Submitted by Jo Ann Scott
The county government of Lyon County consists of a county sheriff, judge, court clerk, attorney, tax commissioner, circuit court clerk, jailer, coroner, and three magistrates, one from each magisterial district. The following is a listing of the county officials, their office, their terms, and their respective duties. All officers are elected for a term of four years with the exception of the circuit court clerk (a state office) which is for a term of six years.
SHERIFF
Duties
The sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the county and is charged with responsibility for all criminal and civil law in the county.
The duties of the elected sheriff of the county are: to take charge of prisoners, to oversee juries, and to prevent breaches of the peace. He carries out the judgment of the county court and also performs the collection of county taxes after they have been assessed and properly allocated respectively by the county tax commissioner and county court clerk.
The Lyon County sheriff is allowed $1,500.00 a year for road patrol, four per cent of all taxes collected with the exception of the first $10,000.00 of which he receives ten per cent, and a $4.00 arrest fee for each person arrested by him. In addition he receives $5.00 every time he attends court and $2.00 for each summons plus mileage. No sheriff can succeed himself.
