two books of recorded marriages started in 1854. One book is a record for the whites; the other for the colored. In most of the earlier books of marriage, the record is only for the license. The marriage certificate had to be filed in the clerk's office. On many of these certificates are found government stamps, some have no stamps and some have been cut off by some vandal years ago. Sometimes the stamp is on the license but in most cases it is affixed to the certificate. Among the first marriage certificates were found the following:

James A. Bruce to Sarah Barnett.
James T. Townsend to Mary J. Jenkins.
Jonas Martin to Fraurannah Stone.
G. W. Murphy to Mary E. Hill.
Steven Be Tisdell to Rachel Glenn.
James Toll to Sarah Anne Eades.
James Rop to Anna Brown.
William Faughn to Emma Cotton.
Chas. A. Bell to Nancy E. Barrett.
John Sells to Susan Vied.

Wm. M. Allen to Milijean Williams.
Robt. R. Norris to Martha A. Stone.
Lennil A. Stone to Mary S. Coan.
Reuben F. Frizell to Martha Cockran.
H. M. Vivian to M. M. Hayes.
John McGregor to Sarah Jones.
John F. Dyer to Milijean Nichols.
John Farmer to Julianna Racker.
David H. Winkler to Mary Anne O'Brien.
Leander P. Johnson to Jeanette Johnson.
Dowin Rogers to E. E. Herring.
Columbus Watson to E. A. Duncan.
